Would you have believed a decade ago that you'd go from living in your parents ground floor to living in and owning business in Africa and moving city to city??? Life can change dramatically for you and your whole family when you take big brave steps.
I made a decision and will be graduating this year from a top university that I never dreamed I would get into. But I had to do something different as I was stuck in a vicious cycle and stagnant.
If you're not happy with where your life is, take action and change it. You'd be surprised where life can take you.

Hi Rochelle, I ve got a newly built house at The Estate Oganbo road. This is our property and I can assure you, it’s something you would love….We live in Australia and just finished building. L kindly let me know if interested.
A big issue in Nigeria and West Africa generally is there is often a lack of standardization in housing - that's why historically almost everybody built their own. Because if you rent, you're going to be subject to another person's aesthetics which includes where they randomly decide to cut corners. In that showcase house, it is clear that by the time the owner got to the bathroom they lost all interest. To get contemporary finishes reflecting universal standards, you'll have to pay more in a new estate. Also renters in Nigeria legit change finishing... like you can remove that whole tile and replace it to what you want (relatively inexpensively) and the landlord would have no issue.

The tile work is sloppy and grouting basically nonexistent maybe just concrete and uneven
There are many gated estates in Lekki with all amenities inclusive eg water, 24 hrs electricity, waste management, security, playgrounds for the kids, gyms etc, shopping centre etc- you pay service charge yearly for all these tho. Get a reputable agent who will show you some of these places....you will live very comfortably in such places and not have to bother about utility issues

Hi Rochelle, glad you're on this journey. Just one comment/suggestion maybe don't say 'In Africa/I feel in Africa"... you've only experienced 2 countries the 53 are all different and unique, depending on the region culture etc. it is not a one size fits all..
Just a little tip, those houses are not gone, base on what you filled on the forms, you where not seen as a potential occupant. The form is a screening tool. Good luck in your search and that's Nigeria for you.

For your own power, get a solar panel and inverter. Its just what it is and Nigerians have been used to this and people have been thriving. With an inverter, you have constant power till the power from the main grid comes up.
Lets not act like the over 220 million people in Nigeria including millons of foreigners are all dead. We all get to a new environment, and see what obtains there and make adjustments to keep going. Its all choice, some communities offerr 24hrs uninterrupted electricity as well. There are other cities with more constant power, up to 20hrs per day. Don't act like you are in the US or the developed world. Even GH and SA have daily power cuts nowadays.

These steep-stair homes and area are not giving what needs to be gave… but you will find the the right place for you and the family soon❤
The truth is that everybody is building in Lekki and poorly. She should look at some old area like Ikoyi. There are some cool vertical apartments where she can get something better at the same price despite not a gated community but usually have fences..
I looked at townhomes with similar layouts and steep stairs here in NJ and NY and passed bc thinking of going down such steep steps with a child gave me anxiety. Either a big open layout apt or a true house.
Also, if one is buying, I understand and encourage investing in a neighborhood still being built, for return on investment. But if you are renting (and not at a cheap price), why not live in an already completed area so you can enjoy the area too?
I had the SAME EXACT experience with the tiles. I even moved out of a place that I rented for that reason. I came to the conclusion that these landlords are either lying or their workers have been occupying and using the bathrooms while the apartments are vacant.

The Tiles are yet to be given "The Final Finishes" this is because they want to do ALL other finishes on the Ceilings and Walls e.t.c in order to reduce the cost cleaning.

I'm from Michigan and at least once or twice a year we have power outages that last maybe an hour or two at the most. I couldn't imagine dealing with that every single day or even weekly! That's just a different type of living! Some of those places look like fixer uppers. Maybe they used cheap materials that's why they looked lived in or used.
That's a lot to take in and deal with, the least of my concern would be the bathtub. Thanks for taking us along your journey ❤

@@karine-ela but its way way better than The So Called Self proclaim "Giant of Africa." Also In Ghana Electricity goes off mostly in Big cities...the small towns and villages have their electricity always on because they dont consume a lot so they dont touch their electricity
Of course you cant live in Michigan without an electricity for a day because you gonna freeze your Ass off. Whereas in Africa you dont need electricity 24hrs 360 days to live life because you can still cook, shower, sleep and do a lot without electricity

The thing is, if you want to skimp in Nigeria then you won’t enjoy it. You need money to enjoy Nigeria. Even for general safety you need money. Rochelle I suggest y’all increase y’all budget because the houses y’all were looking at are all very ugly. For safety you need to try and find a gated community. You have kids, so please take extra precautions.
17:16 yes i see it. I'm wondering if because it's so warm there that it just grows mold when nobody lives in it. Because in Miami, Florida where I'm from we get little molds spots in certain areas of the house if it's not constantly cleaned and dehumidified.
No, moulds are indoors despite Lagos being swampy. It is hot sunshine most of he year. The reason that floor looks like it is having moulds is because it has not been thoroughly cleaned and the tiles poorly done with cavities. Probably the cements are still left there after completing building the house. You basically have to clean those cavities.

