I recently purchased the newest model of Marshall dsl5 and it’s fantastic. No pedals needed and perfect volume for a house. Sounds great loud and quiet. I don’t understand when people say it sounds boxy; it’s the best small amp I’ve ever heard. No pedals needed!
Hi Elmo! Some time ago I asked you what you`re thinking about Supro Amps. Now I know the answer: I purchaded the Supro 10, used I (doub tit) for 300. I got a real strong 5 Watt amplifier. It has everything you need, 2 tone control, a Master volume , a volume, spring reverb, Power, Standby 2 Effects, Drive and Boost. My favourite practice amp I have owned is the Orange Crush 12.. it has one channel and a separate gain and overdrive, when blended creates interesting tonal variety and it has a analogue signal, whilst being solid state. I have owned low wattage valve amps and didn't really get on with them as well as I did with the Orange 12. Really great review btw👏 👍
Turning the guitar volume down after playing dry… I am still smiling.. 😂 Love your vids, bro. I decided for the Marshall DSL 1 HR over the Harley Benton… I am restarting after some time without guitars and it just had to be tube this time… But you cannot go wrong with the cube… It sounds marvelous. On a very low budget I would look for a used Fender Mustang V1 or V2. Handsome gear with a good tone.
100-percent agree with Micro Cube recommendation, a slight caveat to the "no amp" recommendation, it's fine for learning scales, even songs etc., but if you are a new-ish player and haven't learned good muting technique with mid to high gain, primarily practicing with no amp and then plugging in to an amp and playing with gain could be problematic. If you are an experienced player and/or started out with an amp then yes, a great solution to playing almost anywhere (except the toilet) and not annoying family and neighbors.
I confess - I use option 1. Except I pick up an old Suzuki acoustic. No chords, no power, easy storage, clear tone and it has never failed like my old Roland Cube 80X. Good for a beginner like me. Thanks for the review.

It's kinda funny that you made this video in response to Rob Chapman then not long after Chapman made a video about how good the HB Tube 15 is. The circle of life!
Your first recommendation, where you agree with RC, leads to the question ... 'which is the best electric guitar for playing acoustically?'. Ok, all will say it depends on the particular guitar, but I mean on average. As a starter, I have a Telecaster Thinline which sounds not bad and is of course aided by the chambers. Views welcome.
I usually use my 50th anniversary JCM1 mini stack at home, and usually leave it on the 0.1watt setting. It's more than loud enough with the 2-1x10" cabs. I recently got the Supro Delta King 10(there's an 8 and 12 aswell). Its excellent for all types of music, clean, high gain, blues, low/high volume. Totally blows away the blues Jr. My next one will be the Supro Black Magick head/cab. For battery powered, I use either a Vox G3 mini, or a Laney Lionheart mini

So happy to see the Tube15 in there. I was afraid it was too big for a practice amp, so I wasn't sure if I should buy it or not. Considering how high I hold your opinion, Elmo, now I don't have any doubt :)
I like Marshall CODE 25. I was using it in my local guitar store. I'm trying to learn playing guitar and my goal is be able to shredd. Marshall i good amp for metal and rock. It sounded cool with Ibanez GRGR 121 DX guitar, which i want to buy when i save money.

