+1guitbox1 After quite a few years I realized that the Metheny tunes I liked best were at LEAST as much Lyle's work as Pat's. A little bit more recently, I have started to think that actually I like Lyle's parts even more than I like Metheny's parts. That's not saying anything bad at all about Pat, but the center of what Lyle plays is closer to my own central tastes than where Pat is centered.
@61guitbox I totally agree. Imagine two dancers, each one capturing every nuance of Lyle and Bill’s performance and tone here. The two together add up to something even more profound as they create beauty in the space between and around them.
The collaboration of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, and arguably the rest of the group was so much more than a gathering of talent. It was a collection of complementary personality types: Selfless, expressive, imaginative, extraordinarily skilled, and so many other things. They were a team who seemed to think more of the beauty and power of music than of individual acclaim. Combinations like this do not often happen. They have both brought me countless hours of listening in the best of times.
I bought a copy of this CD when it came out... I can just see and feel the hot August air (in a field with tall golden grass and a few trees.. and the grasshoppers)... Aptly titled..👍.. Love Bill Frisel and Mark Johnson's work with Lyle Mays..❤️
The screen says 1998 but it was 1989 this piece came out. I think it is one of the most trance inducing songs I know. Beautiful, delicate, surreal. It conjures up so many memories for me as I play it like a mantra over and over some days in August...and here we are again. August 1st. Thank you Lyle for that.
I know just what you mean, how this song paints a vivid emotion of a dreamy August day. I bought this album when I was a college student in 1989, and it still reminds me of those times, of August days I play again and again.
We're all losing out without Lyle. Come on, man - a software engineer?!? Really? I mean, listen to this song - texture, mood, emotion, incredible stuff you don't hear from musicians anymore. Get back into the game, Lyle, and leave a besieged world your gift of great music.
At least the world has a software engineer who isn't a clueless uncool geek. If I saw some ware coded by him, I'd buy it no matter what it did. Besides, have you heard some of the music he does that involves shit-tons of software? It's cool af.
I don´t know why, but this beautiful piece follows me where ever i go. It reminds me of when i leaved in US back in 97, every time i listen to it for some reason i fell like i am there again. Lyle Mays master of beautiful music and thoughtful moments. Its sad to know that there will never be another LYLE, but i thank God for this guy´s life Great music Brings me joys and wonderful memories. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS.
His deep friendship/brotherhood with Pat and gratitude towards him and humbleness perhaps prevented him to build an amazing solo career and created this masterpiece as an elegant validation of his enormous talent and potential as an individual…. Long live LM!
I brought this CD when it came out in 1988. (I think) I never knew what a gem I had in my hands. And the cool part, it does not sound like Pat. He needed to show his own separate identity.
RIP Lyle Mays your beautiful music changed my life🙏❤❤
Thanks for the beauty Lyle. R.I.P
RIP LYLE. 1953-2020
As much as I like Pat Metheny and believe me I do , Lyle Mays and Bill Frissel together are as good as it gets !

..then you've got excellent taste, indeed!!

Lyle Mays tells stories with his amazing music! I have been to worlds and back riding on his music. Doesn't get any better.
Totally Agree! Each Listen Equates to a New Musical Journey
this is one of the greatest songs ever written
What beautiful pictures he paints. Memories of childhood and late summer come flooding back.
Both Lyle and Pat, Masters of the masterpiece.

BEAUTIFUL; "August" - what a perfect title for this one. Bill Frisell's guitar work is excellent throughout Lyle Mays' 1988 album "Street Dreams".
Respect, Mr. Mays. You were one of a kind.
Thanks for the wonderfull music you give us , RIP Lyle

I never tire listening to his musical genius...a 'granite marker' in keyboard supremacy!!
Remarkable illusions appear in his music, like paintings. Thank You for posting such beauty.
Beautiful ... possibly chose this song listen to my ears the last day of my life .....
This and First Circle
that’s deep Ricard Soto...upon reflection this piece of superb music would be quite appropriate for my last day on this planet as well 🙏🏻🌎...

Fantastico artista. Grande Lyle.

Where did you read that? I thought he was an architect
Agree!!!!
If Lyle ever does it again, he will do it on his terms.
Too late......but still have his musical legacy....RIP, dear Lyle......

Estoy de acuerdo con sus hermosas palabras! También me encanta la música de Lyle ...

I always give this a listen in the August time frame. Thanks
Wow, listening to this with "good" headphones changes EVERYTHING. Rather than the car stereo.
I like this music

Soo beautifull
so great MAN ! RIP BRO
Thanks for posting! My favourite track on this album. Great live version available on RUclips too.
Thanks for posting! I feel same feelings as other people described before me. Hard to find words to describe it!
Warm, languid, somnolent, lush, ripe, deliciously relaxed; did I miss anything?
sublime and slight melancholy
Entrancing, hypnotic, just sucks you in to another stratosphere.
Extraterrestrial?
Nope, these are earthlings just like us, only better at playing music.
Lyle ! just Lyle !
stupenda musica.........................
Happy birthday, dear Lyle!
Great tune!!!
Came to Lyle through Pat, Came to Pat through my ex Wife, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad😉. RIP Lyle Mays
Joyrney to the Paradise. ❤
un super tema de un excelente disco
thank you💜
Thank you , great sound ! one of my favorite May's song . Oh ! i've don't seen : May ( Lyle ) play " August " ...
Nailed it.
3:40 love this part, just like this 0:40
happiness
R.i.p.
Oh ya!!!
1988...
1:28 great way to start a solo, just one long straight note.
ops :) grazie !
Great stuff, but did Lyle lift the lovely phrase from Keith Jarrett?
A modern day Mozart
SORRY! 1988, I'll change soon :)
LOL, still there
1989, not 1998
1988/89 :)
6 people didn't belong here in the first place. Smh...
Don't beat yourself up. Those six people are to be pitied for not knowing what first place should even be.
