Though, to be honest, if we _really_ wanted to be historically accurate, Pocahontas would actually be a twelve-year-old girl... and voiced by a twelve-year-old girl.
And nice that the romance is more believable, especially since these two actually get married in real life.

No it wasn’t. The “romance” between Poca and Rolfe is honestly one of the fakest I’ve ever seen in my entire life. All he does is spend the ENTIRE movie trying to get Pocahontas to fit his definition of a perfect English lady instead of being in love with who she truly is like Smith did. Plus, he’s the one who almost dies in the first movie saving her dad from being shot. Rolfe literally doesn’t even try to save her until Smith dragged his a** to the dungeon. Rolfe was a sexist jerk who didn’t deserve Pocahontas and I frankly don’t give a crap about historical accuracy, especially when you consider Rolfe was NOT a great person in reality.

The problem I have is the historical accuracy thing. Disney's version of this story is based on a tall tale from John Smith. It's going to have inaccuracies. Every Disney movie does. In The Princess and the Frog, for instance. Voodoo is a real world religion with varied and complex beliefs. It is not just good and evil magic where a gumbo pot replaces a witch's cauldron. Then there's Aladdin. Question: what is the Taj Mahal doing in Baghdad? Also, I doubt you would lose your hand for stealing food. But Pocahontas was a real person. Yes, and so was Davy Crockett. How factual was that portrayal? Cool Runnings is about a real Olympic team. Disney decided their coach was banned from the Olympics for cheating and stripped of his medals. That didn't happen.

Honestly, this one is a guilty pleasure. I LOVE the first movie, and I know this movie is a downgrade compared to it. But, as you said, there are some genuinely good moments. The scene with Pocahontas and Nakoma chokes me up a bit, I enjoy the song Where Do I Go From Here, and the scene with Pocahontas defending the bear is pretty powerful. But, there are moments that make me cringe, and I hate the ending. I know they wanted to be historically accurate, but I was way more invested in her relationship with John Smith.
As for my suggestion for a Disney sequel/midquel/prequel to review, I suggest Bambi 2. If you're looking for a movie with genuine moments that doesn't suck so bad, I suggest checking it out. It continues from when Bambi just lost his mother, so they dive into how he feels about that, and how his relationship with his father is. I feel like it's one of the better Disney sequel/midquel/prequels.

@@PaulieAFantoneJays19 actually Pocahontas 2 remains to be one of the most hated sequels, despite it has grown a very small following. It’s actually pretty hard for me to find someone who likes Rolfe better as a love interest for Pocahontas. John Smith was always my favorite Disney Prince alongside Aladdin, but it’s really sad how much hate his character specifically gets nowadays. And its ALWAYS “John Smith was a terrible man in reality who was not a good person towards Pocahontas or her people” like 99% of his hate and the movie’s is history related and how tragic Pocahontas’s real life actually was. Even I’ll agree I don’t what the hell Disney was thinking trying to make Poca and John a couple, or at the very least not realizing how this would eventually come to seriously bite them in the butt later. Pocahontas as a movie holds a very special place in my heart ever since I was a kid, and it pains me so much to see how many people have gradually started to hate it and straight up scorn it for being basically a middle finger to Native American culture. I mean, Esmerelda and Jasmine aren’t exactly great representatives for Romani or Arabian culture either.
I definitely agree the movie isn’t perfect and isn’t even my favorite Disney movie, but it’s actually my third. I always found myself falling in love with how Pocahontas and John Smith did. They had actual growth and more maturity than most couples do, and I admire their undying love for each other, perfectly shown in the deleted song If I Never Knew You. It perfectly portrays how much John has matured as a person because of his love for Pocahontas and would be so empty and sad if he never met her. I really believe if the song stayed in the original version, more people would be more forgiving of the historical details and just enjoy it as a fictional movie. I seriously don’t get why John Smith gets so much hate nowadays, specifically being called an arrogant jerk who calls her people savages and would’ve shot her if she wasn’t beautiful, but proceed to forget how much this dude changes and clearly does deeply regret how he viewed people like her before meeting her and learning an important lesson about being more accepting of another’s beliefs and views. But seeing the other deleted scenes and stuff, Pocahontas had so much potential to be something waay stronger than what we got. I know a lot of people don’t really care for it mainly because it’s “too boring/serious” and while I get that, I found it ironic Hunchback had much darker themes and somehow managed to be funnier (not counting the gargoyles) I always kinda wished they made Pocahontas and John more humorous when it came to their relationship instead of using it on Esmerelda and Phoebus. Poca and John are both more laidback people who enjoy teasing others and learning new things, and I can definitely see them having a lot of fun together. It would definitely show how they manage to make each other laugh and relax in the midst of the threat of war.
But anyways, if Disney had been smart the first time around and not based it on a real person and just changed their names, Pocahontas could’ve easily been a huge hit and regarded as a masterpiece like all the other Renaissance movies. It’s just sad seeing how poorly this movie has aged for a lot of people and tanked to the levels of actual abysmal movies like Chicken Little or Home on the Range. Nearly every ranking of the Renaissance I’ve seen ALWAYS has Pocahontas towards the bottom or dead last. And while it definitely is not a surprise and something I’ve just come to accept, its just really discouraging and frustrating to see how one of my favorite Disney movies isn’t even close to the levels of Beauty and The Beast (one I personally find very flawed in so many ways) Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and especially Lion King. It honestly irritates me how Aladdin is still praised in high regard when it’s pretty racist with Middle Eastern culture, and for whatever reason people don’t have a problem with Aladdin lying the whole movie just to win Jasmine’s love. I definitely love them as a couple, but I personally wouldn’t be able to date someone who lied about everything just to impress me.
Sorry that was long lol. I just wish one day more people will come to appreciate Pocahontas for what its trying to teach instead of constantly being scorned and hated for what it isn’t. I understand representation is important to how kids will view other kids from different backgrounds, and unfortunately Indigenous culture is one of the most ignored. But even Brother Bear wasn’t exactly accurate when it came to Inuit culture or the bear myth, which was actually an Iroquois legend

