This is a REVIEW of the Canon RF 135mm f1.8 IS. I also compare it to Sony’s 135mm f1.8 which was my favorite Sony G Master Lens. Regardless of which system you have, this is one focal length that EVERY SINGLE PRO must have in their bag. These lenses are some of the best that Canon and Sony make.

Anyone else think the Manny Ortiz Pictures look like Giga Chad?😂
Especially in Black and White 😂
I got my hands on the 135 today, and I definitely like it more than 85. It looks so good!!!
In my opinion 135 better for portrait too.
I could somewhat justify spending on my RF 50 1.2 as I got it used for under $2000 and I can use it throughout an entire wedding. However $2000 for a 135mm which I might not always be able to use due to needing more room to work with just doesn’t seem like money as well spent.
I still have the 135F2 which I use all the time, so until it kicks the bed, I shall carry on with it.
135mm is the third most used focal length in the fashion industry as well as portraiture and one of the top 5 most used focal lengths for events, journalism, weddings, sports, motorsports and much more.
@@nogerboher5266 I’m not saying it’s not a useful focal length. I use it all the time when I can. However sometimes I just don’t have room to make use of it, so upgrading over my 135F2 doesn’t seem worth it.
If you aren't making money from it. EF135L is more than enough. The pricing for RF135L is same as Sony 135GM
I'm happy on how Jared can be open on how gears matters too. He's probably the most "honest" voice out there 👍
I love 85mm f1.4 from Sigma and 135mm f1.8 GM from Sony for street photography, I love the 135mm f1.8 for shooting during the day and the other for the night, both are a great couple, I bought the 50mm 1.2 GM from Sony before the 85mm and it did not give the results I was expecting according what I like to do (street photography including people for portraits), 85mm and 135mm just give me the distance and deep the field I need and more important consistent results for focusing moving subjects
The EF 135mm is my favorite lens and is always on my camera. I preordered the RF version the first day it was announced without hesitation! As a prime shooter, I use the 135mm as my telephoto on wedding days instead of the 70-200.
That’s awesome! I preordered the RF as well. I plan on using as a telephoto on weddings and for outdoor portraits. I have never owned a 135 mm. I was alway in the fens about the EF version. Now I am patients waiting on Canon to release the RF 35mm.
I also use 70-200 RF 2.8 for reach during weddings. Placing my order for the 135 today. I called Canon and they said expect the lens to ship in Jan.
Hey Fro. I've been a big fan of your channel for a decade. Thanks for making photography so fun.
You were Dris77 before I guess
I'm feeling a 85mm, 135mm, 70-200mm comparison video
I believe sports photographers take the lens hood off so that they can get the front objective closer to the netting, which reduces the netting's visibility in, or impact, to the photo.
Precisely
A+ as usual. My EF 135/2 bought used was a steal. With R6's IS I don't need IS in the lens. In any case, I can shoot at 1/500-plus for indoor stage events, and the near-unbelievable image quality lets me crop deeply, similar to what you demo'd with the 135/1.8, effectively giving me a 400mm f/2. Bonus: it has a magical ability to bring out the humanity in images of human faces. Just sayin'. (Age 80, 56 years in photography.)
Hade to believe its a 25ish year old lens
@@Herkulez1981 I'm no expert, but I suspect some lens designs are timeless - Leica Summicron 35, etc. I really don't care if X lens from Samyang is sharper, there are lenses with qualities that aren't worth trying to reduce to numbers. The 135/2 just makes me go all harmonious inside. :-) How's that for tech precision?
I'm really considering one of these for shooting gigs/live music that I have just started being paid for. I love my 70-200 f2.8L for this but this lens would be a game changer for those low light, tight portraits with the lovely bokeh and background.
Great video Jared and thanks for your review!
Jared, I love your content. I have loved my Canon EF 135 f/2.0 for years using it on my 5DMk3 and 4. I now use it on my Canon R5 and it's even better. Could you please do a video with a head to head comparison of both the EF 135 f/2.0 and the RF 135 f/1.8 and show the differences? I would love to save up for the RF 135 but if it's not a huge difference, I will pass and put that money on other gear or travel.
Thanks!
Would be great if Canon brought back the 200/1.8. A great lens from days gone by.
