    I love fishing, but over the last 3years there have been so many life-changing things going on that, I have not taken time out for " ME TIME." Well, this 74-year-old woman and her 68-year-old sister are going out on a charter boat for Ocean Fishing! The cost is $72.00 each. This may not sound frugal, but this will be mentally healthy.

    I used to do a lot of camping. I do camp during the winter many times in California. There are less crowds, it's nice to have a campfire and snuggling into a sleeping bag is so nice during cold weather. Hot weather is just sticky and smelly!

    In our early 20s, David and I camped across America with a tent, 2 sleeping bags and a small camp stove. After watching your program evaluating the Unigear camping equipment, I wished we had had that equipment. Our trip was fun but often uncomfortable. Thanks for sharing.

    16 years ago we invested in high quality square bottom sleeping bags (on sale for $99 CAD =$76 USD) that can withstand well below zero temperatures that are quiet. They are a bit bulky but they were worth every penny, especially in the Northern Rockies where it get cold fast. Nothing worse than a cold noisy sleeping bag. We also invested in a 4 man pop up tent which works well for 2 people and it folds up to be a saucer size. I don't like that it doesn't have 2 exits, which is important when in the bear backcountry. We now have good quality self inflating air mattresses after making the mistake of taking an air mattress that deflated the first night out. We are too old to sleep on hard ground. We've had our Coleman stove and lantern for ever. Even though we take our tent with us for day use, we like to sleep in our Prius V now after being washed out one night because our tarp underneath failed. That was just miserable.

      Sandra Bryan yes we have been washed out so many times that we bought a second hand rv. Now when it rains we do not fear getting soaked! We too are too old for ground sleeping!🏕 We cook on a camp stove or portable table top gas grill!

    Hope & Larry, between 1980 and '88 when we left California, my "wasband" and I often snow-camped in the Sierra Madre range. It was silent, pristine, and our equipment from R.E.I. and Western Mountaineering kept us comfortable. Our (Jansport) dome tent had a separate rain fly and we usually stayed at "primitive" campsites that, at most, might have a picnic table. I remember the sound of the Svea camp stove heating water for instant coffee in the morning, and the sight of Mule deer checking out our tent on their mountain when we stayed more than a couple of days. Good memories! btw I would NOT keep snacks in a tent if you are anywhere near bear country.

    • @larryware1
      @larryware1 2 года назад +1

      So fun, Sherry! What great memories you have! I loved primitive camping. We're going to do it again. I did a lot of solo camping/backpacking before Hope and I were married. Like you and your wasband, I camped high up in the Rockies and enjoyed the solitude, quiet, and the wildlife. I used a Whisperlite one-burner stove. I have many 35mm slides from those days. Now I want to share that experience with the two younger boys. Oh, and you are so right about snacks in bear country. I kept all the food sealed up and backpacked in altitudes high above the bears. When camped lower, I kept all the food in the car.

      We get multiple offers every day to do product reviews. We turn 99% of them down flat. Our viewers have been asking about frugal family fun and camping has been a HUGE blessing to Larry and me. It gave us the chance to travel when we had very little money to spend. We were impressed by Unigear's features and reasonable prices. We will occasionally continue to share product reviews, but know that when we choose to do them, it's for a product that we feel truly IS beneficial for our audience. I hope that explanation helps.

    My favorite camping gear is a Toyota Prius V. Took the seats out the rear. Added a trailer hitch and a cargo rack that holds a tool box. That box holds my centrifugal clothes spinner and a 10X10 easy up shade. If you can't find shade you can make your own. The car is a natural generator it can be set to reasonable temperature. Cold out I don't run the heat unless I'm avoiding literally freezing temperatures. I'm using my electric blanket, thermal underwear and insulated coveralls. I recently bought electric gloves and socks. Wool , need I say more?

    Do research sleeping bag ratings before buying to understand the comfort rating vs. lowest possible survival rating. EN or ISO lab tests can help. Women vs. men may not feel as warm in a bag. Also, the best $$$ bag won't do much with a lousy uninsulated pad in multiple seasons; look at R ratings. Don't leave snacks in the tent pocket (wildlife) or valuables (could be stolen with a knife cut or get condensation on the electronics). Not too impressed with this brand but hope to rediscover camping next spring after many years. Maybe will find some good used equipment after summer's over!!!
