For Damian to be the reason she realizes this was even more perfect. Not only because of their history, but their obvious contrast in class and personality. Simply becoming friends, then boyfriend and girlfriend wouldn't have made a difference, because Anya would've been rejected by Damian's family for her upbringing (as shown). Why would Desmond take the time to get to know the family she's associated with. Plan B was doomed from the start. On top of that she actually has feelings for Damian, and now she thinks she has to abandon them. What a heartbreaking moment.
