Thanks so much for posting this. I would love for there to still be a candlepin scene such as there was when I was trying to be one of these good bowlers. Loved this show every week.
Fran and Marilyn Onorato were in charge of our Junior Boys League at Bowl-a-Rama in Framingham. In 1975, four other boys and I won the Massachusetts Bowling Association Jr. Boys State Championship. The Onoratos could not have been prouder. That was the highlight of my candlepin bowling career.
Hey I know Steve Vadney! Or should I say knew him. Came to bowl a few times at our family’s bowling alley in Windsor Vermont. Think he mostly bowled in Claremont NH which was right across the river from Windsor! Does anyone play the CandlePin app? It’s actually pretty cool! See you there!
I'm surprised that Don Gillis was never inducted into the "Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame" in the Builder Category for his contributions to Candlepin Bowling. In fact, there are a lot of Nova Scotians who moved to other Canadian provinces or countries, and still got inducted into the "Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame". As long as you're born in Nova Scotia, or made contribution to that province's athletic scene, he's still eligible.
@@TheRealDannAlexander I'm originally from Halifax until I moved to Newfoundland in 2008. Too bad Newfoundland and Labrador doesn't have Candlepin alleys. Its mostly 5 Pin and some 10 Pin Bowling. I used to play Candlepin Bowling on a social basis while I lived in my hometown.
Gotta use Frans game as a learning experience. His game went off the rails at the end of the 1st string, but he came back and did well. In this game it's easy to lose it
Dude...the guy was 60 at the time. He was probably one of the five best bowlers into the 1980s. He bowled a 1472 at a low scoring house in 1979-1980 at a pro tour stop in Biddeford, Maine and 2nd place was barely over 1300. He also held the Massachusetts 10 string record for a while with a 1450, and had several other titles including State Tournament titles. I'd be willing to say a lot of younger bowlers today have a far worse delivery.
Like Vadney, he typically rolls a backup ball...the ball tails from left to right. Occasionally he misfires and it doesn't back up on him. But when he gets in the groove and stays there he gets hot.

Steve is a great guy, used to keep score for him as a kid. Awesome news we will be seeing more of him.
This match aired on 12 December 1992.
Its so exciting when they are so closely matched.

That was an exciting game between the 2 bowlers!

This comment. I’m from New Glasgow originally and my brother often talked about Don’s contributions.

thanks for the post 7-16-2022
Hope to see more shows from Sammy Whites if there are any
I hope Steve is doing well these days.
45:05 - harsh, but true.
That would be 'decades' Don, rest your soul.
Wasn't Fran the bowler that ended Tom Olszta's streak?
Yes. However, the following week he had a bomb match with Don Santiago...one of the lowest scoring matches in history.
@@kylebertulli4435 Really? Do you remember the score?
Santiago defeated Onorato 328-312
Yes, he ended Tom's streak in I think 1994..
Would love to see that match.
fran onoratos last apearance was on 8-4-90
R.I.P CANDLEPIN BOWLING DON GILLIS AND FAIRWAY LANES
R.I.P CANDLEPIN BOWLING DON GILLIS AND FAIRWAY LANES

fran has horrible delivery
Yeah............................But he was State Champion!??🤪
Not the worst, but it's comfortable for him so he goes with it.
