  • Since its discovery in 1928, penicillin and penicillin-related antibiotics helped save countless lives from bacterial infections. However, in the face of overuse and misuse of antibiotics, bacteria evolved resistance mechanisms that allow them to proliferate even in the presence of the newest antibiotics. Watch this video to learn how penicillin and penicillin-related antibiotics disrupt the bacterial life cycle, and what molecular mechanisms bacteria employ to evade the action of these drugs.

I hope we can learn to use bacteriophage therapy more. It's targeted to a specific bacterium, and leaves the rest of the microbiome.
I wonder if then we could cycle antibiotics in and out of use to retain their novelty.
I wonder if antibiotics affect mitochondria.

Please make sure to make it clear that "bacteria does NOT develop resistance in order to fight antibiotics" as implied in the video. Mutations are random, not driven by the organism's need! The mutation "pops" up which provides positive selection when the bacterium is in an environment with antibiotic present. This bacterium survives and reproduces.

Alexander Fleming was not a pioneer and he did not invent penicilin. It was a Nicaraguan named Clodomiro Picado Twight.
    * 1923 Clodomiro "Clorito" Picado published a paper titled "Sobre la acción fitopatógena de los hongos a distancia" where he discovered penicilin effects on plants.
    * 1927 He published the paper "vacuna curativa no específica" described clinical data on how penicilin helped people with several infectious diseases.
    * 1929 Alexander Fleming published a paper on British Journal of Experimental Pathology on Penicilin.
