Yes. Fun stuff, thanks J! As others have said, this is really the "first" exposure of rap to the main stream. People didn't know what it was and thought it was a mic check. Talented, having fun, making people move and they can perform live or on track and it's tough to tell the difference. That's the talent part. Keep these coming! A fun way to kick off a Friday.
This is the dawn of the rap, then, after Sugarhill, Kurtis Blow ("The breaks") and others rappers like Superwolf. The first rap in Europe was Italian, Pino D'Angiò "Che idea".
Oh man...this...this, I still know every word. I was in 6th [1980-81] grade when I moved from the epitome of white suburbia to a neighboring town that was 50% Mexican (that was the term used then). Yep, Sugarhill Gang and the Gap Band's You dropped a bomb on me, had a lasting effect [affect?🤔]. I had the 12" Maxi Single of Rapper's Delight, I lent a bunch of albums to a friend. Oh yes now we're jamming from 1979. This is such a great upbeat song. Probably the first mainstream hip hop/rap song. Great to skate to 💖
The bass beat is the same as chic’s “good times”, both fantastic songs. My sons played this song continually for a sold year. This song was big back in the day.
Yup, they borrowed that base beat from Chic. So did Queen with Another One Bites the Dust
You should check out some of the many artists Nile Rodgers has worked with. He is the guitarist for Chic (who this groove is, the song Good Times), but he also wrote Get Lucky, David Bowie Let's Dance, worked with Duran Duran, Blonde, Steve Winwood, tons more! This song is so fun!
Thanks to this song, my dad FINALLY bought me headphones! And I didn't even have to wait until my birthday, LOL I was nine years old. And KUDOS to my dad for not throwing away the record, instead.
Loved this and loved the 70's music scene, there were no barriers, it was all about having fun.
Everyone knew the words to this song. It was crazy.
1980, I was in college, and everyone got into this. Now I am so sick of rap crap. This was gold.
Jay, try “It Takes Two”
by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock
Great song!
And Joy and Pain
This takes me back to my high school day...I have always thought that they ended the song too soon. It has such a great tempo and flow and it was the first time I had ever heard of rap and it's one of my all time favorite songs.
Since you're going this route, How about reacting to Fantastic Voyage by Lakeside. I think you'll like that one too. Great reaction to an iconic song. Rapper's Delight is my son's favorite song to sing with his DJ friend at karaoke. Everyone knows the words. Btw, that shirt and the colors looks really good on you.
Oooh haven't heard fantastic voyage for years....am off to dig out the album....now that's showing my age 😂😂
When I tried out for the pompom squad in 1981, we used Fantastic Voyage for it!
My son and I were dancing to this when he was only 8 (he’s 48 now), and we are still loving it after all these years. A great song that really brought people together! Should go down in our country’s history. Thanks for your lovely reaction. The smile never left your face or mine! 😊
Listen to #1 rap song EVER named The Message
You know Jay, I miss your videos! This one being my favorite! Hugs your way! Hope you're doing well!
As people have mentioned, there's Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five - The Message. Here's another couple of.old skool Hip Hop.
Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five - White Lines (anti drugs message (Cocaine in particular, it was rife in the 80s))
Run DMC - It's Like That (the original version is old skool, they did a remake in 1998 with Jason Nevins)
Finally! You finally reacted to this song! We loved this song! Wonder Mike, Hank and Master Gee! Oh how we loved this song and you are right everyone can enjoy this music even at the roller skating rink way back when. We all loved dancing to it when it came on! They had some awesome but funny rhymes here and Wonder Mike had that funny story at the end! Just a wonderful rap song! I love your positive reaction to this and that you enjoyed this song too! Oh and if you ever heard the song Good Times by Chic, that's the dance beat of this song! So good! Peace ✌☮
This has been sampled like a million times. These boys were from Englewood NJ, near where I grew up. Clubs started playin it and it took off.
Yes. Even the famous Ketchup song is loosely based off rappers delight.

From what I heard the chorus is what happens when the guy they talk about in the verses (probably on recreational drugs and alcohol at party) tries to sing his favorite song while intoxicated.
Music brings us all together.
Maybe in the same style is Kurtis Blow's "Basketball." Just fun and catchy.
No, no. From Kurtis it's got to be 'The Breaks'
You have to listen to Kurtis’ collection. Back in the early 80’s he was the king... now he’s the grandfather of hip hop/rap.
