  • We are going to do the high-amp discharge test for the #Seplos #Polo #Pouch-Cell battery. Discharging the 100Ah battery with over 90A until the BMS turns off. How performant are these LiFePO4 pouch cells? Can it handle such an extreme test and how hot does it get after one hour delivering this high current?

    100 Ah and just 90 Ah is really a bit too short.
    Makes me wonder what would happen with half c rating of 50 A cause then we should see 100 Ah or we have again a battery issue as we have seen before with the seplos mason battery check where they had been using their own cells which had been weak, about 10% under delivered.
    I can remember these cause it was the decision point to not get their battery case nor their batteries , just only the seplos bms just 1 year ago.
    Feels like all the other offer from gobel and what not that have now become rackbattery vendors or kit vendors but with their own cells of unknown source when I had always asked for EVE or CATL or BYD. I can nowadays get a 10 kWh battery with a 5 year german waranty for 2500€ from Berlin with BYD cells instead of partificpating in a big lottery what brand and quality might arrive.

      I think the unbalanced cells are the main problem. They stop the charging process when the other cells are not full yet. When discharging, the other cells are empty first.
      Also fast discharge causes more heat loss and therefore never reaches the Tesla.

    Crazy discharge, it’s amazing how much your Tesla can take and retain. Does it never worry you all these batteries in such a hot environment?

      The newer Tesla Model 3 at least wants to warm the cells to 50ºC to be able to do the maximum charge in and I do believe those have the quite similar prismatic cells instead of the previous pouch cells with cobalt chemistry. My thought are that then the electrolyte is more fluidly flowing an no metallic lithium is forming to the other electrode, as the flow inside the battery can keep up with the current coming in or is this a concern only when charging, if someone could enlighten me? This the reason, why LiFePO4 batteries need to be above freezing temperatures to be able to take in charge properly.
      Someone with more knowledge could give input on how the different temperatures affect the cells when discharging, like how they age and how to get the absolute max C-rates when compared to the temperature.

    Not too surprised that the pouch cells don't seemed to be able to supply the stated 100Ah, although 1C is a bit much. There was some significant balance-differences, I noticed.
    In the several tests I have seen for pouch cells, they are often just right on the stated capacity or, as in this test, about 10% too low.
    I do wonder if the NEEEEEY active balancer would make things better for this unit?
    I am worried that the SEPLOS BMS stated 74,8 degrees Celsius, with the 80 to 90A drawn, this BMS should be able to cope without such much heat? (50 to 60 degrees C?)
    But maybe I'm just too negative in my perceptions, and wrong.
    I do look forward to your further tests etc in this arena!

      The BMS does get hot. This is just a 100A BMS so we drove it right at the limit. 75°C seems reasonable for the electronic pushing 4500W.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia My mistake, you're right of course! I keep forgetting it is not a 12v system, 100A at such high(er) voltages is of course a lot of power, and thus indeed heat. MY sincere apologies for this oversight!

    I don’t understand what is wrong with higher balance tolerances? I mean why do you want to be 0.01 close to the wire the batteries need a little room.

    Seems like the battery resetting itself to 100% full because a single cell hit the over voltage protection is a bad implementation because it could just be a runaway cell.

      Not a bad implementation, because you can damage your cell and some inverters will keep pushing power if SoC isn’t 100%. The problem is always how to keep cells balanced.

      @@gfjardim1983 Except that the BMS can, and should, be configured to cut charging or discharging in situations like that and if the battery just resets to 100%, not because it’s actually full but because a single cell is running away, it will be harder to realize there is a problem and figure out what is going on, especially in situations where you have a large bank of batteries which would be typical for a home.

      @@inmyimage1081 agreed, my BMS disables the charging input, set the SoC to 100% and send an alarm to the inverter, requesting a “Force Charge”. The first action protects the runaway cell, the second action signals that the battery can’t receive any additional charge, and the third let the user know that something is wrong with the battery.

    The delivery times at Seplos are very disappointing this year. I ordered the POLO-W Battery 3 months ago and it's still not here. Timely projects cannot be implemented in this way. Anyone have similar experiences?

    Dear Friend , We can use different type Battery (Li-Iron and Lifepo4) in parallel in same invertor , If you can provide a video for it

      That's a very bad idea, they have different voltage curves and target voltage. You should not be doing this.
      If Andy is going to be a video, it will be to show why you shouldn't do this

      Some people do that but I'm not a fan of that. Can be done for a temporary time but stick to one chemistry if you want a reliable system.

    @andy: I know you are crazy busy and this is not related to this video. What app other than “smart BMS” is there for Daly BMS? I have a cheap 12v battery that I can’t do settings changes on because it don’t accept the password. Just tho I would ask before I void the warranty and open it to install another BMS. If you or someone else can help I will be forever grateful

      I also have a Daly and tried a couple other apps but nothing worked. They do have a windows program to configure the bms also but you need an adapter. Assume you tried 123456

      @@inmyimage1081 yes. I didn’t buy the BMS separately. This is a 12v battery that happen to use a Daly BMS. The manufacturer don’t have an password even. I got an retailer to check. The BMS is set to cut charge at 3,75 volts….. so I guess I need to open the battery then to fix this. I got the option of swapping the battery for a new of same model but that don’t help me much.
