  • Some remarkable amateur 16mm film of the life and times of Johannesburg during the war years of 1939-45. The film is entitled "The Golden City of "Johannesburg", and the full footage ran to 40mins (I think possibly recorded at less than 18fps).
It shows recruitment marches early in the War outside Brooklyn House, fund raising events, buildings and streets in the city centre, the Liberty Cavalcade event at Zoo Park in 1942, and some reactions to VE day and the capitulation of Germany at War's end. One cannot help feeling that this was a side of the war experience in Jo-berg informed by privilege...but it remains an historical account of that experience nevertheless.
The filmmaker was Louis Epstein. The original 16mm film has be digitised frame by frame at a resolution of 2048x1152. I am afraid I knocked my focus out a reel or so ago without noticing, so this could be a bit sharper than appears here I am sorry to say.
