At 37:47 we hear Louis had a "mechanical mind," and that is a good way to describe him. What Louis XVI loved most was locksmithing - the science and art of making and working with locks. He liked tinkering with locks and keys. Things needed to make logical sense to him. He wasn't heroic or romantic, just a practical person. That is the tragedy of absolute, hereditary monarchy. Louis was a decent man better suited to the profession of locksmith than king.
He had no problem spending the country’s money on himself
Louis supported many charities--among them the American Revolution.
@@-KMA- A ruler who attempts to cause great change which benefits the working class will face great opposition from the nobility and aristocracy. Since the outcome and intentions of the rulers could not be known, the end was horrific.

@@-KMA- I think the gentleman's point was that Louis XVI was a better man than his predecessors. His immediate 2 predecssors were never sensitive towards the problems of the general populace. Also unlike his predecessors he was a lot older when he became king. It makes a big difference if you are told you are king/queen the Monarch of a place when you are 5 compared to 23. He didn't have the drive/strength to do something to change the system. Basically it was an odd combination of a king wanting to be benevolent but didn't have the stomach to take on the system. As far as taking from the people he definitely could have done more. Who knows maybe he wouldn't have faced the guillotine if he had tried harder.
This brings me such joy- having read about Marie and Louis and how they really were I’m so happy to see them portrayed as they were, young rulers trying to fix things but struggling with the court

@@meggoldnight Marie Antoinette was conspiring with the first monarchist coalition to try to overthrow French Revolution and reestablish the absolute monarchy instead of the revolutionary constitutional monarchy… Marie Antoinette had family in Austria, but France and Austria were starting to be enemies since French Revolution… The king on the other hand was surrounded by traitors who gave him bad advices… like the nobles who asked Louis XVI to put his veto against the decrees that would give french constitution of human rights and with same logic abolish slavery… the human rights constitution said also that the privileges of nobles was going to be abolished so Louis XVI refused it to sign it at the beginning… He even imposed his veto against it… but then happened another mass protest who reached to his palace so he finally accepted to sign the human rights constitution
Marie Antoinette on the other hand pressured and convinced the king to escape to Austria, probably to ask Austria to invade France and reestablish the French absolute monarchy instead… they escaped and then they were captured and accused of treason, which caused their death… the capital punishment for treason was death, and is even applied in nowadays world… so both got gu*llotined for conspiracy and 1 year after their death, the French constitution of human rights could finally be adopted, which is a big symbol… the death of the king gave birth to French human rights constitution
Great documentary. I have seen so many documentaries about Marie Antoinette but this one seemed to focus more on King Louis XVI. I learned new details which I had not ever heard of before. Very good

Another brilliantly produced and acted docudrama; the actor who played Louis XVI (Gabriel Dufay), in particular, was amazing and captured the complex character of that doomed king perfectly.

Unfortunately people revolt in the time of the most benevolent rullers and think they have done something great, whereas the rullers who have no problem shedding blood of their own people almost all die peacefully in beds. The ones who show love and weakness are in more risk to lose their heads by the very people they love and care for. sad.

