Edgar Cayce used to do this before he died - he connected with the "akashic record", which is not a term I use very much because I am not into new age ideas very much. There are not many people out there who can do it for real now, and as Jewel said, there are a lot of frauds (true in the field of astrology as well!). Cayce's books are fascinating though!
In astrology, Saturn and the Nodes are really to the key to getting a flavor for whether there is something past in the situation. The 12th house can give insight as well, especially when it is tenanted by a few planets. Conjunctions are the most powerful aspects, and when we see a few of them between personal planets in one chart and Saturn and the Nodes of the Moon in another chart, this is an indication that the people may have interacted in some past life.
Jewel is correct that gleaning much more is difficult (though Judith Hill - my teacher and a master astrologer - gets some hits on this subject but does not give that info to clients because it is not appropriate - she merely tells me in my lessons with her as part of my instruction). Also, Jewel is correct that there is little to gain from understanding our past karmas unless a realized spiritual master (like Amma) is the conduit through which you receive the information for the purpose of learning an important lesson and continuing to evolve on the path to freedom from the wheel of Samsara.
Better to focus on dharma than karma. And in the natal chart, that is far more easily ascertainable. This is a forward looking approach and karma looks backward.
Live a right lifestyle, be kind, compassionate and caring towards others, breed love not hate, have a settled spiritual practice, and many difficult karmas can be worked out in less stressful ways. The Gita is a wonderful doorway into one spiritual path that can help a person grwo closer to reuniting with GOd (find Paramahansa Yogandas' translation for a real treat). The Srimad Bhagavatam is another excellent text, also involving Krishna, though finding good english translations is tough.

Interesting subject. A lot of people plain just don't understand what karma means in the first place. They don't realize that the principle of karma was first introduced in the Vedic era. Vedic in today's world is translated as Hindu. There is a famous text called Bhagavad Gita, wherein Krsna (according to Vedic thought is God), he addresses Arjuna on the subject of Karma and past lives at length. Regarding past lives he explained that it's not possible for any conditioned living being to recall their past lives, and to try and do so is useless mental speculation. This doesn't sit well with many new agers as they're adamant they were Kings and Queens in their past lives, and certainly not shrubs,or insects lol.
I think I agree with the Vedic thought on this subject, afterall the same people that claim to be able to know what their past lives were, aren't able to tell you what they had for dinner on a given day only a few months ago.
Another interesting subject is soul mates, everyone wants to believe that their current partnership is with a soul mate, yet they don't even know what the soul is, how it transmigrate through variious bodies after death etc. etc.

Everyone believe or like to believe what resonates with who they are. The same with yourself, your belief in Vedic philosophy is likely a result of your rearing, experiences and personality. It's various teachers, and philosophies in this world and no one can truly say or determine what is wrong or right, least of all you. I believe allowing people that are likely drugged out, hippie, outcast people who can't function in society to be the embodiment of new age spirituality is problematic. Even those who believe or follow esoteric astrology don't feel or believe everyone was Kings and Queens, it's only certain placements that indicate that. I don't dismiss people remembering, understanding or feeling aspects of their past lives. Some philosophies feel that nonlinear time is either connected or alternatively occurring at the same. Maybe it hasn't been your experience remembering past lives, or maybe a lack of belief in it is enough to not be open to. Either way, it goes, no one can say for sure.

I'm sorry, I understand what your saying in relation to going to certain individuals to seek out this information! But what really irritates me is that some of us really want to work this out for ourselves and it feels that there isn't anyone to teach us how to do so. I am currently experiencing a karmic relationship! I'm a gemini sun and he's a aries sun! my north node is in aries and his is in Gemini! My south node is conjuct his pluto and saturn in the 7th House! And his south node is conjuct my saturn and uranus in the 6th! I can feel that I am close to getting the information that I need and I am more than willing to continue to seek! But what would be really helpful is if you could make a video about how to discover past life karma for yourself, as an individual!
Daniella Henningham This to me isn’t what karmic means. Karmic doesn’t mean compatible. Karmic means they come back to relearn a lesson that was not learned. Karmic isn’t positive or about soulmates. Its about what comes around, goes around. Sadly.
Could the same be said of families we are born into also? Like maybe even being born is not about karma with a family member but a fact that we need a vessel to come through.

Jewel are you saying that evolutionary astrology isn't all it's cracked up to be? I'll certainly bear it in mind! I saw a course online, which claims to have 50 hours of dvd lectures on the subject with an exam - it was pretty pricey too. I thought Good Lord! How would anyone be able to remember that much information and I have no idea whether my level of acumen as an astrology student would be up to the level (I assume) one would need to do this course! It's frustrating there's so little info on the net too and I would like to study the subject a bit. From the tiny amount of info I've gleaned on evolutionary/karmic astrology, it does fit with my own past life regressions to be fair (south node in Scorpio conjunct Neptune - I was naval personnel in WW2 and died at sea!)