@@PaulieAFantoneJays19 IKR? If anything, one of the most underrated Disney deaths is from the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the intro. A Romani mother runs for her life with her baby clenched in her arms, and she begs the cathedral to give her sanctuary, only for Frollo to catch up, rip her baby from her arms and KICKS her on the stairs, instantly killing her. Then Frollo, horrified of poor Quasi’s deformities, goes to a well and gets dangerously close to drowning the baby. It’s only when the archdeacon realizes what has happened and chastises him for his cruelty that Frollo is basically scared into raising the baby as his own to atone for his sins. I know Quasi’s parents only appeared for like two minutes and didn’t have any unique role aside being Quasi’s parents, but Frollo does lie about his mother hating her son and abandoning him at the church. Its only when Frollo has lost all sanity and is determined to kill both Quasi and Esmerelda he finally reveals he completely lied about his mother and she died protecting him from him. Its honestly so shocking and sad to see something that dark straight off the bat in a Disney movie.

@@kristinahuchison2511 ...Yeah, I know, that was awful when I saw all of that happening in the beginning of the film ...Frollo was a really dark villain.
Tony Jay did a great job voicing Frollo & made me hate Frollo's guts as a kid too haha

@@PaulieAFantoneJays19 that’s exactly what I mean lol. Lately the Hunchback of Notre Dame has grown considerably in popularity lately, and I’ve seen a lot of RUclipsrs rank it on the same levels as its predecessors aside Pocahontas. And it’s largely because of the maturity in the movie you appreciate more as an adult. But whenever people complain about Pocahontas being a terrible movie because its based on a very terrible story, I think a lot of people don’t realize how dark the novel of Notre Dame is. I’m pretty sure some of it is based on real life events too, considering its sister Les Miserables consists of real life accounts in the filler areas. I really enjoy the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but a lot of the characters are actually bad guys, like Phoebus, Clopin and even Quasi isn’t this kind hearted “monster” he’s actually kinda a grump in the book

I would to say that yes affirmative. If you know history like Me you can all agree with me that yes for historical films like these you really shouldn't make any of nosecones Sh*t up because making crap like this inaccurate is disrespectful in any in like COD Vanguard Pocahontas 2 is good example of complete utter butchered historically inarticulately nonsense piece of shit .

    • @kristinahuchison2511

Ok, I mean almost every Disney movie is supremely inaccurate to the original story. The Little Mermaid dies in her story, Hunchback is straight up dark with everyone dying in the end, Hercules is straight up not for kids, and there’s a lot of others. Pocahontas is NOT the first inaccurate movie. Even Anastasia is pretty darn inaccurate to the actual story of Anastasia, and her movie doesn’t get nearly as much criticism or hate

Parker...Jesse from Codedlockfilms certainly said it best when this topic comes up...Disney shouldn't be chastised for making movies that aren't faithful to the source material...as it should be the job of parents & teachers to educate kids in real life events & if we're allowing kids to get they're facts from Disney movies, that's the fault of the parents/guardian more than Disney or the movie itself (Just my two cents here)