Very informative. I bought a micro-cube on your recommendation last year. Great amp. Now I want the little Marshall or Harley Benton as well. Whack @#! That was my wife. I will stick with the micro-cube. For now. #GAS
Thanks for this guide. I was on the fence about buying the dark terror as it is super affordable and sounds killer but I was worried it'll be very loud for my bedroom setup. I think an eq and a volume boost in the fx loop might do the trick.
Roland Micro Cube blows everything else away. I started playing again at 60 with more money than sense and talent. Bought a Micro Cube early on and liked it but wanted something better for my office use (where low volume is critical). I tried almost everything up to Princeton reverb (with pedals of course) and Marshall DSL5. The latest effort was Marshall DSL1 (the DSL 5 with greenback is now in my home studio and absolutely love it). The DSL1 was a horrible ice pick! Reboxed it to return and to fill the void, dug out the old Roland MC. OMG! that little thing was put away while I ran through all that money. For low volume applications, the MC is BETTER than them all including the Princeton. Soooo many nice tones and anything else you would want.
It’s really hard to get Harley Benton in the States ( USA ) right now ....but the tube 15 is available at Monoprice for 249.00 USD ....it is the exact same amp .
Great video Elmo. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Positive Grid Spark but as you said it's all subjective. Great mention for the Ziltoid puppet in the background 🤘🤘🤘
Great content, as always. I am looking at modeling amps that have either 8” or 12” speakers. I play soft fingerstyle blues and some nice, mostly clean chord progressions. I play exclusively to low, bedroom-level decibels. I know that when you crank amps up, even a little, the larger speaker has a fuller, richer tone. But at the levels I play, just around speaking level or slightly higher, will I get a fuller tone from the 12” speaker or will playing at such low volumes negate any of the benefits of the larger speaker?
Hi. Very interesting video thanks. Here's my subjective view. Probably should've been titled something like "Top 5 practice amps which can sound similar to my beloved Marshall 1987x". Personally if I had to choose a Marshall practice amp my preference would be a JCM 800 or 2000 sound, let's say the JCM 800 SC20H and pair it with a 12" speaker cab. Or a 2525C Jubilee. Or an older TSL. All with master volume for adjusting from practice to gig levels and gain as desired. Guitar is an instrument that can play any musical style and every manufacturer has a fantastic amp or number of amps capable of being great for practice. You might be desiring different sounds and feelings too eg: Vox, Orange, Mesa, Fender, Engl, Laney, Hiwatt, etc - all non Marshall right? Elmo it appears gravitates to a 1987x amp boosted with an overdrive - great sound which many love, but not for everyone - if I played that style I would use Mesa or Orange or Engl as my opinion. No amp? Why not play an acoustic with super light strings? Elmo makes everything sound great! Regards.
Elmo. Do you like the Blackstar Silverline? It has no tubes so it gets great sound at very low volume. I also have the Marshall DSL5CR and the Vox AC4C1-12. It seems more manageable in a small condo with kids.
Ciao Elmo! What’s about the use of an active load box+cab simulator (as TeoNotes Torpedo captor x or captor + cab m)? In case someone has already big Marshall’s at home... 😎...but then of course you need external speakers (or “hifi stereo system” speakers)...🤔
@@samain1804 It is 'Kelwl' IMHO..... I didn't buy any cabs with it as I have many different variants of cabs already. I have tried it with 1x12 (Celestion T70), 2x12 (Vintage 30's) and 4x12 (standard Marshall cab 1960A).... With the right settings and EQ, they all sound good (on 100w mode), but I will admit that the 1x12 is great for that 'Deluxe thing'. Is it the best amp ever?... No, it has its problems... for example I don't think it takes external pedals that well, but the built in units are workable....For slightly more 'serious' situations luckily I have my trusty 65DRRI or my JCM800 (2203).... Which most certainly are.... Kewl. lol
Say have you checked out the VHT special super six ultra all hand wired point to point! Tube or valve amp a six watt single Twelve inch speaker if you haven’t you should! You won’t regret it!
@@MrPolevaulter It’s only $400 here in the US! And you can find them used in great-good condition for $200-$300 so by no means expensive quite a good deal for quality!

Yeah, KDH discussed that. The good thing about Rob Chapman is that he did apologize. He had a video on that if memory serves. Stevie T is a whole different matter though.
The Harley Benton sounded great I bet it be fine in a club setting. Soundguys always telling us we're too loud half the time. Or they used to. Thanks, Elmo. The Roland actually sounds too good I see why it's #1.
Good stuff Elmo, nice guitar playing as well, thanks to you, I did not order the Yamaha THX5 portable guitar amp, and ordered the micro cube instead. It sounds great on your demo. Have you tried playing through the boss katana air wireless yet ? Let me know your opinion on that amp. Thank you
Yeah practicing without an amp. Something I do many times a day, just pick the guitar off the stand and noodle for a few minutes before going back to work...
I would recommend it. THR5 is good enough as you will be plugging in for recording so you can use the THR remote app to edit your tones deeper. Getting thr10 would not be much of an upgrade as even with the additional knobs for changing tone, you need to connect to an app to have full control.
Elmo I got the Roland Cube but you said you used a hyperfuzz and not an OD pedal, is that right?- as I couldn't get the sound you had on the classic setting. Also i'm led to believe that the behringer fuzz isa replica of that pedal.
I didn't. I sold the amp to my luthier friend. He put in a Celestion of some kind, but I forget which one it was. It does sound a bit better, but I'd have to A/B them, and know how much the whole thing cost to even guess if it was worth it. I think he thinks it was.
I like the sound of that "No Amp" ; such creamy, lush, super tight, ice picky... [INSERT SILLY MARKETING TERM HERE] All good Elmo - all products i'd agree with compared to others at the same price points!
He didn’t like it but I do. Then again, I have the Micro Cube and I never use it. I think for low volume practice, if you want something that doesn’t take much room it’s great, especially if you live in apartment. Bit expensive though.
Yes, when you don't want the power tubes to break up (output stage distortion). No, if you want them to. The volume pot in the FX Loop will change how your amp sounds because of that. But so does the attenuator, just for another reason.
@@The_Macaroon Welcome. I think that, if you have a compressor or another pedal with a volume/level poti, you can try out to lower the signal with it in the FX loop.