I wonder what size, weight and price would be for such a monster…
@@pawelmod3292 EF 200mm f 1.8 L cost around $4500 originally (1988) and weight 6.6 lbs (3,010g) Size was 5.12" x 8.2" (130mm x 208mm) without the included lens hood in place. RF version probably slightly larger and price around $6500 - $6900 I would estimate.
I second the motion!
@@pawelmod3292 About the same weight and front element size as a 300/2.8 but a bit shorter.
@@pawelmod3292 If you want to see a real monster of a lens, Nikon made a 300/2 back in the day. Front element was about the size of a same-gen 400/2.8 but the lens was the length of a 300/2.8. Very cool bit of glass, came with its own 1.4x TC.
Dream lens, I’ve been loving the compression on my old EF 135mm f2 and to my surprise it can do so much more than portraits
Amen, brother. I use my 135/2 for many other things - dance, singers, school graduation, and just to show the beauty and character of a face. For those, it's absolute magic.
@@AnandaGarden agreed. I shot an entire NHL calendar with one a few years back.
@@AndrewCCM Ha-ha, THAT made me smile, how wonderful! Shh, don't tell anybody, let's keep the used market where it is. :)
On my list to get for sure since I have the EF version. But love this line, "That's what the point of having fast glass is... separate you from your money" 😆
You can use 85mm f 1.2 in crop mode, and get 135mm f 1.9...two great portrait lens in one )))
8:17 I only recently learned what a Winnebago is (not American)
I have been waiting on the RF135mm since day one of the R series.
I still have my FD135mm on my AE-1!
Can’t wait to add this one to my collection.
Gotta dissent from your always deactivating the control ring on RF lenses. As an old film SLR shooter from 1968 to 2003, I love getting back an on-lens aperture ring. I set the main dial to control shutter speed like the old top of the camera dial for that and the rear dial for ISO. Shooting RAW in Manual exposure with the three color histogram in the EVF (more informative than a match needle), I'm home! I had gone to Live View on my 70D and 80D to get the accuracy of dual-pixel AF, but I'm back to viewfinder shooting with my R7 - which is actually smaller than my old Canon FT but so much more capable than the 80D it replaced.
Agree. The 135 lenses are usually the killer lens of any brand.
It separates you and your money! Made my day°😂👍🏻👋🏻
Already have the RF 85 f1.2 and RF 70-200 f2.8, so, I a gonna skip it. Yes, they do look a bit different but not worth lugging so much extra gear around on an actual shooting day... Having too much with you can become a downside quickly... I am sure one day I will buy this one though, if for nothing else, for fun!
Crazy expensive but so far ive been really impressed with the RF lenses I have. Just a joy to use.
pretty good price though, definately could have been more
In Switzerland the 135 is permanently on backorder (today is Jan 3rd 2023).
and it´s CHF 2'314.- to 2´500.- The EF f/2L was less than half...
None are available in USA
Hello Jared great video! But it would be an great pleasure to see an side to side comparison video of 85 1.2 vs 135 1.8, and also what’s your recommendation for fashion photography which lenses should one start with, thnx in advance and always an pleasure to watch your videos!!
You take the lens hood off so you can get closer to the net and not have it effect AF.
I preordered the RF 135mm f/1.8. I can’t wait to get in my hands. For years I was on the fence on getting the EF 135 f/2.0. Not having a stabilizer and being so old was a deal breaker for me. Waiting on the 35mm f/1.4 .
IBIS helps
I own the sony 135 and I can tell you that you will love the Canon version.
I agree the 135 1.8L a must-buy, AFTER Canon gets its 35mm 1.2L to market. Until then, I’m saving my funds for a focal length that I don’t love as much, but use 5x more often
An ultimate RF 35mm 1.2L should've followed the 50/1.2 (or even get released before the 50mm) or at least come along with the 85mm 1.2. And here we are. This is quite frustrating to be honest.
I would love to see a shoot out on the Nikon, Canon and Sony 135 1.8.
Jared if obliterating the background is your goal with portraits the 135mm is the better choice. It actually gives you a shallower depth of field then the 85mm when they're wide open.
Always love your vids BTW.
always great videos. Thanks Jared for doing them. It's nice to hear straight talk, quickly, without fluff.
