It’s speculated that when the Pilgrims came to the Americas, they smelled really bad. Because natives bathed regularly in their rivers and streams, the natives were disgusted by their stench so they would light incense and try everything to block out their smells when the pilgrims were near. The pilgrims thought that it was normal for them to do that, but it really wasn’t...
"Ah, those barbarians in their leggings. So very backwards and uncouth." *A frigid northern breeze sweeps up into the Roman's skirt.* "Although on second thought..."
The long leggings were seen as feminine, because obviously to them the cold was not an issue... As there was no cold. Furthermore it was indeed a mark of being foreign, a barbarian because only the northern tribes wore these. They had also held the belief that nobody could live North of Germany as it would be too cold. Turned out there were people living there. And in fact this is where the Germanic tribes had come from. I think the only reason they had to change their mind is out of necessity, being stationed in Northern Gaul and Southern Britain.
I actually found this interesting because I genuinely always wondered about it. With so many historical period drama's on TV out there I always wonder what they did when I came to costumes and scenes that involved the actor being in historical underwear. Like they would need to be as accurate as they can to the time period. and also without the accurate undergarments the main clothing and costumes wouldn't work because you would need to create a very specific silhouette. Also I just have an interest in historical clothing.
there are many channels that do historical costuming and dress that talk about all of this in detail. they talk about how the items were made and with materials etc. very interesting. since that's all their channels are about, they can pick apart different things more deeply than lindsay. i think you would enjoy them.
Women didn’t wear Corsets until the 1840s. They wore Stays during the late 17th and 18th Centuries and before that they wore “Pairs of Bodies” during the 16th and 17th Centuries. But before 1598 there is no record of women wearing stays or corsets only Kirtles with stiffens bodices.

Didn’t medieval women use sponges as tampons more often than actual absorption rags? Also happy late 919th birthday to Matilda! Her birthday was February 7. I do not know my birthday. ;( (Also to the person who invented bras, WHY.)
Your year of birth is most likely around 1122, but the exact date is unknown. But, your anniversary of annulling your marriage with Louis and your stopping of being the Queen consort of France is coming up, March 21.
Ruth Goodman also combed her hair daily, during the filming of "Tudor Monastery Farm", because she could wash it (to be historically accurate); as long as she could remove dead skin, her hair was fine. :)
You are correct. It is on record that he released an unholy stench and towards the end of his life people would have to flee the room to gag and vomit.
Where I live, near Dublin, one of our claims to fames is that there used to be a factory here that made underwear for Queen Victoria. They also made a type of long johns that John Wayne referenced in his movies, balbriggans.
Love scratching my curiosity itch. Just yesterday I ask a co-worker, "Ever wonder where underwear came from, and who was the first to wear it? Today, I found this video. Thank you for the upload. I really enjoy random history.
Omggg the chastity belts are disgusting!!! That tiny spiked hole for poop to pass through!!! I can only imagine it getting stuck on those spikes and a poor woman literally chained to it not able to remove it!! The infections both skin and vaginally that must’ve caused. That’s SO WRONG.
In the 1960s we wore divided half slips called "pettipants." These were the silky nylon fabric. These appeared again in the 1980s as "city shorts." Very handy worn under a long tunic with tights that became the latest silhouette.

I have to wonder which was the healthiest though in terms of fabric and design. We are learning more and more that cotton is best for breathability, and while silk feels nice, it's bad at moisture-wicking and can cause infections due to moisture and bacteria retention.
4.08, he's bonny! In the 1940's/50's women used to wear what was called in my town 'freetraders' slang for gusset less knickers. PS I've just become a patron!
Wide skirts made it easier for women to pee. I read of two women standing on a lawn chanting then walking away after passing their water. They would do this in the corridors of large houses. They could also lift the hoops and sit on a toilet seats holding the fabric out of the way. Other times a cup like a gravy boat could be passed through the layered clothing.
Now I'll be singing Thong Song all day lol 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 still wonder where did the name drawers come from? I was taught that it was a rather uncouth to call them such things.

I don’t think she did....but she does have videos on birth control. In a further down comment, Lindsay Holiday says she’s doing a video on menstruation in March, for International Women’s Day.
I have a question about how male underwear worked around men peeing. I know that sounds silly but if you have your socks tied into your underwear it is inconvenient at best for men to use the facilities. Would there have been some sort of fly for men like an overlapping front panel or something else that worked. I know this video is an older one but you have put in the research in period clothing and sewing techniques and might have thought of this issue before.

I loved history class - it was like story time.
And you would be disappointed because it’s nothing like Lindsay does it, it’s very, very tedious
Same probably.