Louis hired the right advisors and had the right instincts... but he had no spine. Whenever he came against the intransigence of the Nobility or clergy or whoever, he would fold like a cheap accordion. And then he decided to stand his ground and got his head cut off.
I think there is a high possibility that they would have died either way, by the revolutionaries or by the aristocracy. The only difference is that he could have gone down in history as a hero, as a true champion of the french people, instead, he died as a weak and indecisive man that took too long to stand his ground. And Marie Antoinette, well, nothing new under the sun for women, an unjustified witch hunt.
Yep he was worried about making the mistake of his ancestor Charles I who was too inflexible with his people to the point he decided to go to war against them. Louis VXI was the opposite he was too flexible that his people felt the had to go to war against him.
This coupled with the fact that the Ancien regime was outdated, corrupt, and terribly inefficient led to the Revolution.
If he had just stuck with what Turgot had advised and if need be used the military to enforce his will on the nobility and the clergy maybe France would still be a monarchy today.
@@JustinLaFleur1990 Yes, use the military? What a way. It should be noted that the Clergy and nobility did pay taxes just not enough, the Clergy paid a voluntary amount though. A lot of the opposition also came from the Parlements who were not landed aristocracy and the people actually supported them. I feel like the reductionist takes on the matter miss certain things.
@John Not Real Name no part if the problem with the Acien regime was that the Nobility and the Clergy were exempt from taxation and the commoners bore ALL the burden of taxes and sometimes had to pay the same taxes repeatedly because tax collectors didn't really log that this person had paid their taxes. If they refused even if they paid they ran the risk of being thrown into prisons like the Bastille.
@@JustinLaFleur1990 The Nobility were the most taxed in Europe and the Clergy paid a voluntary amount but I am unsure whether they were equivalent to the proposed taxes. This is not to write the amount they payed was that much though, the people definitely were burdened too much. However for the Church's part, they were also basically the welfare system. The Bastille by that time was used to deviant criminals, Nobles, who did not want a trial. The days of peasants staying there were long over.

Thing is the family could have gotten away if they had just listened to the advice they were given . They were told to travel inconspicuously. Instead they insisted on traveling in luxury and as such they were ultimately caught . I’ve often wondered what would have happened if they had listened to reason . Would they have gotten out alive ? Would they have eventually retaken the throne ? How would history be different ? It’s an interesting thought

They fled Paris in a socalled "Berliner" coach, the late 18th century equivalent of today's stretch limousine - the flashiest vehicle on four wheels, very inconspicuous indeed ! They just couldn't do without their luxury, if it meant the death of them - which it ultimately did in the end.
An excellent presentation just goes to show that 3 times Louis had tried to fix the problem but just didn’t have the strength to follow through . Had he followed Turbots advice initially we may still have a French Monarch today . The Aristocracy & the Clergy were the true enemies of France not the King & Queen .
I'd argue otherwise, if he followed Turbots advice, he will either be poisoned or replaced by his brother before long, considering the entire population of versailles will then be turned his enemy - and his brother will probably struggle similarly after taking power.

You should watch Fall of Eagles_another quality historical drama based on the three monarchies of Gernany, Russia and Austro Hungary. Spread over 14 episodes it charts those monarchies from te mid 19c to their fall at the end of WW1

Love what you guys put together for this family. Great to see the root of the problems were parliament. Never knew Louis wanted to tax the rich and was strongly opposed. As always great work from this channel.
Why is it "great to see the root of the problems were parliament"? Are you that desperate for autocrats to love and identify with? Louis was an awful dictator that tried to use the army to destroy the national assembly and fled the country to get the foreign powers to invade France just so he could get back to being an absolute monarch.
Parlement which is different to the parliaments that we know today. The French Parlement during the Ancien Regime was more reminiscent to an appellate court than it was to a legislative body.

In all the memoirs and history that I've read, I've never heard that Louis suffered a mental breakdown and was "seeing things". Nice touch on your part.
I never read that either. His erectile dysfunction is well-known. Maybe, though with liberty, they inferred from that episode in his life that he was a depressive, but attributed to his inability to rule. Freudian, no doubt, but inaccurate probably.

Louis was frequently declared to be perfectly capable of sexual intercourse, as confirmed by Joseph II, and during the time he was supposed to have had the operation, he went out hunting almost every day, according to his journal. This would not have been possible if he had undergone a circumcision; at the very least, he would have been unable to ride to the hunt for a few weeks afterwards."