Great video Elmo. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Positive Grid Spark but as you said it's all subjective. Great mention for the Ziltoid puppet in the background 🤘🤘🤘
Ziltoid ftw!
@@MrPolevaulter You have Devin Townsend's Ziltoid Puppet behind you! I am from Canada and Devin is one of my favourite musicians.
@@harolddeschenes4640 Mine too :)
I use a Nux Mighty Plug (65€) with earphones or even with an USB to the laptop so I don't have to be aware of the battery level.
Cool!
Regards.
Thanks! I definitely gravitate towards the Marshall, which of course influences any opinions I might have on practice amps :)
I still use my marshall mg 15 dfx for practice👍
Cool!
i had a dsl1 i loved it., i sold it and im on the hunt again for a lil practice amp., not always wanting to plug into my afd100 lol
Yeah, it's often more convenient with a small amp.
Elmo. Do you like the Blackstar Silverline? It has no tubes so it gets great sound at very low volume. I also have the Marshall DSL5CR and the Vox AC4C1-12. It seems more manageable in a small condo with kids.
It was OK, but nothing special imo.
@@MrPolevaulter Thanks
Ciao Elmo! What’s about the use of an active load box+cab simulator (as TeoNotes Torpedo captor x or captor + cab m)? In case someone has already big Marshall’s at home... 😎...but then of course you need external speakers (or “hifi stereo system” speakers)...🤔
Haven't tried one of those yet.
@@MrPolevaulter , “danke” for the reply!
Im really enjoying the Katana 100 head...
...and I’ve tried loads of ‘em.... good for recording too!. ;)
Cool!
Kewl! What speakers and cab did you get? Wonder how it sounds on a 2x12 loaded with greenbacks or even a mismatched set of speakers lol

Haven't done that, not yet at least.

Yeah, the Roland is amazingly good.
@@MrPolevaulter it's too good hahaha
Hi Elmo, love your videos man ...can you tell me how is the laney mini amp stb? Planning to buy it. It costs around 100 usd ini India.
Thanks. Don't think I've tried that.
@@MrPolevaulter If you can please do check them out and make a review on laney battery powered amps.
Thank you
Thanks! Haven't tried the Katana Air yet, no.
Thx. Great picks! What pedals you using with the Marshall DSL-1CR to get that sound?
Thanks! Strymon Riverside.
Can you please do a full review of the 1987x? I’m thinking about getting one
I have an old one. It's not very good, since I was just starting my RUclips thingy back then. Here: ruclips.net/video/jPhz-vBGBAg/видео.html
@@MrPolevaulter Ok, I’ll check it 😎👌
Great review, but more importantly, are you related to Ragnar Lothbrok?
For me it's my recent Fender Pro Junior LTD IV. I quess I have to try the Tube 15 at some time.
The good thing is it's so cheap, that it's not even a big risk to try it out.
I was thinking about a wet-dry setup and this should be a safe place to try it out without busting the budget.
Of all the advice you give to us in the video, the last piece was the best.....
Just play, simple
Thanks for your review. Do you have an opinion of the Blackstar HT5 MKii?
Haven't tried it, so no.
And thanks :)
@@MrPolevaulter You're welcome!
Yeah practicing without an amp. Something I do many times a day, just pick the guitar off the stand and noodle for a few minutes before going back to work...
Good stuff!
hey man! I was thinking of buying a Yamaha Thr5 to play and also record my youtube videos, would you suggest it?
Go for the thr 10 it has more headroom (or thr 30 but it is a bit pricey)
I would recommend it. THR5 is good enough as you will be plugging in for recording so you can use the THR remote app to edit your tones deeper. Getting thr10 would not be much of an upgrade as even with the additional knobs for changing tone, you need to connect to an app to have full control.
@@AxemanMessiah I think he could get the older model for a cheaper price. No need for the thr ii. It is not substantially better.
Personally I don't like the THR series, but if you like how it sounds, then sure thing.
@@MrPolevaulterAgreed it's difficult to get great tones out of them
Elmo I got the Roland Cube but you said you used a hyperfuzz and not an OD pedal, is that right?- as I couldn't get the sound you had on the classic setting. Also i'm led to believe that the behringer fuzz isa replica of that pedal.
Yeah. It just works as a clean boost.
Don't know about the Behringer.

What did you upgrade your HB15 speaker to, and was it worth it?
I didn't. I sold the amp to my luthier friend. He put in a Celestion of some kind, but I forget which one it was. It does sound a bit better, but I'd have to A/B them, and know how much the whole thing cost to even guess if it was worth it. I think he thinks it was.
@@MrPolevaulter thank you for the reply, perhaps it's time to borrow and revisit the HB15! :)

How about the new Yamaha THRII series? I hear they are strong contenders.
He didn’t like it but I do. Then again, I have the Micro Cube and I never use it. I think for low volume practice, if you want something that doesn’t take much room it’s great, especially if you live in apartment. Bit expensive though.

Hey Elmo are you saying all those expensive attenuators and powersoaks are unnecessary with a simple volume pot?
Yes, when you don't want the power tubes to break up (output stage distortion). No, if you want them to. The volume pot in the FX Loop will change how your amp sounds because of that. But so does the attenuator, just for another reason.
@@humann0x thanks Sebastian 👍
@@The_Macaroon Welcome. I think that, if you have a compressor or another pedal with a volume/level poti, you can try out to lower the signal with it in the FX loop.
