I think the implication is that the association has only certified 2,000 mages or so at this point, but of course there's more mages around that aren't members just like Frieren isn't a member. Having said that, being powerful enough to get the First Class certification is probably rare enough that most of the un-certified mages out there have zero chance of doing what Frieren is doing and simply showing up out of nowhere and taking the exam for the highest level possible. That'd be like wandering into MIT with a high school diploma in your pocket and demanding to take a really tough exam and automatically get a Phd if you pass it, all without having actually taken any classes or even graduated from a bachelor and master's degree first.
More like walking into MIT with a chunk of metal that was given to you by Aristotle.
Mage is probably a protected term, like Doctor or Licensed Electrician.
Would you know famous World War II heros from 80 years ago in our timeline? Especially since Frieren has always tried to avoid the spotlight it would follow that only older people and history nerds would have heard of her.
I've commented before that if this was the real world it would be like if Frieren showed up to get her contractor's license and when asked for her ID all she had was her member's badge from a 15th century Mason's guild.
@19:20 I'm not sure if you understood that correctly ... yeah while Lawine did encourage Kanne with words she forcefully pushed Kanne over the edge with her foot too ;).
It’s interesting to see how relative time is when talking about Frieren by the other mages in the exam, she’s probably just a story to them, and may have never seen her in their lifetime as of yet, it’s been about 80 years since the Demon King was defeated. Makes you also think about how old Kraft is and imagining no one knows him.
Frieren is famous but they dont really know what Frieren looks like specially the young ones. They know the name but not the face since most statues are Himmels. for them if could be a different Frieren and they doesnt know shes concealing her mana so it seems that this couldnt be the Frieren from the heroes party.
Thank you for sharing 😊
someone commented Wirbel is a Himmel bad boy version.
It's like you can speak Spanish but you need to take an exam and get a certificate for the university to recognize you as a Spanish using person. Here, the country recognizes this organization as the official one to give out mage certificates so whoever in that country wants to be recognized as a mage should have that certificate. That's all.
I cant help but think Kanne and Lawine's color schemes are directly referencing Gon and Killua 😂
It's another example of the Blue Oni / Red Oni character trope in Japanese media. Gon and Killua are also examples of this, as are, say, Natsu and Gray from Fairytale, or Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto.
There's a huge list on TvTropes if you particularly like this dynamic.
We're getting a little break from the heavy emotional episodes now, but all the new characters are so great. The first time I watched the series I was like "yeah, there's no way I'm gonna remember who all these new people are," and a few episodes later I was like "they're all so interesting and cool, even the ones I thought I hated!"
I especially love Kanne and Lawine (admittedly not so much in THIS episode), but I read their relationship as being in lesbians with each other and just not realizing it yet. Or... Lawine probably does, but is too proud to admit it to herself. In any case, I know not everyone agrees with that interpretation, but keep an eye on them and see if you agree. I think you'll pick up on the same vibes I did. I have a really specific hypothesis about their dynamic, but it won't come up for a while so I'll save it and use it to feed the algorithm when that episode pops up.
Fun video as always. Thanks again for sharing with us. :)
I think there's a lack of mages due to the fighting against the demons. We know that 1,000 years ago the Demon King was ordering a genocide against the elves. I assume it was done so there weren't be any long lived mages on the side of humanity that could challenge demons. Then, it's only been about 80 years since he was defeated. That's only a couple of generations, so there probably hasn't been enough time for the population to recover enough for there to be a large number of human mages.
I think it's more that there's just not as much need for mages, so not as many people are learning magic.
Fern she who can block out half the Himmel from Frieren
kanne and lawine's relationship definitely feels complex, looking forward to seeing more. definite hunter x hunter vibes from this arc so far, hope it can be just as good!
10:41 that's a face 😏
10:30 "hello..." It's so funny how every female reacting to Frieren instantly loves this guy.
Not mocking you btw, I get it. He oozes the confidence and arrogance of the hot bad boy.
He's designed like he belongs in Fairy Tale.
