The thing I like the most about you Merlin. (scratch that) There are many things that impress me about you but one of them is your passion for history. You always seem to take the time to educate us on everything you work on, not just mechanically but historically. Full scale education.
Man I wish I had a time machine and could go back into the day when these cars were new. America was at its best and people were good honest hard-working people.
I had a '69 back in late '70's. Great little car. Joined the navy in 1980; gave the car to my older sister. She was driving it on the freeway in Tulsa & it caught on fire n burned to the ground. That was a great little car.
My 1971 Super Beetle was from FL. I'm from the Northeast. It was literally rust free and had non working AC. Vent pod was mounted under the dash. Not sure if that was a dealer option or not. Compressor had been removed. I can only image how much HP that was robbing when in use.
In the late 60’s my dad would buy bugs for 25-50 bucks, fix them up and sell them for 200. Hot fudge sundae’s that night. He would of loved VW Wednesday in Havasu
Merlin I noticed you struggling with bleeding the VW brakes. I would recommend a couple tricks I use in the field. 1st, an air actuated bleeder, Mityvac is the brand I use and it's been a life saver for automotive and marine for fluid extracting and brakes / clutch bleeding. 2nd, I had trouble bleeding a chopper with apes on a long springer front end. Used a syringe / section of hose to inject fluid into the caliper to force the air up. Hope that helps.
I was the bug shop around here in early 80s, my family has great stories around bugs,we have lots of them in buildings that need restored but life gets in the way. Last year my wife died from complications from an accident that happened 40 years ago, last summer I saw a bug on Facebook and bought it and spent a couple of months doing mechanicals on it and have been driving the wheels off it, nothing brings back good memories like a bug.
Man hobo freight has a air self bleeder that works second to none. Just hook the end over the fitting on the caliper, crack it open and hit the air nozzle. When done sucking fluid just close the fitting and hit the next side. It is so easy to use and it's only $35
I want to cry every time I see you working on all the older VW stuff here in Canada the older stuff is few and far between especially the kit cars that were made with them like the Manx still regret not buying a 52 mg kit that was a VW base when I was 16.
I always pulled the tank and cleaned the filter in the bottom of the tank. A bug with 1600 will run right at 20 miles on what is in the line when the filter is plug.
I always wanted a VW so when I got the chance I got a clean (stock) 65 Bug. I sourced out a VW shop in Peoria AZ, gave them a ton of $$ for a 1915 (New everything HI Po), Dual webers (I got empi crap) pro street trans, 12V, updated brakes, ect.. ect....... The best of everything. The car never ran for shit. I had it towed back 6 times for it not running. I gave up. I Cut my losses, and sold it for 1/2 what I had invested. Funny part is I had asked A lot of VW members what shop to stay away from they all said this was a great shop, for parts. ZERO of them would have their cars worked on there as I learned afterwards. Thanks VW members and that Shop.
I’ve got a 72 bug convertible still original grandpa bought it new he loved bugs , runs great no rust and has 73,000 miles , I got it in 1988 after his death, , I love bringing it out and driving it the looks I get
Oh man , what a story from Lucas story, I’m amazed at that history historical his mom and dad finishing tha mint in reverse mom with the throttling the throttle through the back window, nice , ,BigAl California thanks

I had a 63 Sedan and we put a 1800 with dual carbs on it and at one time moved 15" speaker from a Curtis Mathis Stereo to use like a Sub Woofer, guess if I was to own another first choice would be a Karman Ghia although building a Herbie might be fun
Truthfully...I can't think of a better place to have a car meet than at In N Out Burger! Not only cool cars but great food!. Thank you Merlin for taking this journey and bringing us along. Lots of nice older VW's there. They sure are gems. Back in the 60's...they were just cars that got great fuel mileage...but we didn't need it back then. I had 4x4's and gas was cheap and plentiful...till the gas shortage...and that started the change. Thanks again Merlin.
Merlin is just the coolest cat in town. Man I wish I could make it out that way some time just too hang out with a fella and learn a fraction of what he knows. Bet the next video is Merlin fixing light for that older fella
Five VW beetles, hate to say it those are rookie numbers 😂 I've had 40+ and scrapped another 30, but that was before there were bringing cool money.$$$. Great story and a cool clean ride.
another great video.... I much have missed one of youths great pleasures.... owning a VW bug. May have to run out and bug one of those original bugs after watching you guys... Thanks
I drove a 64 Bug back in the 70's when I was in high school for a local drug store. Used it to deliver prescription drugs to mostly elderly community. Tough little car!!
