    This is what ROLLING STONE had to say about Band Maid at Lallapalooza:
    Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame
    There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. -N.C.

      @@theonlinemusicschool Variance said this about Band-Maid "Early in the day, Japanese rock outfit Band-Maid were quick to capture the crowd at Coinbase, as Saiki Atsumi, Miku Kobato, Kanami Tōno, Misa and Akane Hirose had everyone mesmerized-and perhaps a little surprised-at the firepower of their set, which was most definitely the biggest, best rock 'n' roll show of the day, hands down."
      Chicago Sun-Times "The Japanese rock act is the quintessential example of not judging a book (or a band) by its cover. Inspired by everyone from Carlos Santana to Deep Purple and Smashing Pumpkins, but looking like demure movie characters, Band-Maid is a total exploration of contrast, and about as shock rock as you can be nowadays - not for the blood and gore of, say, GWAR, but for the immediate hypnosis they impart." - Selena Fragassi

    The official Live video of Hate has much better camera work and a better view of the solos (shot during their 10th anniversary tour). However, in this version it's fun to watch Saiki (lead singer) kicking' back, smiling, and watching her bandmates kick ass. You can tell that she's thinking, I am in the best band in the world. Band Maid! Kanami writes songs with more hooks than an angler's shed. Treat yourself now to a watch of the official live video from Yokohama Arena that's on their You Tube page. Then while you're on that page look at the vast wealth of musical greatness that awaits you, pick one and enjoy, turn on your camera and tell us how much you're enjoying it. We'll have heard that song dozens of times, but we'll still be there to watch your reaction to hearing it for the first time, because we'll be a little jealous that we can't hear it for the first time again.
    Glad you gave Miku (rhythm guitar and 2nd vocals) credit, she is often overlooked, but when you have a virtuoso bassist, a solid rhythm guitarist is what allows them to fly.

    Interesting thing about Misa, the Bassist (The Barefoot assassin) She can switch between picking and slapping super fast, that it's seemless. There are a few videos that focus on her, and watching her do it is crazy good. Check out the version from their 10th annivesary tour. It has great footage of the call and response!

  • @BillHallisey
    @BillHallisey 4 месяца назад +15

    MISA, the bassist, really knows her craft. She has an interesting way to hold her pick in her hand where she can instantly switch from picking to slapping the bass. This video from Lollapalooza did not do her justice during "Hate?". A much better view of her work is "Hate?", the official live video from their 10th Anniversary Tour finale concert last November. It's on the official Band-Maid RUclips channel for viewing. The "conversation/duel" between the lead guitar and bass is EPIC. You really need to view it. I believe that Akane, their drummer, and MISA are the most intuitively brilliant "rhythm section" in rock. To watch the two of them play off each other is a wonder to behold.

    The camera work and the mix is much better on the official live version of this at Yokohama Arena (on the official Band-Maid channel), but this video is a lot of fun, seeing them capture an audience that mostly had never heard of them. It's also better captures their whole band chemistry. The Yokohama stage was huge, and they were all spread out, so you miss them interacting with each other (besides the lead guitar and bass duel). My favorite part of this video is after the duel part, where the two guitarists do a little sway at the same time, as they get back into the whole band playing. Just makes me happy to see them together.

      They're a pretty special band. They kind of play like a super group, but they came up together. The drummer is almost a metal drummer. The bassist is basically a lead bassist. The lead guitarist is an excellent player, but is a composer first. The two vocalists work so well together, and the rhythm guitarist learned to play guitar on the job, after the band decided they needed a second guitar. The lead guitarist wrote songs around her playing level, and as training to be able to play the next song. They just have such interesting, dense writing, and such a fun, positive attitude. They made rock music fun for me again.

    Misa uses a pick plus sometimes finger-picks arpeggios with the other fingers, instantly tucks the pick in her knuckle to slap&pop, and plays jazz-style when the song/venue calls for it (acoustic mostly), which is fairly rare.

    The official live video from the Yokohama Arena concert show the "call and response" best but the song remains the same.
    MISA - the bassist - uses a pick and slaps as well. Many times during the same song! There are many instances but you can see it best in this video - ruclips.net/video/UGGILH6wjgk/видео.html
    BAND MAID will mix English with Japanese in their songs. Many songs are this way. Starting with their very first song THRILL.
    BAND MAID live is usually "better" than the MV or Studio song because BAND MAID embellishes more on the song.