I can only conclude that King Louis was a king that held no dominance over anyone. he was too play-safe and nice, never took risks. he had the right plan that no one agreed upon.
It is unfortunate that Turgot read people as badly as Louis did. A more sensible person would have taken things more slowly. It was obvious, even though Louis was keen to make changes, that he was indecisive, and fearful. Turgot should, therefore, have provided Louis with small victories in the taxation issue, building Louis's confidence until he would feel more able to take on the bigger problems.
The beginning of the revolution, the abolition of the privileges and the constitutional monarchy, brought that. Still he kept making the wrong decision and pushing against the changes. He never wanted deep reforms and wanted to maintain the tyrannical absolute monarchy.

The guillotine was for anyone and everyone, including children, born into the aristocracy who couldn't get out of the country in time-- and within a generation France was a monarchy again. Rinse and repeat throughout the 19th century. Do not wish for the return of the guillotine. Never has a violent revolution achieved the goals of those that started it.
I love history and am so glad I found Real Royalty. This is a story that has always intrigued me.

As we were reminded more than once , at the back of Louis's mind was the fate of the English King Charles I, who was executed for waging war on his own people.

I must have seen thousands of documentaries on the French kings, Versailles, and the French revolution, but, this video is probably the finest of them all. Excellent video and I highly recommend it for everyone. Excellent and fair historical account. Enjoy!

To an extent, Louis and MA were the scapegoats for the sins of generations of aristocracy. They meant to govern well, but they wanted to be absolute monarchs in a revolutionary age. (Remember how Americans rebelled against a King, who was not in fact absolute?) Let's spare a thought for the many ordinary people who suffered, starved, and died before, during and after the Revolution.
How can you say they meant well, when you also say that they wanted the absolute monarchy. It's a paradox. You can't mean well when you want to keep a tyrannical regime
@@booliev3275 In their view, an alternate form of government was simply not possible; it would lead to anarchy and bloodshed and god knows what. That was how they reared. Not unlike how some people think a socialist or communist government is not possible today (for long). It would be even more difficult for them to comprehend, because other forms since Greece and Rome had not been tried. You could include the English Revolution/Commonwealth period but that didn't go so well. It wasn't just aristos who thought that way, but the vast majority of ordinary people in Europe at that time as well.

It’s easy to blame the King and Queen. Louis’ problem was that he was indecisive. Marie Antoinette although frivolous was unfairly vilified through anti-Austrian propaganda. There were many factors contributing to the Revolution including inflexibility by both the Church and the nobility. As well as coincidental factors such as unseasonably cold weather which led to decreased harvests.
And as you can see, the Revolutionaries did far worse than the monarchy once in power. They terrorized citizens, murdering them on flimsy charges.
Starving people when you live off of them in absolute luxury made them angry.

It's interesting that both the Russian and French revolutions have a common root cause, their absolute rulers were in isolation.
Versailles is a gorgeous palace but too far from the capital. Nicholas and Alexandra of Russia withdrew from their capital at the Alexander palace.
Neither Louis nor Nicholas could gauge the mood of their people, instead relying on second hand reports. Fatal error.

As is usually the case, the nobility that surrounds the king and queen are the most despicable ones. Because it's not as if they're in the spotlight when all hell breaks loose. Naturally the king and queen suffer the brunt of public scrutiny. They figure that they can always escape the worst of it. This has been the case time and time again. Leaders try and enact positive reform, and the nobility surrounding them, who enjoy all the riches and power, have little to no sense of patriotism for the country, and no regard for the common man.
Not saying these two didn't have a hand in it. They made many mistakes, but to be fair they were quite young and naive. They were quite literally too young to reign.
The older nobility did know better, they just refused to change, and figured it wouldn't be their problem once shit hit the fan.

I’m a truck driver and I listen to documentaries while driving, and I get so confused when there’s two minute long portions of a different language and I don’t know what’s going on and they vaguely allude to it when they come back in English but they don’t actually explain what they just said.

