The cast all had great acting, especially Kiyo. They chose a good actress to play her, she carried the show. The bright and lighthearted spirit of Kiyo can’t be acted, it has to come from within to feel natural. All the cast did really well. Even from when I started watching at the first few episodes, I noticed that it felt so real, more natural that a reality show. I even wondered if they had a script, or was just given a general flow to improvise on. Because most of the dialogue felt like ad lib. It was just that natural. I’ve only read a bit of the manga and watched a bit of the anime, but I think this Netflix adaptation captured really well that bright, light, slice of life feeling of the original. “It’s not glorifying real life. We want to show that real life is beautiful as is.” -Nana Mori, who plays Kiyo
This Netflix show was beautiful on so many levels. Such a surprise package to watch. Amazing simple food and beautiful Japanese culture. Production values were amazing
this show felt so...homey, I loved the sisterhood between the girls, I love that there was no over the head drama or hate , I love that there was genuine communication and understanding mixed with humor and all. It also highlights the art very well. I need more shows like this
This series is literally a slice of life anime that comes to life. It's so laid-back and wholesome. I particularly love the one-shot moments throughout.
Yes, great adaptation from the anime. I just dont like the Kiyo and Sumire aren't play by actual teenagers. Otherwise, if we look past their ages, then this is a great show!
This show is like a warm hug, something that is very much needed given the times that we are in. I hope that Netflix will give in and give us a new season. 🤞
This is such a beautiful and heartwarming show. I hope to see another season but even if there isn't one, I am grateful to have found this. No other show has made me feel this way.
One of the most heartwarming shows I've watched in a long time... I loved seeing the relationships between the characters, and of course the detailed cooking scenes. It felt like i was wrapped in a warm blanket as I watched the series. And now I can see that some of the warmth came from the cast and crew themselves.
watched an episode everyday after reviewing for my licensure exams. really warmed my heart throughout that period and it was the best way to relax and end the day. the simplicity and beauty was captured so well on screen that i actually felt like i was living the experience with the cast. beautiful work! kiyo and sumire's friendship was beautiful
I have had such a stressful year with work and life that when I ran into this show and eventually started to watch it, it gave me a breath of fresh air. It was such a light story, heartwarming, sweet and so beautiful. I cannot wait for the new season. This was a work of art.
I was so mesmerised by this series...learnt so much about the Japanese GEISHA and MAIKA culture...so rich and steeped in tradition. All the characters were brilliant.. Thank so much for this video about the making of the series...👍👏👏💝💐🌻🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I was expecting this to be a drama filled series but was plesantly surpised how amazing and warm it actually was. I watched it during my breaks as it helped me relax. It also made me miss my highschool friends. That innocent love and friendship really is a once in a lifetime feeling and i miss it. Loved this show
This film shows the beauty and love in life. We need this kind of movie to inspire us to survive in this cruel world. Appreciate the whole team of cast and crew, especially the Director and producer. Thank you so much for making our life happier.
Needless to say that I have cried every single episode as they've perfectly depicted such an ideal community, you just can't help but crave such a peaceful and purposeful life for yourself as well. Congratulations to everyone involved! 🧡 Also, Hiroshi in 02:18 looks so much like pre-debut Mingyu from Seventeen 🥰
Just finished the series and I genuinely touched on how pure and wholesome the story is. A rare story about sisterhood. The cast, set design and soundtrack are really excellent. I have tears once or twice not because of sad but because of how sheer wholesome the character is. To quote Nana Mori , "It's not about glorifying daily life. We want to show that life is beautiful as is." 9/10. Truly a simple and heartwarming story accompany by great cast and melancholic ost.
I have just finished to watch the series- and I loved it soooo much... the old tradition of Japan, all these beautiful girls, frienship, pureness, art, food, respect to each other... Makes my heart full of love... thank you.. :)
Im watching this series for the 3rd time. It´s the most heartwarming series I have ever seen. All these wonderful ladies did a great job. Wish it could be a second season one day. Kiyo and her little kitchen and cooking felt so overwhelming in those cold depressing world we´re just live in. I love ist so so much. Like a warm soup in winter, like a little wish that came true.
Currently rewatching season 1, I love this show so much. Its my comfort show. It showcased simple life, traditional and modern japan as well as traditional oooking and sisterhood. I hope to get another season.
Thank you very much for this magnificent work, it is a magnificent work, we feel a beautiful energy when we watch an episode despite the fact that we are behind a screen, this series is really a transmissible work because I am in the Kingdom of Morocco and yet when I watch each épisode I realize that in my country we experience certain scenes in a similar way, certain laughter, certain worries, etcetera, we have the impression of really being in the life of the maiko, it is so immersive Because there are many countries where we still keep many traditions and that of the maiko, geiko etcetera are similar to what there is in other places on the planet. Thank you very much to the Japanese filming team, from the director, script, to the actresses....💜💜💜 Season two✨️✨️
