    If Colin is correct that Robespierre is moving toward a more moderate position that would involve compromise with the middle, it is even more ironic that he basically killed Danton and company for the same thing

      Ironic perhaps, but evilly so.

      Seems to me it was simply a Danton part 2 operation and he is a viscous dictator that will kill everyone so he himself can stay on top.

    He couldn’t laugh at himself? Took himself very seriously? Oh dear - big red flag in a person’s character - those who have no sense of humour about themselves (or anything else most likely) can, in my opinion, become dangerous to others - as in fanatical.

      We are talking about a man who declared himself the "supreme being" during the final year of the terror.

    I don't understand why Robespierre gets so much sympathy. He unabashedly lead the reign of terror, evil both by today's and old standards. If he was so obsessed with the People, why didn't he spend more time fixing thr economy. No, he didn't live frugally because he was a champion of the people, but because he was an absolute fanatic and had no other life.
    Prove me wrong.

      Ask Professor Colin Jones, he might be able to prove you wrong.

      @tomdonnelly6156 actually I did 🙂
      He does have the best argument... But it amounts to two things: 1. R was (understandably) paranoid, and 2. He really thought corruption could be purged. Even with these reasons, the effective murder of 17k people is hard to excuse.