As a French person I appreciated this documentary on our history. Perhaps, with the benefit of history, the King and Queen did not deserve to die, but there is no revolution without violence and the terror established by Robespierre was terrible. All the same, In 1789, France lived under a feudal regime which had not progressed since the Middle Ages, just like Russia in 1917. It was so much that it changed. The French Republic has had a very eventful history in the 250 years following the revolution. Today we live under the Fifth Republic but as a Frenchman, I am proud that it has been lived until now. It carries universal values such as human and citizen rights. its motto is:
LIBERTÉ,ÉGALITÉ,FRATERNITÉ and always inspires people around the world.

Louis XVI had some understanding of the needs of his people and the implications of the enlightenment: The infrastructure and agriculture in France were considerations. The inertia, habits and odd 'traditions' of his court were overwhelming for a weak King, the character of his court lackeys and ambitious ministers. The habit of extravagance from Louis XIV/ XV's days were a problem. Circumcision (the treatment for phimosis) is only painful for 3-7 days and would not impact hunting after that.
He was hunting while the treatment was supposed to happen though. Extravagance can help the speculators but if it fails...you are @~?£ed.

No the documentary is English. But it uses a French movie and interviews some French historians.
Looking at the number of chateaux still there in France & the obvious huge wealth that was needed to build them & keep them going, it fits in very well with this story of how off-kilter the balance of powers was then, and now we see this happening again - any guillotines still in working use I wonder - the West in general is now suffering from this same trend towards the haves & have-nots, and humans appear not to have learned the lessons of this time ! Admittedly the lush life these upper class people enjoyed is almost beyond comprehension, and it looks quite ridiculous to normal people now, when those with money appear to have lost all sense of proportion & reality, so watch out people - we are right on the cusp of this happening again - in the US especially !
The Chateaux were practically superfluous to requirement - because most of the nobility was concentrated in the Court and had been since the time Versailles was built. This had been decided by Louis Quatorze to prevent the nobility plotting behind his back in their homes. The outcome was that everyone had to be at the Court and they were all vying for favour; with each man standing on the hands of the man below him on the ladder leading up to the King. This also meant they had to spend a lot of money to be seen to outdo one another - whereas living at home (and I reckon many of those chateaux were skeleton-staffed or mothballed most of the time) would have been much less costly than having to constantly buy new clothes and jewels and make impressive entertainments to attract the attention of the King and Queen. It was Louis Quatorze that put into place this dreadful structure that led directly to the revolution. Another point of course, is that had the nobility been living all around the country concentrating on their estates, the King would have probably had less pressure from them as they would have been scattered, not united. Instead, they could have just got the message telling them to pay up whatever they were supposed to.
The rebells that started the French revolution and killed Marie Antoinette were caught and put to death by the French police.

I agree. The common people do not ask for much. To be able to work and provide for our families. To have hope for a brighter future. But in today's world we are finding the rich getting richer, while the poor get poorer. All while they sit in their ivory towers, eating caviar, and we find it almost impossible to afford basics like food and housing.

The presentation of the documentary is outstanding but one thing is evident that no matter how King Louis XVI was interested in bettering the lives of his subjects by taking advice from such brilliant advisors ultimately those advice became a flop due to the lack of liberalism and excess of conservatism among the aristocratic and clerical elite!
The Revolution killed the wrong man. He was blocked by the parliaments and those with vested interests, not the other way around. The Revolution should’ve fought for the King and people against the nobility, instead they killed the King who loved them most.
The king refused to sign the French human rights constitution and even imposed his veto against it… so he totally deserved the gu*llotine!

Thank you… as a French person, I have to resort to foreign, objective post mortem analysis; it is impossible in France, where the revolutionary root causes, and it’s consequences have still not been digested. we still fail to recognize the great catastrophe that this was, we are still paying the price 250 years hence, the failure to peacefully, methodically reform the state as the needs of the changing world demand… so we keep electing temporary kings (more evolved than cutting their heads) and voting them out, but nothing changes, because reforms can’t be implemented.. the inevitable end is a failed state and the likely emergence of a dictatorial regime to move on… which is a shameful outcome, completely at odds with the ideals of.. the revolution