DAMN! Haven't heard this rap in decades! Thanks for reacting and bringing back some AWESOOOOOME memories!
I promise you won't regret reacting to Grandmaster Flash "White Lines" or "The Message" next.
Thats the very first rap song I ever heard and the music was so great back in those days. I spent many hours watching the ladies line dancing to this song. I seem to remember an extended version too. Thanks for sharing brother, God bless.
I feel like I'm late, but I'm not that late. However I do feel old. Because I am old.
That was fun to watch again. Thank you. There is an even longer version of the song. Fun, fun.
Gran Master Flash: The message... Herbie Hancock: rock it!
Oh yes! Love those too! I second that!
Yes the message must be heard
Little problem: Rockit is no rap. ;)
@@strasbourgerelsass1467 It's Hip Hop. And yes, Herbie is a jazz musician but that's not the point. It's not a "rap channel" either here.
Mais t'es de Strasbourg ?
Fun stuff, thanks J!
As others have said, this is really the "first" exposure of rap to the main stream. People didn't know what it was and thought it was a mic check.
Talented, having fun, making people move and they can perform live or on track and it's tough to tell the difference. That's the talent part.
Keep these coming! A fun way to kick off a Friday.
"Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Melle Mel - White lines", "Malcolm McLaren - Buffalo Gals" or "Kurtis Blow - The breaks"😁
Man, love going down memory lane. Another goody 🔥
This is the dawn of the rap, then, after Sugarhill, Kurtis Blow ("The breaks") and others rappers like Superwolf. The first rap in Europe was Italian, Pino D'Angiò "Che idea".
@Alfons Garriga if so Celentano was the first in the world, in 1973 :)
Oh man...this...this, I still know every word. I was in 6th [1980-81] grade when I moved from the epitome of white suburbia to a neighboring town that was 50% Mexican (that was the term used then). My very first school dance is when I first heard this song and I friggen loved it! That town introduced me to funk and rap and my love of Latin men. Yep, Sugarhill Gang and the Gap Band's You dropped a bomb on me, had a lasting effect [affect?🤔]. I had the 12" Maxi Single of Rapper's Delight, I lent a bunch of albums to a friend. When she returned the albums, Rapper's Delight wasn't among them, she stole it. Pissed me off, damn it! 😅
I have to say I can't stand rap but this one I bought when it came out and still enjoy
I prefer old school rap like this.
@@nancygianina2858 I remember reading somewhere that Will Smith missed the old, fun rap too and that he was embarrassed to listen to the raunchy new kind with his girlfriend around.
I revisited it today.. I remember every word to this song and it made me smile.. Thanks Jay for the repost!💖
My first rap was Nucleus: Jam On Revenge cassette tape. Wikki-wikki-wikki-wikki
Love this sobg...I am 57 yrs. old now and I grew up with this. Secret, I know every single word. lol! So happy you enjoyed this song, Jayvee. You're so right, everybody partied together and had a good time back then.
Yes, old school rap! They bringing the beat too 🔥
Thank you for reacting to this amazing song! I don’t care what age you are, or what nationality you are, if you don’t move your body while listening to this song something is wrong with you. I’m 57 years old and even if I’m driving and the song comes on my playlist, I am moving in my seat and I don’t care who sees me 😁👍❤️
Brings me back to my elementary school days
I was in high school when this came out and although we usually listened to southern rock etc. this song just made us feel happy and smile and dance. No matter the ethnicity, we all loved this. I am a grandma now but thank you for this post - as I was watching I started grooving in my seat and guess what, I still remember EVERY SINGLE WORD of this song 😂😝❤️
Run Dmc It’s Tricky, Walk this way, Rock Box and Heavy D- We Got our own thang.
1979!! Rap was FUN!!
I LOVED THIS 👇😍
I said a hip hop,
The hippie to the hippie
The hip hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.
I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I know all the words to this 😂
Such a great song. It’s on my playlist, always a hit at our house. Thanks so much for reacting to this one!!!
YES you got it up now I know every word to this one lol
I LOVED that! This was the 1st record (vinyl) that I ever owned when I was 9\10 yrs old. This song came out before anyone even knew what rap was! I'm 48 now & it is still one of my all time favs & I really enjoyed watching you enjoy it.
