Beautiful sequences John, I love these valleys! They seem so peaceful today but they echo hauntingly with the industries of the past. They must have been quite stark and scared at that time. So much history is left on the owners and landlords and outputs of each mine in records but it’s so so sad that the stories of individuals who worked the mines quarries and hushes are disappearing. They seem to have faded into a form of bardic memory, and you’re lucky if you meet anyone that has even second or third hand memory of those who worked the mines. My grandfather, worked in the upper dale before moving to coal mines as lead became uneconomic and before mining of spar hit its peak to feed the furnaces of the Consett. I know so little of the earlier times, and he past away at a time when I was very young. Sixty years on and there’s now so much I would ask him.

Hi, thank you for watching and for leaving a message. Before I retired I was chatting with a guy at work who told me about the days when he worked a mine with his dad (I don't remember which part of Weardale). His dad would lower him down the shaft in an old milk churn. One day the bottom fell out and he almost fell through. After giving his dad a good lecture on how dangerous it was, his dad agreed and went off to get something else only to return with a newer milk churn.

Another great video John, 👍🏻 your music goes well with scenery. No need to go abroad when you’ve got such beautiful places like this in our country. 👍🏻👍🏻 keep them coming, I watched this before I went to work this morning

Your beautiful flights over this lovely scenic land makes so pleasing to the eye and your choice of music blends superbly. Some absolutely gorgeous views John and opens a curious mind to everything we see. Fabulous video my friend and so wonderfully captured. Your a natural at this John. Thank you so much Kim, I'm on a roughly West to East heading and there's a lot more of Weardale to the North and South of what you see in the video. I have it easy really, there's so much to see and so much of it is beautiful plus of course, I love making these. I was a little disappointed at some of the jerky changes in direction, mostly those are made worse by a lot of the video being speeded up 2X. The blissful music is by Alan Piljak, I just wish he would create some longer pieces, there are 4 separate tunes in the video. I was hoping to start part 2 today but the weather is awful again!

Thanks Stephen, did you know about the one up Westernhope burn? I couldn't find it - maybe I didn't walk far enough up there.

Wonderful video John. I actually met you briefly earlier this year. Think you may have kindly helped me out with some change at a car park in Durham, before walking up to the Gala Theatre together (Kate Rusby I think). I must have said I lived in Lanehead, because you mentioned your drone work. Absolutely beautiful, and reminds me of how lucky we are to live here.

Hi Frank, yes I remember and Kate Rusby was brilliant! Thank you for leaving a comment, it's always great when people who actually live there like the videos. Parts 2 and 3 are on here now and I'll be doing Part 4 as soon as I can. Now that the central part is done there's plenty of little offshoots like the remote farms at Lanehead, Eastgate to Rookhope, Hill End etc. Great to hear from you Frank and thanks again for leaving a message :)