Great video. Commanders ripped out the Eagles hearts too!
Solid review Fro....btw the 80-200/2.8 is still a solid lens! The owner of a newspaper company in Mississippi lets me borrow his to document sports. Used on a body like the d750, d500 etc it can do damage
Can’t wait to pick mine up in a couple of weeks hopefully!!!
@7:55 ... Hahah, "Val Kilmer, a couple of years ago...." Maybe a couple of decades ago ....
"San Diaaahgo".... This is the quality all RUclips should have...
9:15 Dude you are such a pro and have been doing this so long, your eye movement is like a camera using facial recognition following the subject. Just like the Canon camera and the 135mm!
Just ordered the Sony 135mm for my collection. Jared strikes again and my lens collection grows haha
Here in Australia the GM lens is AUD$1500 cheaper than the 135L so would make it hard to justify if you were picking a system.
Once you use 135mm, you are a fan of.that focal length
I haven't seen a Fro video appear on my feed for some reason in like a year. Glad to see he's still repping Skittles so hard 😂
The EF 135 f/2L was always one of my favorite lenses - fantastic contrast and sharpness. Image always just had "the look". It will be difficult not to buy one of these.
I don't see the point yet. The IS seems pointless: 135mm is a people lens and people move, so you have to shoot at least say 1/30th, and the IBIS bodies give you 1/30th for sure with the 135mm. And every shot he's got here is 1/3200 or something anyway. So is the bokeh actually better? Resolution? Color fringing?
The good old EF 135 is mainly cheap but on modern high resolution sensor you can see it's decades old design. Sharpness is good but not excellent, focus tracking is slower and contrast and night with bright light sources isn't that great either. For those the RF is worthy upgrade, for 8K video that needs fast AF it's a must have. For the rest the EF version is still good enough.
@@jan.tichavsky I don’t own one anymore but I’d be willing to bet the images still looks good on any resolution sensor. Other than my 200 1.8, it was my favorite ancient EF L.
@@jan.tichavsky All useful information... information this stupid video didn't show us or even talk about...
I haven't shot the 135/2 on my R5 yet so I'll do some experiments later, vs. the RF100/2.8 and RF100-500. I don't think I'll get the RF but the price isn't a problem; I just don't like upgrading without knowing what exactly the improvement will be.
I have the EF 135mm f/2L that I keep on my 5ds. It was like 600 from KEH.
Regarding taking the hood off: I wish on airshows photographers (especially the pro's with their 600 f4's etc.) would also follow this mantra. Depending on where you stand and the action happens its tricky to not have some hoods in the shot. (No im sadly no VIP that gets the best spot).
Sad about Phillies. But, hey, didn't think they would get that far THIS YEAR. Next year will be awesome!
Especially since I went to Allen's yesterday and am #2 on the list for the R6 24-105 f/4 package!
Happy birthday to me!
HEY!
The 100-500 serves its purpose. Not for everything, and definately not for indoors long range situations, that f7.1 is going to kill much of your photo's quality, no matter what camera you have.
I use the 100-500 for the few sports events I have, but will invest in a 135 f1.8 to have more variety in my selections.
Been waiting for the RF 135 for a long time! The EF was one of my favourites, but sold it when I moved to R5's
Raw talk being back/ new cameras and lenses galore, It feels like back in the day early 2010’s when I’d check fros channel everyday and doesn’t disappoint, #getStephenonmorecontent tho ❤ you guys pair too well together
Keep killing it Fro! Rawtalk being back has me so working harder to build the business bigger and better
I just don‘t understand how they make their prices, in EU the Canon is 2699€ and the Sony is 1649€
I have an rf 85 1.2 DS that I love sooo much paired with my R5
Sony needs to make version 2 of 135 and just make it lighter like the new 70-200. Get it close to 50/1.2 and it will be the best 135. The image quality Is already amazing but you feel it in the hand very quickly because it's quite front heavy.
re 'Taking off one's lens hood so as to not getting in the way " ........but how about really BIG HAIR !!! LOL
You shot that image of Val Kilmer in Santiago.
Shooting with the EF 135mm f/2L on Canon 5Dsr has magic. I cannot imagine this lens with an R5.
i placed my order about a week ago, cannot wait to get it, because i absolutely love the EF version.