Hi, new subscriber here, I will advise working with more than one agent for more options, there are more beautiful and way less houses on the island to rent for sure. Get a place in a serviced estate, for better security and 24 hrs electricity etc, and of course some of them come with a pool , if possible a new built, and unfurnished. Unfurnished usually come with a fitted kitchen, and closets so u can furnish the rest yourself it way cheaper n better to get unfurnished than furnished with ridiculous rent.
The houses you showed in my opinion are definitely not worth the price, go further into Lekki if you must like chevron or even Abraham Adesanya, you will get newer, beautiful and cheaper houses with nice finishing, get a trusted person who lives in Lekki or even Nigeria to come with you when viewing also if you see one you like, ask questions from the residents in the estates before making a deposit. If you take your time and make tiny compromise you will definitely get what you want, Good luck my love.

One advice: Don't take prices at face value.
Sometimes, agents (let's say Agent B) take advertising work from other agents (let's say Agent A) and act merely as introducers. They might increase the rental/sale price by a little amount. This is why you can go to some property websites and see the same apartment advertised for different prices.
Agent A (the original agent) advertised it for N13m. Which was the intended price by the landlord.
Agent B (the introducer) advertised it for N14m. Which is a N1m add-on that they would gladly take if you can afford it.
Considering you are paying percentages as legal and agent fees, they are also milking extras in that.
So, do negotiate the price as much as possible. NEVER show you are desperate or don't have alternative options.

This is the problem we are facing with realter in Nigeria. Buildings are poorly done, constructed and overpriced. When you complain people will start insulting you for calling out the flaws.

For the rentals you have shown .. what are the purchasing prices for these units?...for the rentals, that's pretty cheap compared to Canada.. it would be doubled and smaller
I’m stressed out just hearing about all the things you have to take in consideration. Wow it’s a lot. And I have a toddler and those stairs in most of those places gave anxiety. But it’s fun to see what different countries have to offer. My coward ass is staying put in Canada. Even tho dem yearly prices is like 4 months mortgage payment 😩 over here.

1 year in advance is not like that in Africa in general. It select countries. Kenya and South Africa, for example, are monthly.
Also, none of these properties were nice (except for the show house). Even know Nigerians in the comments are claiming Ghanaians are always negative towards them (untrue), I know my Naija peeps go hard, and these properties are not representative of that, especially on THE islands.

One thing you need to understand in Nigeria is that most of this houses are new and mostly rented by Nigerians and we are use to being treated this way.they don’t clean the houses very well after building to make it more appealing to potential client.you have to do the cleaning by yourself

What i love about Nigerian homes compared to Ghanaian ones is that they typically have better finishings. They dont use the tacky doors, tiles, or lighting. etc. that Ghanaian homes typically have. You definitely get value for money as compared to Ghana.

I know you intend to move to Nigeria at all costs, but considering how these apts are taken whenever you fill out the forms raises much concern. As you did state earlier, if these apts are taken, why do they give you forms to fill? Please take your time to do more diligent work before making the move.
We have Whites, Chinese & Indians living & doing Business in Nigeria 🇳🇬 I’m sure Rochelle will be just fine…
The properties are still on the market when you're given a form to fill, however, the properties are on a first come first serve basis and there are so many people looking for homes to rent. So you can fill out the form but an hour later someone who has their money ready will pay and take the property. That's how it goes.

Population increase & infrastructure built during colonial times cannot accommodate or keep up with the population. Part of the problem is most Governments have the capacity to fix the issue but because of corruption & greediness they would rather not make changes that benefit the population.

They use the proceeds from the first tenant to finish the remaining parts of the houses. It's no big deal. Either you choose it or not. Building an estate is capital intensive so hence why they need the final payments to complete it