    Great reaction and review to our Maids!! They are truly extraordinary, indeed!
    Btw, the song “Bestie” was co-written by Band-Maid and Mike Einzinger of Incubus. It’d be hard to imagine the Maids simply preforming other people’s music these days as they are some of the most capable, creative and interesting composers, arrangers, songwriters, instrumentalists, orchestrators, performers and players on the planet 🌎 by their own right.
    They did perform music written for them initially on their first EP,
    Maid in Japan (2014)
    They then gradually co-wrote lyrics, vocal melodies and harmonies and then music compositions over their next 2 EP’s:
    * New Beginning (2015)
    * Brand New Maid (2016)
    They had their first fully independent song, “Alone”, on their third EP “Brand New Maid”released in May 2016.
    And they’ve done everything themselves since.
    4 full length Studio Albums
    * Just Bring It (2017)
    * World Domination (2018)
    * Conqueror (2019)
    * Unseen World (2021)
    And many EP smaller releases, including a long EP, “Unleash” in Oct, 2022.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unleash_(EP)
    And then there’s their arch-enemies (😂)
    Band-Maiko
    But kudos to them for reaching out and seeking to expand their musical collaborators. They also co-wrote, recorded and co-performed a song with the Mexican Villarreal sisters of The Warning ⚠️ that’ll be released on the Maids upcoming album.
    Btw, If you don’t know The Warning, you need to check them out!
    Next?
    - From Now On - OMV, Saiki’s pee break. 😂

    Hey welcome to the band maid family.❤ "Hate?" is currently a fan favourite, but not for me. IMHO they have better songs (see below) 🫣
    To loosely quote Maidiac Chris Egbert:
    🎸 Bass solos by Misa are more likely to happen than not. 🥃
    🎸 Guitar solos by Kanami are short and crisp.
    🥁 Akane on drums is 'a beast' 🦍 while smiling the whole time 🍌
    🕊 Don't underestimate Miku Kobato: She is the founder of the band, bundle of energy, Maid Cafe magician 🪄, is invaluable as a second vocalist and also has a small solo project of her own (Cluppo)
    🎙And there is Saiki: She was the Ice Queen but the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed 🤣
    🎶 More hooks, riffs and motifs in a song than most bands have on a full album.
    💃Their LIVE videos are mostly superior to the official studio MVs, but the MVs are also excellent!
    🎵 Many songs have catchy phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
    🥳 They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
    I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play, Real existence and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV) and Alone (MV). And if you want to hear some ballads then maybe About Us (MV) and Daydreaming (MV) are good picks. But don't miss some of their instrumentals like From now on (MV) and Onset (Live). And finally a very special live performance is Manners/Blackhole (Official Online Live)🍌 And there is more: For example the songs with Miku in lead, their christmas acoustic concert and the 'cover band' Band-Maiko ;-)
    But if you want to start at the beginning of their career (2013-2017) then go with Thrill (MV, their first video), Real Existence (second video), Alone (MV, first own composition), Freedom(best LIVE performance), Choose Me, Play (LIVE!), ...
    Have fun, po 🕊️
    P.S. don't get me wrong: "Hate?" is good, but besides the duell between Misa and Kanami it's a wall of sound, without any structure. It's not what I (!) like about Band Maid. For me it seems that fans want reactors to listen to this song only because of the Misa/Kanami duell. Mhh, maybe I am wrong 🫣😅

    Great reaction. What I like about this video is there isn't any post pitch correction or fixing missed notes, etc. This is what you get and as you can hear, it's great. I saw them last year and for two hours they kept up this intensity with insanely complex arrangements. I could only hear one time where things got a little shaky with a particular hellish transition. Now you should listen to one of their really well produced songs. MVs for Blooming, From Now On, and Influencer are great. And any of their "official live" videos. The "official" ones were well recorded and mixed, and sound great (and the video directors don't need to be marched out and shot like this one). They have gone through post but not too much fixing of stuff, especially the later ones. One non-official live video you should hear is Corallium Live at Shibuya Eggman.

