35 years ago in 1982 this song was everywhere. All the best days are so far in the past and cannot be relived again. I want or relive the best parts of the past with good people before my time is up. Goodbye John Wetton and thank you for the music.
We partied stupid. Best year for a lot of reasons. Do not believe the best is over. It is just not on a daily basis like then. The beauty of perspective is I realize them now when they happen.
U r correct about this song. & this in my opinion is off of one of the greatest albums of the 80's. Had it on cassette and u were forced to listen to it all back then & I think that made me appreciate music more back then by listening to the whole album.
I remember when Asia came out. My brother bought their debut album and I loved the songs. This is a favorite. I could sing along with this song. Thank goodness for Asia and their songs. 80s were the best decade for music
+todd brooks I was also one of the fortunate ones that grew up and experienced all this music before and during that era. I remember all the videos and releases. That's when new music releases really meant something. It just has lost the magic it once had. But those were great times to be alive.
+Danley Nemorin There is indeed a fair amount of good music to be found in the 80s. More so in the first half of the decade, as somewhat of an overflow of the 70s, but by and large, rock began to spiral downward in the latter half, and rapidly by the time the 90s arrived, then on to its quick demise via corporate stranglehold. As for rock n roll, and/or rock, and pop, the definitive, widely documented consensus refers to the period from about 1955, to the early 70s as the Golden Age. It was the pinnacle, most important, most creative, innovative, and exciting epoch, with the mid 60s to early 70s broadly considered to be a renaissance in music and pop culture.
Lucky was me to watch a concert in Spain, in 2008, w/ the classic Asia line up: Wetton/Howe/Downes/Palmer. I love all 4, they are the masters! But have to admit that John Wetton became my music hero since I was 30 or something. R.I.P. buddy, miss you forever.
In loving memory of John Wetton In 82 this song came out around the time we graduated and we were wondering about our future and what lay ahead. Only time will tell...
Timothy and Sugar, I am also Class of 1982 graduate, I was very scared when I graduated because I was the first in my entire family to graduate from high school and had no idea where to go or what to do next!! This was not the case for most of my closest friends, they had older brothers, sisters, cousins to offer them some advice/guidance. Oh well, it is what it is!!
Definitely can relate. Class of 82 also and first in my family to graduate. I had the same feeling of being lost and no one to advise me and it was a struggle finding a crummy job having no connections. This album really reminds me of that time. I wasted so much time worrying about my future when I was young but now that I no longer worry about the future I am no longer young.
Asia (1982) keyboard player Geoff Downes and lead singer/bass player John Wetton... You're leaving now It's in your eyes There's no disguising it It really comes as no surprise To find that you planned it all along I see it now Becomes so clear Your insincerity And me all starry-eyed You'd think that I would have known by now Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky The lie is over Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over CHORUS: Only time will tell One thing is sure That time will tell Only time will tell If you were wrong The brightest ring around the moon Will darken when I die Now sure as the sun will cross the sky The lying's over Gone, like the tears that used to tide me over You're leaving now It's in your eyes There's no disguising it It really comes as no surprise To find that you planned it all along Only time will tell I see it now, become so clear Only time will tell Your insincerity And me all starry-eyed You'd think that I would have known by now Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky The lie is over Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over Only time will tell You're on your own inside your room Only time will tell You're claiming victory You were just using me And there is no one you can use now Only time will tell One thing is sure...
John Wetton, deepest respect. So much thoughtful, soulful music you've shared. When I first heard "Only Time Will Tell" there was nothing like it on the radio, or anywhere on the musical landscape, really. No one saw ASIA coming (certainly not in America); they simply banded, stepped out and made a tremendous impact. Perhaps because of his renown as a bassist, Wetton remains an underrated vocalist, but I always loved hearing him sing and play. Such a loss. I am grieved. God bless you John Wetton.
RIP John Wetton Co-Founder of Asia (Singer, songwriter, Bassist). The songs: Only Time Will Tell, Don't Cry and The Smile Has Left Your Eyes from Asia are etched upon my heart. Never was nor will be music like this ever again. Thank you for the wonderful music John Wetton.
This was one of my favorite songs growing up as a kid in the early 80s, and when I heard it playing MGSV I freaked the fuck out. Like, how did a song by Asia, of all bands, make it into a 2015 AAA video game? Mind blown.
+megatroll - the people who "grew up" w this song are near 50 or older now, like kojima who is 52, right in the middle of the range of people who would have heard this song then. Any 30s people were either not born yet or babys
John Petersen - its pretty clear kojima likes the tune as nostalgia, him being in college at the time. I wish he would the older true progressive of the early to mid 70s instead of this 80s neo prog pop rock, but he was too young. Our high school and college years imprint strong musical memories.
RIP Big fella. One of the greatest rock singers of all time and will be sorely missed by myself and millions of others.Bloody good bassist and songwriter as well.
I've been huge into "Only Time Will Tell" and Asia since I was 6 or 7 years old and heard this song when it first came out. I already had heard a lot of music even though I was that young, but this was something completely new. Later on in high school and after high school and still today I'm big into Yes, King Crimson, ELP (RIP Keith Emerson horrible loss), UK, all of those bands and progressive rock. The more I hear Asia the less I think they strayed away from prog rock. They're something higher and stronger than a lot of what else was successful then and no commercial rock sell out band were gonna write songs as dark as the songs on their first album. This song is about being hurt deeply in a relationship and it ending in mutual hatred because of lies and backstabbing. I've experienced that and I particularly love the line at the end "And There Is No One You Can Use Now."
Asia was the best of the supergroups to come out of the '80s and their video for Only Time Will Tell has held up quite nicely over the past 34 years...always loved that image of the gymnast making slow motion leaps over the tvs...
Many years after first hearing this song, I realized something they said several times in this song- Sure as the sun will "cross" the sky. That is Biblical, the Bible does say that the sun "races across the sky like an athlete", comes round and once again races "across" the sky. The sun moves, not earth around the sun. Not likely Asia meant to quote scripture, but doing so they spoke Truth. All these years and I didn't even realize this. Very cool. Shout out from Toronto Kanada.
I literally dream about this song and I was probably six months old when it was popular. This song summarizes so many things for me, I don't know why. So many things from the 50s-80s speak strongly to me of a purer, more innocent, more sensible time that feels more real to me than some things in the modern world. Which is why I moved back to a small town in the woods....
"You're claiming victory You were just using me And there is no one you can use now" Driving home in '82 after college girlfriend and I had broken up. This song comes on. This line always stuck with me.