Mother of Louis XV was a descendant of Charles I of England. Tenuous connection but basically all western European monarchs were related somehow.
That was all I intentional. They are all related to one another...all cousins of one another.
Actually they fled Versailles in the night disguised as commoners. They attempted to go to Austria to Marie's family, but on the way were caught because someone recognized Louis. They were imprisoned and on trial for about a year before execution. Their children were imprisoned for about a decade and weren't informed that their parents were dead. The son (Louis the 17th) was beat and tortured and never seen again. The daughter got out eventually and because her brother's death was never confirmed, she many young men come to her claiming they were her brother Louis the 17th. This haunted her forever. But, I bet they may not have been executed if they hadn't tried to escape. Unfortunately, were far too young to rule a country and literally had no idea what they were doing. It's like Louis the 14th did everything he could to prevent people overthrowing him, which ironically ended up happening anyway. Maybe not to him directly, but his future kin paid the price. Such an interesting time in history.

He then told us to put our names in the blank. The point was that we can never really hope to ape' the style of some writer or other, but we can, with effort, find our own way of expressing ourselves--to find our own style.
It occurs to me that perhaps Louis XVI should have attempted to simply rule in his own style-, and never mind his grandfather and ancestors.
Specifically the nobility were except from the Taille direct land tax, and nominally also the Vingtieme (which they could buy an exception from). Unfortunately for Louis 16 the absolute monarchy of 17th century France had turned into an oligarchy due to increasing resistance from the parliaments to Louis XV, and his grandson LXVI was powerless by the time he came to the throne to enact reforms.
The nobility were still the most taxed in Europe though.

We have that here too. Today it can be thought of as those who, made rich by various means, are privileged enough to challenge tax laws.
Some argue it is through corruption that they are allowed or spared equal taxation; their not sharing equal, fair tax burden with everyone else.

There's no question that French political philosophers were well regarded in the Colonies. The Founding Fathers were greatly influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and probably Baron de Montesquieu when authoring the Constitution.
But make no mistake, backing from the various monarchies of Europe were all of the same in their constant feuding going back centuries. The American revolution was just as much a part of a world war as it was a war of local colonial independence. Many things were in flux. To ascribe simplistic, narrow explanations for the courses of nations is denying the complexities that accompany their motivations, primarily self interest. What I mention above cannot encompass the totality of interest of France & Europe at the time. This is not the forum for it. Ever since humankind climbed down from the trees we have been blundering around trying to find some kind of equilibrium. So far the magic formula has eluded us.

I find it little difficult to understand why would Marie Antoinette have to follow in stepps of Habsburg empress, considering different situation in France and Austro-Hungarian empire, especially due to different social structure, serfdom system and the constant threat from south wheter it was Ottomans or revolting teritories. The sudden change in environment such as Versailles which was well known for burgeoise display and similar behavior would over the years most likely affect her character, especially due to drastic view of her persona. In Austro-Hungarian empire she would be seen as a ruler, but in Franc she was enemy from the beggining. In the end the hatred towards her escalated and there were displays of animosity within noble circles as well. Considering this, loss of a child and issues of her husband could affect her character much more severly than the upbringing in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Also lets not forget tendency of nobles to spoil their child have effect on her world view. These tendencies were well present within Austro-Hungarian empire as well, thus the filantrophy and generosity of her parents could distance her from the social problems of the subjects to the extent in which we could say, she could loose touch with reality. Or simply option number two, her words could have been taken out of context for spread of popular idea of cruel foreign empress that cast shadow over the kingdom of France through the king himself.

The lack of funds for pursuing a powerful foreign policy has haunted France up until now. This is the reason why France agreed to the European Union. In theory France could have made its expensive foreign policy with the money from German exports. However, as we can see today, it is not so easy anyway.
In my humble opinion I believe Louise XVI should have controlled the narrative with his own press . Paint a more realistic and favorable picture of Versailles. Bring his desire for tax reforms to the public...lay blame on the resistance of the nobility.