I love this series. It is so wholesome and cozy and much needed sometimes. I watched it in one go and I will watch it several times again. The only downside: it makes me so hungry, because the food looks so delicious! I‘ll try to cook the meals at home.
I loved this series, from the actors and actresses right down to the theme song. The story is excellent, and Nana Mori (Kiyo) played that role perfectly. I also really liked that the two lead actresses had such a believable 'bond' even though they had never worked together before this series. I really wish this series would come out on DVD. I'd definitely buy it.
It is nearly perfect. Very little "happens" but one gets enveloped immediately in this community. The acting and the production values were stunning. I hope the Geiko districts of Kyoto were pleased by this show as it brought out such a strong sense of who and what they are. すごいです!
I’m currently picking up with my Nihongo and I found this piece of gem. Momoko-san is soooo elegant. Sumire chan and Kiyo chan are so cuteeee. I wish they can make more seasons…
Me and my daughter really love this series. We try to not watch the entire series and we decided to save up each of its episode. It’s so warm and to be honest, this helps me with my anxiety and depression. I believe my daughter will definitely learn a lot such a having a good manners, how to respect elders. Thank you so much🙏🏾I’m really rooting for the Season 2 of this series. I hope that Netflix renew The Makanai. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
On my 2nd rewatch. This is one comfort series. I really liked the set design, similar to how our homes look lived in, papers on the fridge, knick knacks lying around and orderly clutter. Like Kiyo-san, I loved the kitchen, the morning sun coming in through the window. A quiet quality to it. The liveliness of the gathering of the maiko family. No excessive drama. Summary- it's lovely throughout. Anyone, if you know more of similar series, please kindly leave some recommendations in the comments.
Amazing cast (but I was expecting no less from Kore-Eda san!), perfect direction, lovely music. And I'm still hungry days after watching the last episode! This is a work of art.
This was such a beautiful show. It had so much of wisdom and great food involved. It really was oddly nostalici in a way that it reminded me of a friend of mine in childhood that was very dear to me.
I really enjoyed this show! Which is rare, for me.. Thank you for taking us behind the scenes. I hope there is going to be (at least!) another season! 🌸
A very calm and relaxing show to watch. Love how they were able to tell a great story with such a small space. The only problem I have with this show is that in the anime and manga, Kyo and Sumire are both 16 years old. The 2 actresses Natsuki Deguchi and Nana Mori are both in their early 20s. They do not look like teenagers at all so the anime "Kiyo in Kyoto" actually feels more accurate to the manga. Likely could be that teen actresses can be hard to find or that the producers don't want to deal with their school schedules. But if we look past their age gaps and just focus on it as a show, its a great show that Netflix greenlight. I love how there are barely any drama but rather focus on food, friendship, arts, crafts and storytelling. I do recommend this show and for anyone that have not seen the anime "Kiyo in Kyoto", go watch it too. You get to see teenager versions of Kiyo and Sumire and how the show inspired the Netflix Live-action version.
Esta serie es preciosa, para mí ha sido lo mejor que he visto en series asiáticas en en este último tiempo beautiful wonderful ❤️ más series como está Netflix
The best Netflix series. I love it from the first episode, I also watch the Anime version on NHK, but the Live action really have its own unique and calming atmosphere. In Japan we have a word "ほっとする食べ物" = Comfort food, maybe I can say this series as "ほっとするシリーズ" = the comforting series.
i want to lose my memory so i can experience watching this show for the first time again. Like looking at bts stuff feels so weird because all scenes felt real. I felt like a object in their living room witnessing their daily lifes. I felt the warmth of kiyo and sumi’s friendship in my heart, it was just beautiful
Good Job, from most Netflix Series menu. This one stay as my Favorite and looking to visit Japan and walk to SAKU to see Kiyo and Sumire , both are so Comforting ❤
The most beautiful movie in the world though i was always fascinated with Japanese culture but in this movie the culture tradition food etiquette everything showed gracefully
Need more series. This series was like meditation for me.and I am going to try to make the food Kiyo made eventhough some ingredients are not available in my state Kerala.
Hi! It is now one of my favourite Japanese series. It feels. So warm, family-like, one could wish to befriend them and spend time there, especially at the kitchen. Life goes away so hastily! Cheers!
finished the show a few days ago, was a little bored in the beginning because it's a bit different from most of the food-centred dramas i usually watch, but later become captivated by the characters. the cinematography is breath-takingly beautiful and the show is written so well. If people liked this show they should see Hirokazu Koreeda’s ‘Our Little Sister.’ Also a heartwarming slice of life movie about four sisters in rural Japan. No drama, no overbearing personalities, just a beautiful movie about life.
this series is so warm and beautiful, kudos to all the cast and the director
DOP and composer too.
They had great chemistry between them
The cast all had great acting, especially Kiyo. They chose a good actress to play her, she carried the show. The bright and lighthearted spirit of Kiyo can’t be acted, it has to come from within to feel natural.

