Personal story with this one; I was in New York City in 2011, tabling at the MoCCA Festival. Total wash. Walked away with $70 in revenue. But I had Rush prints I'd made, and someone who happened by said Rush was playing at Madison Square that night and they had an extra ticket. They asked if I wanted to go. I think I said "Yes" before they got the full question out. Rush was on the Time Machine Tour, meaning they were going to play Moving Pictures front-to-back, including this song (for the first time since 1983). When Geddy started singing about New York, the rear projectors brought up footage of Grand Central Station and the crowd cheered. I thought "I'm seeing this song in the one place it was made to be played, and I got in for free."
Thanks for sharing your memory with us. Pure GOLD! P. S. I love the fact that you have Patrick Troughton as your page picture! Early Dr. Who up until Tom Baker is awesome!
Great choice of song. I have always said that "Camera Eye" is Rush's most technically brilliant piece of music. Every note, every nuance is perfectly placed and perfectly played.
One if the most underrated guitar solos ever. I always found it haunting yet beautiful. Geddy's bass work on this song and the albums Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves and Signals is just brilliant. Rush could do no wrong during the period.
Funny enough, this was just one of Alex’s toughest solos to compose. They were recording at Le Studio and he wasn’t able to come up with something he was happy with. So he decided to go outside and gaze at the moon for inspiration Just as he looked up, a big cloud rolled by and covered up the moon, so he had to go back inside and just work the solo. He called it the most difficult he had ever written.
@@joconnell8145 That doesn't change the fact that "Witch Hunt" is 39 years old and has never been timelier. We don't have to get more specific than that.
Your reactions to Rush are some of the best I've seen. A lot of people don't "get" Rush... the details, the imagery, the depth. YOU, my friend, seem to "get" it. Enjoy your RUSH journey. There's a lot of music left to go!
Countdown, The Weapon, The Body Electric, Head Long Flight and many many many more!!!! I spent hours trying to learn Neil's parts... He was a monster!!!! Rip Brother.
This is and always will be my favorite Rush song. It presents everything that is Rush and is in my opinion, if forced to choose, the one song that tells you everything you need to know about Rush.
On a side note. I've been watching you for a while now. It was this reaction that made me subscribe. You actually understand the genius that is... Rush.
Very happy you’ve come across this song. I’m old enough to remember when Moving Pictures was new. It was my “gateway drug” to Rush. The entire album was a brilliant revelation but I played “The Camera Eye” over, and over, and over... Thank you for taking me back and I’m very happy you’ve discovered an album (and a band) I have loved for decades. Peace.
Watching you react to these songs makes me feel exactly the way I did when I first heard these tunes almost 20 years ago... Rush truly is one of the best bands ever, not just rock bands... ALL BANDS ALL MUSIC! Unbelievable musicianship and in tegrity
Well done getting into RUSH. You will discover they strayed away from being mainstream and stayed as they were. My favourite band since I was 13 , I am now 53. They are quite unique in their music and friendship. Enjoy the rest of the Albums. We all have different favourites. SIGNALS is mine as its a heavy Synth LP But all of us have our personal faves. The Camera eye is a work of art.
I was 12 years old when got into Rush & im 54 now lol. We share a lifetime of listening to these three musical gods! I remember, when i was 16 years old, i hitch hiked 200 miles to see them live in London.. Well worth it, before the 200 miles hitch hike back home lol. Was the Signals tour. Rush are & always will be .. Legendary!
Just the structure of Alex's last solo in this song and how he approaches it winds it out and then exits out of it is just stunning to me. One of the best solos ever written on a guitar in my opinion. He is just an effing phenomenal guitarist in his writing and composition
Out of their entire library of music..this is my favorite Rush song...Musically a masterpiece and I think Geddy's signature song. The flow of this tune is awesome. The main riff just drives the song and all three are at the pinnacle of their game on this one.
Kudos for checking out this classic track by Rush (one of my faves from Moving Pictures). You're the first person I've seen to-date to check out this particular progressive rock gem! Keep up the good work/keep on exploring! LL
Check out sometime their last album Clockwork Angels. It's a concept album based on a novel with the same name that Neil Peart wrote. The only time they used backup musicians (string septet) other than when Aimee Mann (Til Tuesday) sang backup on Time Stands Still.
as a Rush fan for going on forty years, I always tell people that I could not pick a favorite Rush album. But being that Moving Pictures was my introduction to this band, I can say that it may be my favorite album on the the strenght of the Camera Eye alone.... every time I hear it blows my mind like no other Rush song. Don't get me wrong lots of Rush songs blow my mind, thats why I'm forty years in.....
My favourite Rush song ever. When I finally got to hear it live on the MP 30th anniversary tour, I stood there grinning and crying like a baby. Sweet memories. . . flashing very quickly by.
One of their most epic tunes for sure, glad to see this one happening!! Those are actually police whistles, but not knowing the context of the song would make it easy to confuse...this tune is about the 2 cities, New York and London. VERY trippy and cool background video you got goin' on there!! YES!!! You nailed it about the title!! If you listen carefully, in part II after the line "A quality of light unique to every city's streets" there is a pause between lines and you can faintly hear a "arrup....good one Tom" in the background. GREAT reaction, you really nailed this one down. Thanks!! Another great song is the last track called Vital Signs, give it a listen!
You should check out the song finding my way by rush. It’s the first song off their first album. For their first album they had a different drummer named John Rutsey who left the band after their debut album due to an illness stemming from diabetes, he sadly passed in 2008.
Yeah, man... This song is a gem. EVERY song on Moving Pictures is. Love your stuff, man... It's like we're hanging out, chillin' with great tunes. Keep on keepin on Jay Rah! 😁
Thanks for this. Rush moved away from writing lots of longer songs once the 80s came around, but when they did write one, they were like this. "Camera Eye" has a nice flow to it. They were not trying to cram a ton of technicality into it.
Now check out the Nobody's Hero song of them. A piece of work from another different era in terms of style and musical approach, and again - with a good message in it.
Such an awesome track. Funny story: my vinyl copy of Moving Pictures developed a legendary scratch on this track. Skipped perfectly making the text THE FOCUS IS SHARP IN THE CITY into THE FOCUS IS SHITTY. Always cracked me and my friends up.
Bravo my man. You have passed the Rush standard songs like Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Freewill, 2112, Subdivisions, the drum solo... You are in Rush next level territory now. Last song Rush composed lasting more than 10 minutes but could be 2 minutes it's so seamless you just want more. Neil lived in London for 18 months or so before he joined Rush in the very early 70's possibly even 1969.
I used to trick my local radio station in to playing this (via call-in request) to see if they’d let it go the entire run-time. Daytime....nope (fade out about halfway). Night? 100% success.
