Having lost his wife prior to the Olympic Games, he broke out in tears after winning the Gold Medal. Before she died, Matthias Steiner had promised his wife that he would win gold at Beijing 2008. At the ceremony, having fulfilled his vow, Steiner held up a picture of his wife, dedicating his victory to her. Enjoy watching the full replay of this final!

Steiner truly deserved this win! He did it for his country and he did it for his fallen wife who died in a car crash in 2007... truly inspiring... 🥺 👍
How funny. German commentary from that time:
""Lift it up, Lift iI Up, LIFT IT UP!!! (pause) HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR AUSTRIA, HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR GERMANY!
HE HAS DONE THIS FOR SUSANNE!
AND MATTHIAS STEINER IS AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION!"
👍👍👍👍

@@sequiaonda78 there was a painter that came from Austria and almost destroyed Germany, I guess its payback time.
He did it for love. That really got me.
It's incredible how strong he was at that moment, not only physically but mentally. That is what makes a real champion!
Just like his coach said, it’s those moments that define a top athlete’s career. That was his moment, and he seized it. His life would have probably been just fine if he missed the lift, in all honesty. Instead, he performed under the pressure, and made his life even better.
👍👍👍👍
Notice how Chigishev asks Steiner about the photo at 1:20:42 and see his reaction. He seems genuinely surprised and moved by the background story of Steiner's wife having died in a car accident and Steiner wanting her photo with him on the podest. It shows the mutual respect among the two athletes.
You could tell Chigishev had so much respect for Steiner. Steiner was lifting so much more than the weight itself, but the worst pain a husband could ever go through as well.
exactly what I thought....first time I saw it.
I am Austrian and we are very proud of Matthias ❤
Haha I love Chigishev's reaction at 1:13:30. He's like, "well, fair enough."
I thought his reaction was great.
i literally burst out laughing when i saw that lol
1:20:44 the trainer giving Matthias the photograph of his wife and Matthias explaining to the russian guy what this is is a beautiful moment
This is the Olympics at it's best. Evgeny Chigishev seem to be the "better" more consistent lifter, but in that one moment Matthias Steiner was able to do something extra ordinary and take the gold. Even the look from the Russian was one of "fair enough". Then when you add in Matthias' story it just becomes something that I come back to watch ever now and then, as it's just so compelling.
👍👍👍👍

for those of you looking for the exact moment M. Steiner wins gold, it is at 1:12:43
Thank You
Thx bro
i sat here just watching everything lol
@@ccqplme too.
I came here for Steiner and his wife. Its truly inspiring!!
Sad for chigishev, he deserve a gold for his career, but Steiner did something amazing, some how after 12 years is also incredible how he lifted the 258 kg in the clean and jerk, the power of emotions.
Don't forget that he won this for his deceased wife.
👍👍👍👍
But he didn't look unhappy😅
1:26:47, the Chinese lady said to her colleague : his (Steiner) wife is so beautiful !
thank you so much for the translation 💕
Matthias Steiner had a promise to keep, and he delivered, congrats to you Matthias, I’m sure your wife was standing next to you at the award ceremony
You can see the way Chigishev reacts to the photo, he knew there was no way he could compete against someone with that much motivation
I love Matthias, He just looks like a nice guy
ive seen some interviews, he is.
I love watching weightlifting. I think Steiner made me fall in love watching weightlifting when I see his video in Olympics highlights. For me individually you can really see the passion and determination in weightlifting.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
me too, guys
I cry everytime I watch this. Hast du dir so verdient, Matthias
That day, there were 4 arms lifting it.
Yess broo😔😔
Thats the power of your own will and set of mind
I remember being so happy for him not knowing at the time about his wife so re-watching this is even more emotional. Great stuff.
The most emotional moment at Olympic Games I've ever seen. 👌🤩👍
He was not lifting that 3rd attempt alone. What a sad but inspiring story.
I love how the crowd goes crazy for all the athletes
The russian guy was a class act
CHIGISHEV being 125kg while the others are 145kg and still coming 2nd is actually insane
1:20:55 Look at the reaction from the russian men, while Steiner talk about his wife. Exactly on 1:20:57 his head.. A few moments before, Steiners trainer give him the photo on the stage.
thanks for that, would've missed it.
@@peorakef i don't understand what his reaction means
@@Rose-zh5xg it went something like this:
russian: who's this?
german: my wife, have a look. she died in a car accident.
russian: she what?
german: she had a car accident and died.
russian: oh wow.
Idk why but they all look so huggable 🥺
Hahahaha i think the same.
I feel that l, they all look like giant teddy bears lol. My bf is a weightlifter/ and goes to them gym, that’s how I see him a big teddy bear. 😂