Indeed, the closest thing I've seen to it ever was "Whisper Of The Heart" from the sadly diseases Yoshifumi Kondo of Ghibli.
Yes, great adaptation from the anime. I just dont like the Kiyo and Sumire aren't play by actual teenagers. Otherwise, if we look past their ages, then this is a great show!

The series is like a comforting bowl of soup that warms the heart and soul.❤
This is such a beautiful and heartwarming show. I hope to see another season but even if there isn't one, I am grateful to have found this. No other show has made me feel this way.
Watch the anime "Kiyo in Kyoto" if you haven't seen it. It's where the live-action took a lot of the source material from too.
The actress that play Kiyo really carry the series. I just found that she's also a singer. Multi talented Mori Nana.

A series that draws you from its overall aesthetic and simplicity. Finding beauty in innocence. Another amazing show from netflix

It's so nice to hear them speaking with their own voices :) and not overdubbed
Agreed
You didn’t get Japanese audio?
@@suikogarden When I watched the show, it was dubbed in English
I was so mesmerised by this series...learnt so much about the Japanese GEISHA and MAIKA culture...so rich and steeped in tradition.

Thank so much for this video about the making of the series...👍👏👏💝💐🌻🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
ずっと前から日本文化の物語を、舞子さんたちの物語が観たいと思ってました。映像化されて嬉しいです。
I loved this series…it took me to a place of beauty and kindness. Just wonderful…

"It's not glorifying daily life. We want to show that life is beautiful as is". What a message.
I absolutely loved this series. The acting was great - I could tell that even with my limited Japanese and English subtitles!

This show is so sweet. I've watched it all the way through 3 times. I haven't done that with a TV show in so long that I can't remember.

I just finished it and it's that kind of show that I wish I could experience for the first time
They need to make a show about Sumo.
Would be interesting
finished the show a few days ago, was a little bored in the beginning because it's a bit different from most of the food-centred dramas i usually watch, but later become captivated by the characters. the cinematography is breath-takingly beautiful and the show is written so well. I hope they do more live action from slice of life shows. The cinematography in this show is amazing and so is the cast.
Love the series so much. Reminds me of little forest ❤❤
The REAL Memoirs of a Geisha I mean Maiko/ Makanai.
Can you guys recommend me other series that have same comforting feel just like this one ?