    Everyone’s told you to do the official live of this song, and I agree. I’ll add that that video has official captions, since you mentioned not knowing what they were saying. All that said, for all its faults, I’ve always loved this video. It’s a daytime festival video that looks and reminds me of some of the classic videos you see of Led Zeppelin in a similar setting. It reminds me of that and feels like that. This is a fantastic band, at the peak of their powers (though they aren’t done yet) showing every other band at the festival how it should be done!

    Welcome to Band Maid, as you've discovered for yourself, the best rock band on the planet (imo of course, though maybe your's soon!)
    I'll skip the other version of this talk and just get to the fun. As you noticed, they sing in English and Japanese both in this song, as they do in nearly every song. Many people will say Official live this and official live that, and they're not wrong, the official live videos are great. However, some of the best stuff you'll hear are still MV's. So I'm sure all of my fellow madiacs have listed a ton of live stuff, here are some great MV's to speed you along the way:
    DIce
    Shambles
    Blooming
    Warning
    From Now On

    You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians. I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands.
    You are going to get a lot of suggestions. To help you with the names:
    Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994
    MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992
    Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991
    Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991

    Careful, it's really easy to get sucked into the Band-Maid vortex. I believe they're well over 120 songs in their discography now. They mess around in a variety of different variations of rock, but mostly hard rock with some dips into metal for the guitar solos.
    The community is, by and large, a welcoming and friendly group, but some of the more rabid fans can be a bit....overprotective, LoL.
    It's ok if not every song is right up your lane, but I'm pretty sure you'll like more of their songs than you will dislike.
    Oh, and there's an official live version of this song that was recorded at their 10th anniversary tour final concert last November on the band's RUclips channel. It probably has better sound than this video. And better videography.

    Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
    Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

    I don't think the camera crew at Lollapalooza has bands like Band-Maid which features the bass as much as they do. When you think about it, everyone in Band-Maid will often get featured for a bit from song to song, which is not common. They missed many of Kanami's solos through the entire show. What's disappointing to me is there seemed to many cameras there for their production. I would have thought they'd had a camera assigned to each member all the time. And if so, then the not the camera person's fault. If they had all the footage, they should have done a second showing of the show with better edits. I would have watched it! PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
    As for a better version of this live, on their Official YT Page, they have the 10th Anniversary Tour Finale at Yokohama Arena. The camera work is way better and the sound, as the setup is set for them alone, is way better. Give it a watch. I think you'll pick up even more things happening in the mix as the Lolla audio mix is not optimal. For the next song, try "From Now On" OMV and you will get to see Kanami take on the lead vocal line with her PRS. For other sides of the Maids. "Manners" and "Black Hole" OLV, a two-for with two completely different feels. "Manners" a bluesy/groovy feel. "Black Hole" as speed demon at 220bpm, their fastest song in their portfolio. Experience the chaos of being drawn into a black hole.

    gotta say when referring to 5 string basses needing a pick to play fast? Might I mention Steve Digiorgio or Jeroen Paul Thesseling? Both play 6-7 string fretless on the norm, technical death metal, prog, jazz fusion.. all finger.. utter cleanness and precision. Or Jonas Fischer, Martin Ketzer, Linus Klausenitzer, Yoav Ruiz Feingold, Tony Choy, Sean Malone, John Myung, etc... all or almost all play finger. Just saying.
    It's EASIER to play clean with a pick, less tiring, and provides a different tone to the attack, but it also limits some of what you can do, as 2.3 finger techniques let you pick notes you can't with a single pick.
    MISA is my favorite modern rock bassist, and she has a great mix of skills, playing with pick, fingers and slap. But don't get it twisted, she wouldn't even cause most of the Prog Death community to bat an eye. I love her, and she is great, in part because of how she always put the music first. But even in Japan you got F Koga Chopper and others who have bigger technical chops.

    Wrong Live, but at least you see their "Battle Gear" maid outfits here. MISA, the bassist, uses a pick, then tucks it away to slap, but she also plucks and we have on occasion seen her TAP. That's our MISA. They tuck little things away in all their performances. Miku (rhythm guitar, red rose) writes most of the lyrics and uses both languages in the songs many times in the same sentence. I won't suggest a song, pick any one on their page. you will probably like it. There is no "star" in this band. They are all stars.
