There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Heard "the gang around Stalin" and immediately heard the "always sunny in Philadelphia" theme
The Death of Stalin definitely has a similar feel to an always sunny episode
"The Gang Swears Revenge on Khrushchev" would be a really fun idea for one of those gimmick episodes.
I'm imagining that it's just an escalating prank war against Nikita Khrushchev that gets complicated by Stalin's insistence that they drink liquor every time they run into him.
Same
The Gang gets Purged
Dennis Reynolds would easily fill the void of thinly-veiled psychopathy left by Beria
I told myself that I wanted to watch all the episodes together and I wouldn't watch them when they came out, then I immediately clicked on this when it showed up
I am incapable of not getting hungry and not thinking of birria when I hear Beria
😊
I had birria quesadillas an hour ago. Me gusto.
What's birria?
@@KS-PNWBirria is a Mexican braised meat, most often beef, cooked in a stock made with dried chillis. Also often served with the stock for dipping like a French dip. Though, for birra, they often take the veg used to make the stock and blitz both together so they don't waste anything.
It's good, and I think dried chillis can be shipped anywhere. So look up a recipe. It really doesn't have to be beef either. I've done it with pork and chicken.
@@plantain.1739 thanks. That sounds GOOD
I love this podcast so much I let a Hero Wars ad play without skipping it so you get a pittance of ad revenue.
I don't think Robert really understands the significance this holds. I've heard some shit
"The People's Jester" was a really good one
"I did nothing wrong and they indited me"
- Molotov
8:55 I was totally hoping when he said Molotov of to be finished by "Of cocktail fame", not the actual history we got xD
I mean, the cocktail *is* named after him. He was the guy who kept claiming that Soviet bombing of Finland was "food aid" and they were dropping "bread." Finns fighting Red Army tanks, then, named their improvised anti-tank grenades for him, saying "a drink to go with your bread!"
On poison dwarf: In German there's an insult: "Giftzwerg" which... is literally poisonous dwarf.
9:14 the revelation that Stalin was just a Mad like 50 years before MST3K
Stalin: Ill send them cheesy movies! the worst i can find LA LA LA! and they'll have to set and watch them all or ill send all their family's into worker mines...LA LA LA!
WORKER ROLE CALL
POTATO SIGN!!
4:38 Robert, DO NOT bring up Chiligate, I had to live through Chiligate, it was awful. I use a wheelchair and some insane weirdo compared offering someone homemade chili to grabbing a chairer by their wheelchair's handles (which, unlike offering your neighbor food, is assault) and when I said WTF, their insane friend came and screamed at me and told me I was ableist and harassing them.
Oh god the chili drama. Which then went directly into "threatening to kill someone's pet pig" drama along with other equally charming offshoots.
Yeah, I've actually to chronolog the entire web of dramas a few times because I was targeted lightly a few times by the pig-murder-threatener. The trouble is that there are so many bad actors involved in a sprawling network of mess that trying to explain any of it leads to a red string a thumbtacks style scenario. Basically, the chili lady is the same lady who owns the pig, whose name is Rufus, and it was one of the crazy clique leaders threatened to kill and eat her pig. I think the pig threats happened happened before "Chiligate" took off, which I witnessed, to my horror, live.
I saw the original chili posts _before_ the crazies found them, perfectly wholesome posts about neighborly concern and community behavior that were making my day. Then came insane drama-trolling. I remember one of the deeply unpleasant people involved in boosting that drama was defending an analogy that compared "offering your neighbor chili" to the act of "grabbing a wheelchair user by their chair handles without consent" which is assault, and as a chairer myself, I responded with WTF, and then some unhinged whackadoo came swinging for me and screaming that I was harassing their disabled friend by being upset assaults I've endured as a chairer were being compared to food-sharing.
OMG every time Robert makes a video game reference, it hits me right between the eyes. The Red Alert reference KILLLLLED me.
OH NO, NOT THE BERIA! I can't take more of t-kidding. What a monster. God, this is so depressing.
