This is an expanded and updated version of Nan Goldin’s seminal book The Other Side, originally published in 1993. There will be a revised introduction by Goldin, and for the first time the voices of those whose stories are represented. Now being released at a time when the discourse around gender and sexual orientation is evolving, The Other Side traces some of the history that informs this new visibility.
The first photographs in the book are from the 1970s, when Goldin lived in Boston with a group of drag queens and documented their glamour and vulnerability. In the early eighties, Goldin chronicled the lives of transgender friends in New York when AIDS began to decimate her community. In the nineties, she recorded the explosion of drag as a social phenomenon in New York, Berlin, Bangkok and the Philippines, photographing their public personas while showing their real lives backstage. Goldin’s newest photographs are intimate portraits, imbued with tenderness, of some of her most beloved friends.

I thought, she was about to cry saying about her friends. Touching. And a real inspiration for all the young artists trying to find their voice! which Nan, certainly, does have
Nan and I crossed paths frequently back in The Other Side days, and shared a few memorable things:
A love of clothes designed by Norma Kamali, and a close friendship with our Beloved Kenny Angelico aka Ivy.
I took over Kenny’s apt. on Myrtle St., and remember Nan and her Posse hitting the daylight on Beacon Hill, after owning the night at the infamous Other Side club. That’s where Fabulous Music, Drag Shows, and foul mouthed MC Sylvia Sidney reigned Supreme.
While deeply connected to her Friends, who were also her Photographic subjects, I regret never making an effort to engage in any meaningful conversation with her. Now, 50 years later, I take great Joy and Pride in remembering those Evolutionary, and Revolutionary days, with the Beautiful people in it, of which Nan was one.
That's really amazing, never forget
what a nice comment
She said it all. Love her.
an illuminating discourse by Nan Goldin. I didn't understand her work. I am beginning to "get it" now.... Strangely one of her last comments in this clip is "I care enormously about light now". I'm with her there
One of the greatests.
His pictures show the very thing I'll embrace to death about we humans.
Guts, mess of illusions, meaning of the world, endpoint to each other.
Nice Movie. I like Nan Goldin' s photo.
Beautiful, and real
Loved her work in Fata Morgana.
I am looking for the name of the short film in which Nan Goldin's "Nan and Brian in Bed" photo is shown in a scene. Does anybody know the name of the movie and/or where can I watch it?
GOD I FUCKIN LOVE HER
what's the melody on the background?
Good evening Zinon, at the end of the film in the titles I saw the name of the producer: Aaron Bircher. I googled his name in combination with Steidl. I found out his full name: Aaron Noah Bircher. I checked to see if he is on twitter, and yes, he is: @aaron_bircher So I sent him a little tweet and asked him about the music. As soon as I hear, I will let you know. Wish you a beautiful weekend. Kind regards from Amsterdam 🌼

"I’m not Really Interested in Photography" Yeah. It shows.
Depressing photos of depressed people
Good so you admit you totally missed the point
When did you start doing drugs? How old were you when you were prescribed Oxycontin? (51) Was your physician responsible for your addiction, really? Can you not accept personal responsibility? Are do you have an ulterior motive for your campaign against Purdue and the Sacklers, namely - self-promotion?
recycled material, mediocre photographer #imo
