11:41 DeNA bought the BayStars from Tokyo Broadcasting System, not Maruha. Maruha sold the team to TBS in January 2002 while requiring them not to change the name, which is why it goes unnoticed.
MY CENTRAL LEAGUE TEAM!! Also their stadium was the host of the 2021 Olympics baseball events where Tyler Austin, a current Baystar, won silver for Team USA. Both where the reasons I became hooked to the NPB every since. Also, DB Starman is my primary NPB mascot. VAMOS HASTA LA VICTORIA #Baystars (Plays Passionate Star)
2024 Japan Series needs its own video. Like how a dynastic team like Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks choked the whole series on a black sheep named Yokohama DeNA Baystars that barely hung into .500 and beat the Yomiuri Giants a series prior? And had 2-0 going to Fukuoka? Also, "Bays-ball". NPB's Meme Team
Osamu Mihara is the person most respected by Akira Ohgi, who develop Ichiro, and Hideki Kuyriyama , who develop Shohei Ohtani. Foreigners may not know him, but he's an important figure in Japanese baseball. If you can read Japanese, I recommend reading the book 魔術師 三原脩と西鉄ライオンズ(English title Magician Osamu Mihara and Nishitetsu Lions). You will understand not only Osamu Mihara also the history of baseball in Japan.
I hope Gaijin Baseball will cover the infamous Kawasaki Stadium (not to be confused with Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium) as it's still around surprisingly enough... as an American football stadium.
Shame that the name Whales got such an unfortunate association, because it is a great name for a baseball team especially for one based out of Yokohama. Regardless, the BayStars truly are the odd team of the bunch in Central League that almost seems like it doesn't fit due to how young they are as a team in comparison with the rest of the historical titans in their league like the Tigers and Giants. I guess it means they have more time to build their own dynasty similar to the Hawks, if you want to look at it glass half full. Another cool video as always Gaijin. Can't wait to watch Invincible Seibu next. :)
more precisely, japanese people didn't really dislike the name because whaling had been part of their fishing culture since forever. But they were aware that the world was getting increasingly outraged by the practice, so in their typical fashion, they tried to keep it low profile by changing the name.
I played in Yokohama in 2002 and we were terrible. The pitching was hurting and so were the Gaigin brought in. I was the only one to stay in the big club all year, Also first Latino player to hit for the cycle. The Fans and the city are out of this world. Great fans and great city. Also the office was great. Great memories. Saito, Takahuru Ishi, Suzuki and Saeki were a big part of that team. Unfortunately Saeki (calve) and Susuki (back) were down all year with injuries. Great memories.
@@GaijinBaseball he was Billy's go-to guy to take over whenever he got thrown out of games. Billy would then go to a local bar, ask to borrow the phone, call the dugout and manage with Clete over a beer watching the game on tv! (Billy's actual accounts of his time in Oakland.)
Worth having that series on its own video. The results were also shocking and I just learned it cos one Reddit I read online congratulate Fukuoka for choking against Yokohama
The Baystars have my favourite unis in NPB, especially after the Carp announced their new look. But NPB on the whole is weaker than most leagues for their uniforms.
i can't find any Phillies connection, yet Phillies have been around for 100 years and it seems like maybe there could be one, even if it's the Phanatic palling around in Japan.
It's the Kintetsu Pearls They used the Phillies P under that name, they became the Buffaloes in 1959 I probably should've labelled that looking back on it now
@@GaijinBaseball Thank you! Interesting I thought that P font was a Phillies creation. Great site! It was a sign that Charlie Manuel would win a WS with Philly.
how ugly their home uniform is, unironically it's one of my favorite uniform in NPB.. Quoting Shannon Skane, The Hockey Guy, It's falls into "It's so ugly, it's great" category.
I must say it's a bit ironic that you name your team Whales because your company's main business is killing whales. It's like calling a bunch of fishermen "the team fish".. Not saying anything about whaling being now banned, which is neither here nor there..

Thanks for the info. After the sale to DeNA, TBS still airs Baystars games till the present.
@@jmramos0109 Did they air the Japan Series games this year?

Yes! Love this series, and finally my team is here!
Ham Fighters is kinda fun though, so I don’t always correct people when they say it.
I hope Gaijin Baseball will cover the infamous Kawasaki Stadium (not to be confused with Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium) as it's still around surprisingly enough... as an American football stadium.
Never thought Pat Mahomes touch NPB before this video. Would be interesting 'what if' he ended up staying in Japan knowing what Mahomes (II) did now
Maybe a hard throwing closer for the Giants
I'd wonder whether we'll have Mario-themed uniform games in future, given that Nintendo currently has a strategic partnership with DeNA. 🤣
Well they did pokémon

I don’t hate their uniforms. The Fighters new uniforms are far worse imo.

Clete Boyer, future assistant to Billy Martin during his Oakland years.
He got that because he was actually a pretty solid coach on the Whales despite the language barrier

2024 JAPAN SERIES CHAMPIONS!
I love how the end of the video predicted this too - Only missing the veteran Miyazaki but the staff really pulled through and silenced the hawks

Ah yes DeNa, they had a GI Joe game I used to play. Madness...

Their "star night" and "X F. Marinos" jerseys are immeasurably better it's insane how ugly they managed to make the team logo

He played around that time and he became my coach later in my professional career
So cool to hear this story. Thanks for sharing
