One of the matches that never happend, but would have loved to see happen, was Nadal vs Davydenko in the French Open final 2005. Davy lost to Puerta in a close match, while Rafa beat Roger to reach his first GS final. Can you imagine that version of Rafa, who was a physical prowess, who chased every single ball like there was no tomorrow, who was hungry and willing, but still inexperienced in GS finals, against the russian wall Davydenko? His shotmaking taking the ball early, angles and depth always bothered Rafa, mostly on hard courts, but still he was damn competitive on clay as well. It would have been epic. My prediction for that match (I know it's pointless, but it's fun to speculate) is that Rafa would have won in 5 sets.

Davydenko's ability to hit the ball on the rise, à la Agassi, always gave Nadal a lot of troubles. However this is the only game they played on clay where Davydenko really pushed the king of clay to the very limit: his angles were nothing short of amazing! Unfortunately he never had the physical strength to outlast the greatest players like Federer or Nadal.

Davydenko had a game quite pleasing to the eye. A fusion of movement and acceleration with some geometry for good measure. What surprised me the most was how he used his body to put power into his shots, which required a lot of timing and concentration. His game did not look easy but it looked consistent. Nadal had the edge in many aspects and even though he did not play at top performance, he had the advantage in terms of easy power. I wouldn't say I like using the phrase easy power because it is not easy, but there is a certain ease by which Nadal accelerates through the ball that Davydenko did not have. At the end, this match popularity is based on how a point here and there made all the difference. Small margins created competition and both players had a certain dance: Davydenko with the QuickStep and Rafa with the PasoDoble!

Nadal really didn't mature on hard courts until 2008-2009 when he was about 22 years old.
Like how Federer's first hard court slam win was when he was 23 or 24.
Nadal was still young and already dominating clay, which shows the lack of competition at the time, considering Nadal's first slam win was when he was around 19.
We haven't seen a teenager win a slam since Nadal. That's how much more competitive it is at the top of the game now than it was 10+ years ago.
Federer had no competition on grass and hard, Nadal had no competition on clay.
