I'd say the problem isn't so much that he started out as a sport fencer. I started out that way (never really competed or got to a high level of it) and transitioned from things like epee/saber to rapier/heavy saber. The problem is that he seems to have held onto too much of the sports / athletic "it doesnt matter as long as I get the judge to think I got there" mentality of sport/olympic fencing.
Gahhh..... this might as well be sport fencing. How is this martial? Volkov's fleche attacks are just such a poor example. Yes they sort of work in this context, but frankly are likely to get you as dead as your opponent.....it's not 'ring generalship' in boxing... a straight line attack like that is a sure way to get ktfo. Danilov is the better fighter, Volkov looks like a one trick pony during this.
Gotta agree with you PalookaD. Both these guys are obviously very athletic and fast, but this is some seriously bad fencing. Two guys, both in low guards, trying to out-twitch the other fighter with linear attacks at close range. Unimaginative, ugly, and boring.
@a name Reality is that if you fight like a fool with no regard for your own safety, as Volkov did, you can get really far in some tournaments. Swordfish should be more weary lest they become pseudo sport fenimg competition instead of a historical, martial fencing competition as they should be
It *is* sport fencing. They are fencing....safely, for sport. They are competing for points in order to get "first place". That's what a sport is. It's fascinating that people don't always see this coming. What we now call "sport fencing" started out as real fencing and/or training for real fencing. Epee? The epee is/was a need-sharp dueling weapon used right up through the end of the 1800s (you can even find old reel footage of duels from the 40s/50s) that evolved sort of from a lengthening and simplification of the small sword. What we call a sport foil is derived from a blunted version of a small sword that was used to train for small sword. The limitation of target area to the torso was intended to train a fighter to go for where the organs are. Sport saber? Sure, it's gotten REALLY light and whippy, but it started out as military training/fencing with much heavier blunted sabers. Over the decades the blades got thinner, safety became more of a concern, the rules were centralized and it just spiraled out of control for there. Have you seen up close some of the rapiers they allow HEMA people to use now? Some of them are almost as thin as an epee. A 42-inch rapier blade should not feel like a dainty little epee in your hand, especially if you are being allowed to fence with a ruleset that allows for cuts.

Very low quality fencing here. Volkov obviously has an Olympic fencing background. Not martial at all more sporty than what HEMA/WMA should be.

PalookaD Do you imply that sport fencing is not martial? Then you know nothing of it