Part of my teenage world. Love this song! We had albums -and the kids are getting back into that sound. CD, just does not sound the same. They can take all the scratches out, but this is a sound that you cannot reproduce!

Found it at last. It took Keith Emerson's demise...I recall very well the 2-day shoot for this video at Keith Ewart's studios. Directed by Godley and Creme who used to start each day with a jazz woodbine for breakfast and continue all day. I was the technical manager responsible for setting up these monitors and the 16 synchronised cameras which fed them. It was pretty obvious for all kinds of reasons that it wasn't a very good idea and now, over 33 years later I finally see that I was right about that - not least because daylight colour balanced monitors shot in studio tungsten lighting look blue (obviously) - and crap.

This was one of my leaving-home songs. "You're leaving now...only time will tell" perfectly captured the anticipation/sadness/apprehension I felt leaving my parents' home near Cleveland, Ohio and traveling 1200 miles to Dallas, Texas.

Born in the 90s yet I love 80s music! I think that was the period were music peaked and now we are on a downward spiral. So yeah its 2019 I am 25 and I love this music more than anything that plays on the radio.
Asia was the first arena rock band's music that I fell in love with growing up. To this day, I still love every album they produced. John Wetton was a fantastic musician and the world is now a little worse off without his talent. :( He left great music behind, and we fans are eternally grateful.
I didn't know people thought this was cheesy. Maybe I'm a cheesy person but the emotion in the 70s and 80s is so raw that the music is so easy to relate with. It's very endearing.
Awsome Video I remember when I first saw this on Mtv in 1981 When Mtv was all about the music. Super group Asia pure rock talent: Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jhon Wetton of Uria Heep, Steve Howe and Geoff Downes both of Yes. Powerfully smooth voicals and timeless driven sound, something lost in todays corperately driven music wasteland.
I'm literally almost in tears right now. I became a rabid fan of Asia after watching this video on a Sunday in 1986 and it made me want to become a musician. Thanks John, and RIP.

What a great song! It brings back so many memories of better times. RIP John. You had such a heavenly voice that was underappreciated on this earth...
Every generation says this, but there is no better music than what the eighties produced!!!
And there never will be.

