    In all my travels I have never seen a marina with a lock. I have done locks in Scotland and in the PNW but never seen one like that. I saw you replied to someone else's comment about the tides, so wild!

      @SeafolkSailing  10 дней назад

      Yeah there’s a few of them in Darwin! Definitely a bizarre experience. And the tides are hectic too! Sure you would have seen tides larger?

    when the forecast calls for light and variable winds or there is a high pressure system on top of your route or very close by, then them getting the winds right is very difficult and many times you will not have any wind. It looks like you were right under a high pressure system so all the wind was being sucked up above the clouds.
    Two tips about sails: Try to always keep them balanced as that will stabilize the mast. If you have to run 1 sail, try to make it the main. It will stabilize the boat better and keep the mast from pumping. Most will violate this run when running down wind. If you have a small jib instead of a genoa, then it's usually ok, just be mindful of mast pumping if you do it. Mask pumping wears out the mast, especially your type of mast.

    So Dawin is below sea level? How far below? Must be a good 10' at least to need a lock to raise you up to the sea.

    • @SeafolkSailing
      @SeafolkSailing  12 дней назад +1

      No it’s not below sea level, it’s purely tide related… Darwin’s average spring tide is 5.5m but it can get larger. Due to some of the marinas being off an inlet they have to put locks in so the boats don’t dry out essentially.

    another tip about wind: if they call for 10-15 knots, then it might get up to 20. If they call for 15-20, it might get up to 25 or maybe 30. If they say 20-25 knots, then there is no limit to what it can be and usually is higher.