The winner is full of emotions and passions from start, which has moved me from his first try.
I never get tired of watching this iconic moment! Great, Matthias. We salute you!
The moment I watched the animated version of this, I came here to watch the real one.
Btw the animated version its makes you drop some tears. Very emotional.
Watching it again. what a magnificent scene.
Oh my, I was moved to tears 😭, what a legend
I like to think that nearly everyone in that room, including his competition was overjoyed and inspired by Steiner’s win. For he wasn’t just lifting that weight alone, but also a deep and internal weight, the worst pain a husband could ever go through. He didn’t lift it for himself or for his country. He lifted for the love of his wife who tragically died a year earlier. That alone made his winning lift all the more beautiful, powerful, and inspiring for everyone who witnessed it. He not only lifted so much physically, but mentally and emotionally, all the grief, the pain, the loneliness, the agony. Solely motivated by the love for his late wife and the promise he made to her.
I think to understand what a 10kg jump is, at this level, in his position, on that platform, is impossible.
he cheated, it was four arms lifting that
18:11, 23:52, 30:45, 1:02:05, 1:06:00, 1:12:26, 1:14:47
18:50, 19:15, 25:07, 28:25, 58:30, 1:11:25
1:08:37, 1:10:45
The way he honored his late wife during the medal ceremony was so touching ❤
1:31:00 Who ever said this isn't a team sport - the whole team won gold that day. Such a great Olympic moment.
I Saw him in a TikTok video and spent the whole day watching all videos about him. Very inspiring and my eyes got teared up every time I replayed the last lift🎉
1:25:00 "I don't know, can we all fit up there?"
this should be made it in to a movie
Steiner moments after third lift in clean and jerk. 😢
1:13:30 That's the beauty of weightlifting, you never know. Loved his reaction to greatness, I would have done the same if I were him and just lost the gold to the superhuman performance.
Yeah 100% great sportsmanship!
I love them all, such a great entertainment, they had worked so hard to come this far to bring their people pride and happiness. I also love their physical and emotional expressions. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Here after Nijigasaki High School Idol Club finished the second season. Rewatching 2008 Beijing Olympics. Anyone??
Never thought I’d cry watching one lift
460KG of Hard work and 1 KG of Love = Mat Steiner. Hard work can take you to equalizer but its love that can make you surpass towards gold.
Matthias Steiner is inspiration........
I like the way he celebrated, yessss....
Very inspiring video
Chigichev was unfortunate really he was in a grey area 15/20kg to big for 105kg and at least 10kg to light for 105+kg still 460kg at 124kg is amazing steiner just had a helping hand that day no doubt
Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed was how light the Russian was relative to the field. Unreal that he came within 1 miracle lift of gold
Every emotional story

The greatest competition at Beijing! Absolutely amazing!
This is the only full replay of weightlifting at the 2008 Olympics. I don't think we'll see the other weight classes in full cause some of the athletes have been stripped of their medals.

1:27:46 that has to be his father slapping him like that lol
😆😆😆😆why did he do that😆😆😆😭😭😆😆
You can tell how the coach was apparently reluctant to go out on stage and how very, very urgently Steiner wanted him to bring the photo to him.
1:20:46 He tells his opponent the meaning of the photo, his wife died a year ago in a car accident.

People talk about what lasha lifts chigichev is 124kg lasha in Tokyo weighed 173kg massive difference
You can never play safe cause you'll never know the potential of your opponent in Olympics. I bet the Russian is capable of lifting heavier than 250.
That was his PB, he wasn't playing it safe at all. His 247 "should" have been enough to win the gold, let alone setting a new PB to increase the gap even further. Imagine it would have been way harder to take if he went for heavier, dropped it and then lost to a smaller weight. On this occasion he just lost to something extraordinary 🙂
It's not just about lifting heavy weights but mind game as well.
250 kg is the olympic record in that time
Why did Scerbathis take 257? All he needed at that point to beat Chigeshev was 255. It might be a moot point anyway cause Steiner was on fire and probably would have done 259 as readily as he did 258. Lithuanian coaches also had the mixup with the 244 time out failure I believe.
He said in an interview later it felt like there were 4 hands in the bar
Wow!