This song helped me through my Divorce and I'm so thankful for Asia and their songs
The 1960's, 70's and 80's had the best music ever! No doubt about it. Those decades had the best musicians and singers.
Love this song. I was only a fourth grader in elementary school when it was released, and listening to it totally takes me back to that time.
Uma voz inesquecível. e letras maravilhosas !!!!!!
In loving memory of John Wetton

Why can't there be more awesome music like this now? The stuff from the 80s had so much more power to it

You're leaving now
It's in your eyes
There's no disguising it
It really comes as no surprise
To find that you planned it all along
I see it now
Becomes so clear
Your insincerity
And me all starry-eyed
You'd think that I would have known by now
Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky
The lie is over
Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over
CHORUS:
Only time will tell
One thing is sure
That time will tell
Only time will tell
If you were wrong
The brightest ring around the moon
Will darken when I die
Now sure as the sun will cross the sky
The lying's over
Gone, like the tears that used to tide me over
You're leaving now
It's in your eyes
There's no disguising it
It really comes as no surprise
To find that you planned it all along
Only time will tell
I see it now, become so clear
Only time will tell
Your insincerity
And me all starry-eyed
You'd think that I would have known by now
Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky
The lie is over
Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over
Only time will tell
You're on your own inside your room
Only time will tell
You're claiming victory
You were just using me
And there is no one you can use now
Only time will tell
One thing is sure...

To think that I would have known by now
Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky
This lie is over
Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over
[Chorus:]
(Only time will tell)
One thing is sure
That time will tell
(Only time will tell)
If you were wrong
The brightest ring around the moon
Will darken when I die
[Chorus:]
Repeat first verse
Repeat second verse
[Chorus:]
(Only time will tell)
You're on your own
Inside your room
(Only time will tell)
You're claiming victory
You were just using me
And there is no one you can use now
(Only time will tell)
One thing is sure
That time will tell...

Born in the 90s yet I love 80s music! I think that was the period were music peaked and now we are on a downward spiral. So yeah its 2019 I am 25 and I love this music more than anything that plays on the radio.
So...I'm in the car with my 17 1/2 yr old and this is what's on his song list. Proud Mama! Had to share.
You look like a kid yourself.🌸
Lori Helm, no, you raised her right.
Asia was the first arena rock band's music that I fell in love with growing up. To this day, I still love every album they produced. John Wetton was a fantastic musician and the world is now a little worse off without his talent. :( He left great music behind, and we fans are eternally grateful.
It wasn't cheesy back then, that's how it was back in th day. Sure 30 years later its cheezy, but the songs great.
I didn't know people thought this was cheesy. Maybe I'm a cheesy person but the emotion in the 70s and 80s is so raw that the music is so easy to relate with. It's very endearing.
jason75, and I love this video! This makes it 2.1 gazillion times BETTER than "Heat of the Moment".
What an elite band.Nobody sounded like them.RIP John Wetton. Can't believe him and Greg Lake are gone.
what a rough year it has been for Prog Rock. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and now John Wetton. :-(
RIP John Wetton. And thanks for this amazingly awesome song!
May John Wetton Rest In Peace.
May the Lord God have it in a good place .
*Raises his coffee*
That´s for sure!
Hitchin A' Ride how did he die
Orlando Ramos he had cancer.
I'm here cause I love this and I went to this concert in the 80s Toto and Asia. It was awesome in Nashville at the then new symphony hall
R.I.P. John Wetton.
John Wetton's voice was all kinds of awesome! R.I.P.
One of *the greatest* songs (any genre) of all time. ... Criminally underrated.
ONLY TIME WILL TELL
PERO LA MÚSICA QUEDA COMO UN GRAN RECUERDO y así será como té recordaremos por siempre
RIP JOHN WENTTON [ Asia ]

Lost like the tears that use to tie me over......... glad she is gone .... this song helped me get on... with my life.
So sad to hear the news. RIP John Wetton. Your music will live on!
I remember when this was a staple of the stable of songs from MTV back in the early 80s.
''Be careful down there Boss''
+Reynard Porche Rad Game!
Any other helicopter song is a sin.
+Jhon Doe HAHA, i second that, although take on me is an exception.
+Reynard Porche My girlfriend says that to me during foreplay.
+Reynard Porche ?????
I'm literally almost in tears right now. I became a rabid fan of Asia after watching this video on a Sunday in 1986 and it made me want to become a musician. Thanks John, and RIP.
