That tarp is pretty great, I got it for a about over a year now. I use it every other week as my main shelter, and once you got the weird tie-out placement on the side figured out, it's a fine tarp indeed. I think I understand what the "pinholes" that people are talking about are, but it's not the fabric tearing. As far as I can tell, it's just the black coating on the inside that stretches over the fabric with time letting light shine trough. Mine is full of those "pinholes" and no water comes trough, just a bit of light. After receiving negative feedback on the bag it came in, Decathlon now sells that tarp in a proper compression bag. Sadly they don't sell the bag alone, so yeah ... for early adopter we have to come with our own compression bag. They also now have a 4x4m green tarp that is pretty good too, with the blackout and a proper compression bag. As always, great video ! (And not that it matters that much but, Solognac is not a separate entity from Decathlon, it's just one of Decathlon's inner brand, like Quechua, Forclaz, Domyos etc... It's more a way to let the client know what kind of equipment they are buying than a proper different company. )
Thank you. I understood the relationship between Decathalon and the other manufactures but did not explain it clearly. I appreciate what you had to say about the pin holes as well. I will take a look at their larger tarp. It sounds interesting. Thanks for commenting
@@Bananeisafree Please, no need to apologize, I likely dd not say it clearly enough. BTW, I just checked Decathalon Canada and see they now have the compression sack as you mentioned; however, they are not carrying the larger tarp here yet. Thanks again
Decathlon has very good products. I have two of these and have been using them for over two years. I also have been using their wood stoves, knives, rucksacks, tents (5 of them), sleeping bags etc. they're one stop shop for everything outdoors since over 10 years.
Hey Mark, Perfect timing on this review. We were trying to decide on a new tarp, between this and the Aqua-quest, based on your review this is our winner at $60.00 cheaper. I also like the darkening fabric side. Thanks to your viewer who offered an explainer on the pin point holes. Thanks for filming and posting your views, I know the time it takes to do all that you do.
Take a look at the DD tarp too. I bought a 3x3m one from them. It’s going strong after 3 yrs, with a combined 2 1/2 months of use, and every fall I get the bad luck of a good 3 solid days of rain, and not a drop has gotten through. I am well sheltered though, so it’s never had to put up with much wind. So I can’t comment on that.
Clear gorilla tape has great holding power. I used it for a field repair on a seam that let go, 3 years later and multiple trips through the laundry it's still holding.
I love this tarp. 1 of my faves. I use this more then my DD tarp. The black underside is just perfect and after a few years it still perfect with no leaks
Opacity the perfect companion feature to camouflage. Even though I'm not usually trying to be stealthy I very much dislike the look of a conventional poly tarp glowing like a giant night light from the light of my campfire.
Meant to ask you what brand it was. You may have already said so but my old brain likely packed it away where I can't find it. Mushrooms help but only so far. Thanks for commenting Steve
I think the camo pattern is "Python". Varusteleka has a nice 290x290cm tarp made of similar materials, snow or woodland camo, near infrared compliant to defeat thermal image viewers, only $300 Canadian 😵.
Anything from those Nordic companies is super expensive. Even when they’re made in Asian countries! Take a look at DD tarps too. It’s not light weight either, but rock solid.
Thank Mark for letting us know where we can buy some of the great gear you review. Where is Decathlon in Halifax for people who occasionally get there?
That's a great looking camo. It's a bit of a shame the pattern repeat is so small. It looks like every 18" and the eye picks up on that pattern, which kind of make it more visable than a plain colour. Great looking tarp though. Thank you for sharing.
G'day Mark, been look'n for something better than a cheap poly tarp, but not so high end, to put in the vehicle. I dont leave the real pricey stuff in there permanently, for obvious reasons, but no point carry'n around rubbish either ........ I reckon this one fits the bill. Btw; I really like using paracord, though No. 36 bankline is a great alternative, for a "non-stretchy" guyline, amongst other things. You do sacrifice rated breaking strain, (I think 280-ish lbs from memory, as opposed to 550). buy hey, whatever it is, I've never broken the stuff ; ) There are some very good tapes out there, but gotta say Gorilla is the best I've tried. So many uses !!!!! .... I dont leave home with out it ; ) FYI; Decathlon has had a presence here in oz for several years now. When the nearest store first opened, I did a recon and cant say I was impressed at all, but in fairness they've lifted their game since. Now, at least on par, if not better than their "direct" competition. Cheers Duke.
Hi Duke. Welcome to summer. We just got a 35cm dump of snow with more to come. I carry a role of bankline with me and a small role of Gorilla tape all the time. As you say, super handy. Decathalon is still quite new to us here. What I have learned is that they have different levels of quality from entry to fairly high end in most of their gear. Allow me to find something to match my budget. Thanks for commenting and Merry Christmas
@@MarkYoungBushcraft A white Christmas for you folks, very nice mate, I sincerely hope you and yours enjoy it !!! Been to Decathalon in Montreal. From what I saw, they’re worse than a Walmart sports store. Great if you can’t afford it, and many of us can’t nowadays thanks to the liberals, but I got some serious reservations about the quality, and honestly Mark, I’m beginning to have some questions about your testing of some of this stuff. Setting up a tarp on a nice afternoon a few times isn’t the same as being miles into the bush, and spending days in the cold and rain. Did you even try and set it up in your yard or something for a couple days of bad weather? Anything other than an afternoon of filming?
Just a bit testy Jim. True, my gear may not get as much use as other give theirs but I don't feel that invalidates my opinions on it. I don't feel I misrepresent myself or how I use my gear
@ Honestly Mark, I like you, and obviously I generally like your channel. I look forward to youre videos, but before you say how good something like a shelter is, you should have put it through its paces for real. For example, I spend weeks at a time, alone, or with family, far from cell service hunting or just camping. Others maybe miles from their cars. So don’t you think something as important as shelter should really be tested at least a little in bad weather? I’ve watched tons of reviews of tents, and I’ve seen some pretty cool looking set ups fail horribly once they’re out in the field. I mean I guess if you’re doing an unboxing video, and you say you haven’t actually tested it, but it looks good that’s fine, but I’m just saying, unless you e had it out in bad weather, you can’t say it’s good or not. That store sells some horrible stuff. So I wouldn’t trust anything they sell without checking it first.
@@jimf1964 Jim, I have always appreciated your honesty and straight forwardness. I also appreciate your need for something more at times than my videos provide. I may not be able to give you what you want as my outdoor excursions and locations do not provide me the opportunity to torture test my gear. With the exception of two-weeks at Kouchibouquac each year, I am limited to day hikes with the future possibility of one or two night stay overs. I will likely speak to that in a Hike and a Coffee video early in the New Year to explain what I mean. As far as the volume of videos I am putting out right now, that has to do with having too many unreleased videos. Some of them go back to the spring of 2024 and I am trying to clear them out. A few won't make sense to release until next spring. Of interest and not whining, I am seeing less add revenue right now than I have in a number of years. Again, not whining but the investment in time making videos does not pay off in revenue from adds. I do not accept payment for making videos. I am not looking to get rich or try and make a living doin this, I am retired and it gives me reason to get out to the woods, not that it is necessary of course. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and look forward to your honest comments in the new year
@ No worries Mark. The only problem I have is reviewing gear that you haven’t tested, but in this case I feel you’re making a statement on its quality, without trying it, which isn’t good. You don’t need to take a tent or tarp into the woods to see if it’s water proof. Just set it up and run the sprinkler for a couple hours, for example. Merry Christmas Mark. Hope I didn’t piss you off too much. You know I’m a loyalty fan