How is it compared to the EF135F2? Love mine. Would probably use it with an adapter if I ever go mirrorless.
EF version has no IS, no weather sealing and moderate CA, depending on the scenario. Most hands-on users have said image quality is improved over the EF version.
@@DanielFazzari cool. Thanks. IS would be welcomed. I never really had much of a CA issue, but then again, I didn’t use it in super high contrast situations.
@@AndrewCCM yeah, "CA beast" was probably harsh. I think for its age, the CA isn't terrible. I'll edit my comment.
Thank you so much Jared! Very informative review!
Thank you for excellent review👍🙏
I already have rf 28-70 f2L.Which one for best portrait work (best combo)rf 100 f2.8,rf 85 f1.2 or rf 135 f1.8?
I was waiting to see how the lens is at actions photos. Great job as always.
I just got the 50mm 1.2. I think I will have to try out the RF 135 f1.8L next
I'm waiting on the arrival of my 85mm f1.2 at the moment. my 70-200 f2.8 will have to fill in.
EF 135 f2 is still a great performer for a quarter of a price of the new RF version. So unless I'm crazy rich, I'll stick with the oldie ))
At this price point the legendary EF 200 f1.8 is a killer portrait lens tho. The separation is just unreal.
I mean, if you have the f2, paying 2,000 USD/EUR for one f stop improvement would be rather dumb not matter how rich you are.
@@nogerboher5266 I'm still rocking DSLR's)) So before that happens I'll have to waste much more than 2 000))
@@nogerboher5266 unless you need IS, weather sealing and would like to spend less time fixing CA in post.
@@DanielFazzari Almost all lenses have terrible CA issues anyways and this includes even some Zeiss, Leica and Voigtlnader lenses... Especially lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, 7Artisans, Laowa and so on... Only lenses with actual apochromatic glass elements (not coatings, actual APO glass elements) have aberrationsunder control, including the most impactful for image quality, the longitudinal aberrations.
Manufacturing APO glass is very expensive and very very hard to engineer correctly, that's why 99% of lenses either don't have APO glass at all or have poor quality APO glass just for the sake of marketing their lenses as APO. That's also why most if not all lenses with APO glass are more expensive than their non-APO counterparts in the same focal range.
Only Voigtlander, Zeiss, Hasselblad, PhaseOne and Leica make top quality APO glass. Other manufacturers who used to make APO glass for manual lenses for film and DSLR cameras are all long gone now.
Man sold my 135 2.0 before this lens was announced. I loved it but it was, at the time, my longest lens and I needed 70-200 as I entered the wedding industry.
Good video as always Jared. One thought...
R6 with 135 1,8
or
R7 with 85 1,2 (=136 mm)
Wich would you think is á better choise for 135 focal length?
Thank you for presenting this information. I'm really on the fence about whether the 135mm f/1.8 or the 24-105 f/2.8 will be my next lens. But what I'm most interested in from this video is ... would you mind sharing what AF setup are you using here? Or do you have a video that details your AF setup for the R3? I believe the I have my R3 setup close to what's in this video, but it's not quite there.
I can't get on the prime ride. I need to be able to zoom - but the images look excellent.
Perfect video! Thank you so much!
Dang, I’m over here contemplating the 28-70 f2 now maybe this
Im sure you're waiting for clearance to get your cameras back from the Artemis launch, Cant wait to see what you captured!!!
Jared have you shot much video with the RF 135 1.8 yet? The Sony 135 1.8 is my favorite lens ever and leaving it behind was the reason I hesitated returning to Canon. I shoot a 50/50 mix of images and video, mostly in low light. I've been using the R3 for 11 months now and love it. IS was the only thing missing from the Sony 135. I'm stoked that the Canon looks like its sharp wide open, but would also love to see some low light action video shot on it too. Not that it matters I guess really - I put in a pre order the day it was announced! Cheers.
Great video! How does it compare to the EF 135 f/2 L ?
But what if i;m -not- a pro?
Useless video for not contrasting with the EF 135/2 that is like 1/4 the price. The EF doesn't have IS but every shot you're taking is like 1/3200 ... as long as you have an IBIS body, you can be sure of at least three stops, getting you down to say 1/30th, and you don't want to go any slower due to subject motion anyway. So, IS in the RF 135mm is pretty pointless.