I don't know Beria's story, but it seems ominous that at the start of episode 2, we haven't even left Georgia yet.
Kirov reporting for duty! - Sergei Kirov, probably
In German "poison dwarf" is a pretty common term for toxic or abrasive people, it might be a common term in Russian too instead of being specifically concocted for Yesov (sp?)
Stalin invented Photoshop
Ask Yezhov about that...
@@cindys9491 "What, who is Yezhov?" -- Stalin

The Lada is like if you asked a kid to draw a car
If I had to be one the seven murder dwarves; I'd definitely rather be Poison Dwarf
ABP, Always Be Plotting.
I’m a fan of the podcast from Russia. Good to see some light shed on our history for the western audience. I think it would have been nice if you used some of Russian or other post-soviet sources if they exist in English translation, though they must be kind of a minefield with all the biases.
The 'Rhys' in John Rhys-Davies rhymes with 'fleece' not 'mice'. It's a Welsh name.
Robert needs to get his shit together.
Red alert 2 wasn't among the best Red alerts, it WAS the best Red Alert.
I expect an apology to the Red Alert community, Sophie.
Didn't he also call the Kirov a Warship?
Or do I need to purge a cochlear nerve?
Robert Evans really needs to do one of these shows about David Curtis Stephenson (Indiana KKK Grand Dragon from the 1920s).
I'm engaged!
7:10 To be fair, I think "dacha" can mean something like "cabin" as well as "country home." It was not a rich folk's thing exclusively, pretty normal people could also have a dacha, and it could be quite modest.
With how many times you mentioned molotov and how he has the molotov cocktail named after him, are you going to do an episode on him as well
I'm reminded of that "If Facebook existed during WW2" post from like the early 2010s.
N*zis: We are going to invade Ukraine.
USSR: You underestimate how many people I have and overestimate how much I value their lives.
I'm only about 15 minutes in and I hope he doesn't turn out badly, but Victor Serge is one hell of a badass name. Lots to live up to there
I won’t stand for Sliders slander!
rhys davies was in robot in the family
OHHHYEAHHHH
Smithers had a body count alright.
Love from a Suris and Vaush fan!
They only make one car.
This is ironic and stupid. Stalin and his cronies are the "messiest bitches." That's the thing. It was messy to begin with. Also, the "stalinist position" is "well, what the fuck?"
Ew, I'm the same height as Beria.
Not anymore...I'm not sure his current height but it's guaranteed to be less than yours.
Shame. Shame. Shame.
What's shameful about telling history?
cope
Shame...for you! Ya Jabroni!

@@jakitron890 Well you see, it's good when you tell the history of evil and bad countries like america, but the Soviet Union? You can't criticize the soviets! They did literally nothing wrong ever!
03:00 - Simply "you" singular.
06:30 - Literally, "given, gift".
07:50 - CCCP is the only antithesis-empire example.
16:40 - when do you drop the cold irony?
17:30 - Lenin forbid the killing. The people did it despite the order.
19:25 - Is what now?
The following 10 minutes is sheer garbage.
Nadia, Nadezhda, means "hope".
44:00 - You're just sad.
lmao imagine defending a pedophile and mass murderer. Couldn't be me
I'm only 19 minutes in, but I have a few counters to the points you made to timestamps I've passed. The first I have nothing, I don't speak Russian. The second, if you google "what is a dacha" the results say what they refer to, a small summer home common in post-soviet states. The Soviet Union was a federal state that oversaw a multi-ethnic, multinational population. If having semi-autonomous states makes it a non-empire, then America is not an empire. If having representation for minority populations makes it not an Empire then Austria-Hungary was not an Empire. This is a comedic history podcast. That's going to lead to some irony. They haven't said that Lenin ordered the Tsar be killed, only that revolutionaries did, and that can taint a revolution. I don't necessarily agree with that, but either way nobody here seems to have said Lenin ordered the killing. If he says it right after I unpause at 18:51 I'll take that L.
the definition they give for dacha is absolutely correct, what are you on about
What's sad about pointing out a sycophant?