I'm in W. Mich, decades ago had a buddy with a nice van/bus, in the winter he went out 20 mins before he needed to leave, & lit a fire in his woodstove! By then all the windows were melted off, & a small fan took care of defrosting. Certainly worked better than the original, lol! Thanx !
Love old VWs, had a sandrail i built myself and Dune buggy my father in law brought back to Michigan from California, still have the buggy but sold the rail, couldnt hardly get my old bucket in and out of it any more, Vdubs are the only vehicle you can repair trail side with a just a leatherman tool.
Merlin thanks again for another great video . . with this one showcasing like you said a small slice of us Local Havasu VW peps I'm up for it being a Wed thing that was fun . . . Bill
I grew up in So.Cal. my brother and I used to paint Bugs in our garage and had fun doing it and learning about the VW movement as people put it. My brother built a Bug with of course a really nice paint job and all of the new parts we bought at a VW shop in Azusa California and the parts that were restored from the Pomona fair grounds Auto swap meet. everyone has a bug story my brother built his bug and was on his way to work and some trucker almost took him off the face of the earth His car was cherry and it was junk in one day on its maiden voyage as he was side swiped in the Rain on the 605 frwy. It took him another couple of months to fix and sell it He never built another one. take care.
Hi Merlin. That's a pretty sweet little bug you have there. Who would have that the rag top mechanism was so compilated? fine German engineering! Looked like a good time at the meet and greet. Lots of nice VWs there!
Man that was great. Loved it. I wish I had known you when my daughter had her VW. She got stuck so many times when it wouldn’t start. Had it in a VW shop and they never figured it out. One of her friends from school said they had someone that could fix it. Well they took it and we never saw it again! Paid $4,000 for it. My ex husband said we paid for a $4,000 painful job! Thanks Merlin. Really enjoyed the video
I remember a rail VW powered dragster at LACR 6 .50 s in the quarter mile, 180 or s, shifting 4 gears, it was call the no doz VW dragster m rail, lol 10.00 second different volks for different Strokes, funny car VW , Fiat mid engine 3.0 liter 4 spe 10.s all day long , nice good ol day of LACR , BigAl California thanks
Greetings from Germany... Luv'ed it... got my brain to thinking about VW's made some notes to self while listening to the VW Stories. I bought an 82 VW California Specs Pancake 6 Vanagon in 85. Drove it from California to Virigina and shipped it back to Germany in 1989. Unfortunately it Sucked a valve in number 6 cylinder and I learned the hard way 'You don't remove the motor tin just to keep little oil leak clean. So I rebuilt the motor and soon after I sold it and the fellow who bought it said it was gonna be shipped to Malaysia. So that van was a literal world traveler.
The passion these people have for their VWs is commendable! The bugers clubs have a lot of history in their love for anything VW! Merlin, I love your passion in the way you show the history in the automotive industry. Keep up the great content, and I'll catch you on the next. ✌️ 😊
Merlin the original OG of fabrication at it again on the VW bug. Thanks for taking us subscribers along for the ride. Love the channel. Keep up the great work. 👍✌️🤙🤙🍀🍀🍀🍀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😃🤗🤪😋😝🤭😂🪄🪄🎩.
29°F when I got up this morning and going to a balmy 34. The only snow we got 2 weeks ago melted, the ground wasn't frozen, but there is more on the way. I could handle your 67 all year round, but the 100°+ days you can keep.
I missed out on a 1956 VW here in NZ it went for $12,000 at a private sale unfortunately i found out about it 10 minutes after the sale started and it was 20 minutes drive away and when i got there it had just been sold it was yellow and still on 6 volt system completely origional in mint condition.
My brother had one from the sixties. One day when it stopped on the road, he got out and was messing with the engine. After a while my sister-in-law asked him what was he doing Turns out he was changing the engine. He would carry a spare in the front trunk and just change out the engine when the rear one quit. Then when he got home, he would fix the problem one and put it in the trunk for next time he needed it.
I had that very same vw in very same color bought new in 1963 when I was 17 in high school the yr Kennedy was shot. Had it for 3 yrs till my brother rolled it. Fun car. Got a new one in 67 ,and had it till 73
I just picked up some air-cooled VW parts from a friend who was moving to a new house. Like I need more VW Treasures 😂 but I picked them up just the same. Now to finish what I have started 😮 and fall into one of those sweet deals you seem to find.

I love the episodes talking to random legends. Great to have these stories last forever instead of being lost forever.
