Leorio may be hot headed, but he really does love his friends. It is messed up nobody contacted Mito and let her know what is going on with Gon. She raised that boy herself and he is close to death's door, but nobody contacted her at all.
I mean, why would anyone do that? She, or anyone she knows, wouldn't be able to do anything from the island, or at all for that matter. Why put that overwhelming burden on her shoulders? I mean, he wasn't dead. All she'd do is spend hours on end crying and drowning herself in depression.

Yes, it will suck, but most people would rather know if their loved ones are hospitalized than to be kept out of it and find out later. Plus, the boy is in critical condition. He could easily die. It makes way more sense to tell his family on Whale Island and bring them here so they can at least visit Gon and possibly spend his last moments with him just in case.