Just waiting for it to appear on Amazon for purchase... need to get my credit card points for a purchase this large
Hi Jared. Will you be doing a review of the Samyang 135/1.8 ?
Nice shots - lovely lens - awesome photographer!
Lens hood taking off: never ever, except Keystone or however is sending the photographer has an insurance paying for a new one without need for long discussions. ➡ 1:50, that guy to the left left has it on. Wise man.
I was looking so flipping forward to getting this lens. I'd been on the waiting list since December 8th but CANON CANCELED MY ORDER for no reason. I'm thinking they're having trouble with the lens or getting them out. I tried to get an answer from Canon as to what happened but it sounds like a lot of disorganization around this lens. I'm not going to order another because 1. I think there's something going wrong or they wouldn't be having issues and 2. I'd be bumped to the back of the queue.
I'm sorry to say mine copy of the RF135 has been on backorder for a long time... and no information on when it will be available.
I do believe that Canon gear is perfect. At the same time I do believe that Sony GM gear is at least on the same level as Canon but a bit cheaper. Sony135 in EU is 1600-1800€, Canon 135 is 2700-2800€
Huge difference. You can also have a Samyang 135 for Sone e-mount for 900€.
Conclusion: for me as a prosumer Sony system is just more affordable but at the same time I would love to try Canon…
How does the rf 135 do with the R5?
Nice! So happy that Samyang exists though!
Great review. Many thanks 🙏😊
Also Jared... maybe check out the Canon CN-E 135mm T2.2 L F Cinema Prime Lens (EF Mount). Is it worth it? Thanks.
Was one of your shots of Poot from The Wire? Looks just like him but i feel like u woulda called it out.
This vs ef 135 is the real comparison. Nice video and lens though
Would love to see a comparison between the canon and the sigma 😊
Unfortunately it costs 700 Dollars more in Europe... lol. 2.699€ - 2.793,75$ 😵
Hi Jared, which rf lens would you recommend for portraits/fashion photography (full body shots)? I appreciate it!!!
Thanks. Enjoyed the photos. Can you set the lens at 2.8 and get a bit more dept of field on those portraits?
Thanks again Jared! I was wondering if you were able to test the lens on another camera such as an r5. I hope it can autofocus with this lens as the r6 II did.
Hi, Jared! Thank you for your reviews! Would you please to provide the link to your video regarding of using (1,4 & 2,0 x) converters, where you recommend to professional don't use the converters? Thanks.
If someone has the 85 1.2, they may get a Canon APSC to emulate the 135 1.8 (128 1.8).
Take my money 😂😂😂😂😂 I want both and hopefully the customers will need both👍🏿🇯🇲
What is the World Series???
4:15 you make the good (if obvious) point that no-one considering the Canon 135 can even consider the Sony 135 (and vice versa) so why aren't you comparing to the EF 135/2?
I need this! I have the 85 1.2 already. I wanted to save for used super white tho lol.
Switched from Sony to Canon. Love their cameras but the RF lenses are definitely loud compared to Sony GM lenses. I have a video on my channel of the 24-70 and 85 1.2 showcasing just how noisy they are, when shooting in quiet environments... even when using a shotgun mic (Sennheiser MKE400) with the gain turned all the way down. Very surprised by this. Canon needs to upgrade their motors. Not really acceptable in 2023 considering their price (and what the competition is able to do). Other than that, they're great lenses, but just a heads up in advance, in case you do a lot of video work in quiet environments (churches, nature, etc).
I would consider myself a videographer, I do shoot photography a lot!
Should I get the 70-200 2.8 or the 135 1.8? If you had to pick one.
It probably depends on what you’ll use it for. If you have the luxury of time to compose your shot…135 all the way. If you’re running and gunning, 70-200 2.8 is probably the way to go.
I got my first L lens, the RF 50mm 1.2. I really want this lens also. I feel like I could use this instead of my tamron g2 70-200mm 2.8. Dang it... I shouldn't have watched this!
I wonder how it looks like comparing to Sigma 135 1.8... of course if Canon hasn't blocked Sigma lens yet....
