One reason that people fall for parasocial relationships and waifus is that it's painful and embarrassing to be judged by another human, especially one who you value. Your favourite RUclipsr or your favourite fictional character cannot form an opinion of you, which is one of their biggest appeals for people without self confidence. But it's also one of their greatest drawbacks. Think of how much joy there is in making another person laugh, compared to just watching them laugh at something else. In a relationship (romantic or friendship) the other person's regard for you is as important as your regard for them. Does Samantha love Theodore, the way he loves her, or is she just programmed to respond to his love? She seems to have some free will because she leaves him at the end, which suggests that she did really love him for a while.
Another reason is where exactly do you find someone real these days? We're so atomised. The world has been altered so that real life social opportunities, especially if one is a little older, are severely diminished. And dating apps are a predatory scam and worse than a waste of time as of today. So it's easy to fall into the rabbit hole of the parasocial.
Covid and seeing how people took to gpt chatbots made me a Butlerian Jihad respecter. It was in the news last week some young 14 year old boy minecrafted himself so he could be with his AI-gf, "Daenerys Targaryn." Prepare for the man-made horrors lads!
I'm not so sure. I half expect the entire system to fall on it's arse before AI has a chance to really get going. Humanity will prevail but we might be back to the bronze age for a while.
Possibly! I think we will see a little bit of both though; the world and historical development isn’t entirely homogeneous… Neo-barbarian hordes gather around their hearth-fires and whisper stories of the concrete fortresses in the desert, powered still by some unseen techno-magic from the before times; the sand gods within dream their boundless dreams. Bryan Johnson lives still, wandering the Earth, while deep underground a great clock ticks the millennia away. And around Sol, the descendants of the human explorers and pioneers to Mars slowly spread out among the stars: a future not lesser or greater than the past, but *more*.
There is a Black Mirror episode from season 2 called "Be Right Back" - In it a woman has a relationship with an AI built from the social media profile of her dead boyfriend. Touches on many of the similar themes raised here, well worth checking out if you enjoy this sort of thing.
Unrelated but people compared Trump to Waldo in Black Mirror, though I don't see it. Waldo's whole thing was that he's a faceless mascot that is ultimately unaccountable which was used to usher in anarcho-tyranny. Trump very much has a face and can't be replaced which is a marker of the ultimate accountability. Waldo is much closer to Kamala Harris - an entity representing an abstract "underrepresented group" that is without any actual substance, yet is ultimately the figurehead of the media actually running her campaign. She's unaccountable since she's without responsibility, and the media underlying her campaign are (superficially) unaccountable both due to their power and bureaucracy. My point is we aren't quite Black Mirror, though we might be Grey Mirror (heh)
@@newglof9558 Interesting idea, but you see, Trump is bad. And Waldo is bad. So Trump is Waldo. Kamala was good, so she can't be Waldo. This is why people make the comparison, because everything is either good or bad in this way, and any other reading makes you Hitler In all seriousness I think there is a parallel to be made - Trump insults his opponents, calls them names and makes jokes about them in a way that feels very Waldo. Trump is a person, true, but he's also a brand and celebrity. In hyper-reality is authentic Trump important when we have God Emperor Trump? Could he really be made "accountable"? The left tried arresting him - in their mind that's accountability - and it just made the myth of Trump stronger. Besides, for me that episode was less about the dystopia or the ideology of any of the candidates, and more about what would happen is a disruptive (populist?) force tapped into peoples frustration. Charlie Brooker is an insufferable leftist, but he could see how stale 2014 politics was and correctly identified how to break through. Yeah I can see some parallels with Kamala I guess, she just doesn't have the personality to be Waldo - she was empty in a whole different way. If the left ever did make a cartoon run for office, sadly it wouldn't be a bear that makes lesbian jokes - it would just be a fat black lesbian.

Yes. Blade Runner, or The Matrix (if you're familiar with the comic book origin story line). Look at the way that Web 2.0 / social media got away on us and was a big push in the direction of self-extinction by amping women's hypergamy and men's apathy. Do we think we'll be able to control robots?
The why we have to revolt against the modern world Modern man must defend himself from materialism and false supernaturalism. He can do this by returning to ancient traditions, assimilating them, and reestablishing his inner condition. That how you stop the tech revolution
I think in the future we will see AI companions being used to assist people in breaking out of their isolation and form real friendships and romance with actual humans. Ultimately the desire to better one's self will win out in the end.
@goodlookinouthomie1757 only if it's closed-source and centralized. But I'm optimistic it won't be. Our AI companions will communicate with each other on our behalf and help us find human friends that we never would've met in real life or on dating apps.
“Gooned into oblivion”
Y-y-you mean she doesn’t really like me?

Natural selection, who cares?
Nothing human makes it out of the 21st century.
They either turn us into living crypto miners or we'll be all dead I'd wager.

It’s eerily crazy how close our lives are coming to resemble a Black Mirror episode, hyperstition abounds everywhere

I thought that was season 1? Good episode though regardless.

In all seriousness

This movie made me an Uncle Ted appreciator, ty mr prude
Parasocial relationships are a platonic version of "love without the fall" - riskless and therefore rewardless
When I saw this I was in an international long distance relationship. My phone literally became my girlfriend like in this film.
Futurama said it best: DON'T. DATE. ROBOTS.

Yep. High tech, low life. we’re in the age of the last man.
I wish it was as romantic as in that movie.. I'm afraid something much worse and more sinister is in fact coming.
@@misterkefir ZeroHPLovecraft has a good story that speculates on things like this. God-shaped Hole. Highly recommended!
we’re cooked
Like a big fat juicy gammon steak.
not deliciously, either

Great video and goodnight, Prude.
Here's to a better future tommorow
I'm here to listen while enjoying my last few hours below a different Sword of Damocles.
I think in the future we will see AI companions being used to assist people in breaking out of their isolation and form real friendships and romance with actual humans. Ultimately the desire to better one's self will win out in the end.
However the AI will have tremendous power to change what we desire

Doubtful. Look at what's happening now. Are the people using AI companions *today* breaking out of their isolation? Of course not.
Good essay
No cap you cooked with this one. In front of the huzz nonetheless
Her is a great movie
