  • An arrangement between the Great Western Society and the Severn Valley Railway saw BR Blue liveried King Class No.6023 'King Edward II' heading up to the Midlands for testing on the SVR. The purpose of this was to test the King's modified draughting and exhaust arrangements - designed by Jos Koopman - under load. These runs would take place up to 6 times a day, for two days - originally three, but the final day was later cancelled - between Bridgnorth and Highley, while the SVR was closed to regular traffic. The formation would consist of 6023, 7 Mk1 coaches and Class 50 No.50031 'Hood'. 50031 would tow the consist down to Highley, where the King would then head the train back to Bridgnorth, with 50031 dead on the back, making the equivalent of 10 or 11 coaches on the drawbar. The first day saw 6023 pass her tests with flying colours, meaning day two for "playtime", much to my advantage!
We start off this short video with a shot of 6023 passing over the road at Hampton Loade, before capturing her at several locations, climbing up the 1 in 100 gradients of Eardington Bank!
In order, the locations include: Hampton Loade, Hay Bridge, Eardington Halt, Eardington Bank and Crossing Cottage.
Filmed on a Panasonic VXF990 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.

Thanks for braving the elements, Kris, to bring us a super record of this special event. Looking forward to seeing, and hearing, more of the Blue King - this is a real appetiser. Your customary excellent result, but given the conditions, you must have worked really hard to bring us the quality finish. Kind regards, Bob

Doesn't steam come into its own when the temperature is low? Marvellous smoke effects and this clip has them in abundance! A Like no question!

Looking & sounding good. Wonder if we'll ever see her on the main line. Would certainly look the part on the Torbay Express!

Hopefully someday, but, I doubt we'll see her on the main line during her current boiler ticket. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

I really wish I could see some locomotives like this in the United States. Our equipment is beautiful, but we have nothing so magnificent as this.

Very fortunate with the weather, it looked nowhere near as windy as it was down here, and made for some quite superb shots through Eardington.

It might not look or sound it, but, that wind was absolutely unforgiving, at times. I couldn't feel my fingers by the end of it, haha! Thanks for watching and commenting, as always, Andrei :)

Is it just me, or are there a lot of steam leaks? It looks as if the relief valves are opening on every stroke in the first long sequence. GWR engines with Stephenson gear used to do that at short cut-offa, but the King shouldn't as it has Walschaerts gear and is obviously working at a long cut-off , from the noise and gradient.

Someone needs to sort out that leaking cylinder (if that’s what it is)!!

A dribbling cock. As Kieth Appleton would call it.
      ~ laughs ~
Some times cylinder cocks do not close properly after the condensed steam of the initial few strokes has been dealt with.

It seemed to be coming from the level of the cylinders rather than the cocks beneath them from what I could tell. Either way, a dribbling cock is a much more amusing explanation!
