  • Glaciation is one of the most fascinating natural features in the Alps and is currently an integral part of the Alpine scenery. Glaciers are literally rivers of frozen ice that slowly flow downhill. As they move downwards they grind into the mountains and rip them apart. Glaciers are the most effective short-term agent in shaping the mountain landscape. But alpine glaciers are melting at quite a pace and many may soon disappear.
During the cold phases of the Ice Age (which occurred between 2.5 million years ago to about 10,000 year ago with a series of cold phases with interspersed warmer ‘inter-glacial’ phases) glaciers covered a much greater proportion of the Alps than they do today. The Alps are essentially a post-glacial landscape. The rapid present day rate of warming, due to human-induced global warming, is extending the area of post-glacial landscapes in the Alps.
