  • Join me for the first part of my Superior Hiking Trail Northbound (NOBO) thru hike!! This video is part one of a series and covers days 1-3, which is the section of trail through Duluth, the Southern Terminus to Martin Road Trailhead. I will be hiking solo, so it’ll be an adventure!
In the video, I cover what to expect from the Superior Hiking Trail, daily mileage, and the excitement of beginning a thru hike. I mix hiking vlogs with cinematic nature videography. Challenges include heat, bugs, allergies, soreness, and tiredness, but I’ll celebrate with a local craft beer in the end!

Hi, I’m Maddie! Celebrating an outdoor adventure with a beer has been a long-time tradition for me, and I wanted to create a platform for like-minded folks to come together. In my videos, I cover all types of adventures and review beer! Topics include day hiking, kayaking, travel, thru-hiking, and life on the road. You might consider a fall hike of the SHT. The nights are very cold beginning in late September, but there are no bugs or humidity, and the fall colors are amazing.

Hi Ms. Maddie. Hope all is well. I'm the biggest wuss in the world when talking about camping or hiking, but after watching you, I have had a come to Jesus meeting with the voices in my head, and concluded that you have inspired me to grow a pair and adventure in a hiking and camping. Thank you young lady, you are awesome. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay awesome.

That’s so great to here! I think nature is where we are meant to be, and I think science and a person’s need for adventure backs me up on that. I’m so glad to have help you want to venture out more, I think you’ll really benefit from it. Thank you for watching and all your support! Take care, Pops Pops! (Unless you want me to call you something different!)

@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces hi Ms. Maddie. Pops or Pops Pops, either way is fine, or Ibuprofen and Ice, or whatever else is fine as well. Thanks.

Nice improvising! I can't believe you found that many 4 leaf clovers. I only found one or two as a kid, but that was in California. You probably should wear a wide brimmed hat for sun protection and a mosquito head net when those pesky skeeters get bad. Thanks for taking us along!

The water is often yellowish orange up here because of the tannins from the hemlock bogs. You won't often find clear water in Northern Wisconsin or MN.

The heat and figuring out logistics was a pain, but these first days, I was so stoked to be there, I could’ve taken on anything!

Dang! 21 miles your first day! Awesome. The snake you saw was likely a garter snake, totally harmless. Only rattlesnakes in Minnesota are in the far southwest. Your mileage the next day was fine. You might want to consider a wide brim hat and bug net when you get to an outfitter. Also, for your hip and shoulder pain, looks like your pack is too far off your back. Can you tighten the load lifters? Maybe an outfitter can help you there too. Planning a fall week long hike so watching with interest to help me decide where I want to go. Hike your own hike and enjoy! And I think that finding that many four leafed clovers makes you not only magical, but also a leprechaun! 🍀

My aunt, who’s from Minnesota, said the same thing about the garter snake and rattlesnakes living in the southwest!
I think the reason my second day milage disappointed me was because I really impressed myself with the 20 miles the first day, and I was hoping it would be an everyday thing, not a one-time thing. But I eventually did 15-20 miles a day so it was all good in the end!
I do actually have a wide brim hat and bug net, I just didn’t want to put them on because it makes me so much hotter! Not very responsible, I know, but in the moment, it was worth it!
As far as the load lifters, I did get them at the perfect 45 degree angle before I set out, and was able to look in a mirror, so I didn’t want to mess with them too much. I did try pulling them just a little tighter, and as the pack got closer to my upper back, it got further away from my lower back, and the weight was all off. But the good news is that happened on my last thru hike too and it goes away eventually!
That’s so exciting that you’re going in the fall! I hear that’s the best time of year! Split Rock Canyon was definitely my favorite part of this section!

Oh nice! I saw a moose track up north and heard coyotes just outside of Duluth, and saw a porcupine and the kind of small snake in this video. No encounters with anything dangerous though!
