She didn't just "make a few mistakes and bail". She had the "twisties" which is a condition where you lose your spatial sense in the air. She had to step down to protect her physical and mental health. Gymnasts have become paralyzed and died in the sport. No medal is worth her life. During her one and only event that she did, she got lost in the air and only did a 1.5 twist on vault when she was supposed to do a 2.5. That is a major mistake and it shows that something was wrong with her. She stepped down for the good of the team.

She did not abandon her team. She did what was best for her team. She was thinking of her team.
