If the emperor has indeed become a true god of the warp in the past 10k years, then he may be able to wrench lost human souls from the chaos gods. In fact, I theorise that that would be the true meaning of ‘the emperor protects’. Then what is a miserable life of servitude in a hive, to an eternity in the bliss of the emperors light protected from the horrors of the warp?
You might also have mentioned the case of the traitor White Scars during the Horus Heresy, who did not turn to the worship of the Ruinous Powers, but DID swear a soul-binding oath to support Horus and try to convert the rest of their legion. In the end, Jagahtai was forced to sentence them to death in combat to expunge their shame.
That was amazing. They gladly gave their lives for their primarch bc they knew that only in death they would be cleansed of their shame. I truely felt for them but on the other hand what they did was nothing but badass!
Magnus did wrong lol don't act like he didn't do any mistakes lol he even admitted he had no other way to do what he had to do but through disobeying the Edict of Nikea and of course disobeying it's enforcer and creator, The Big E
Perhaps. Remember, by this point in the timeline, probably most Chaos Marines are not from the HH era - they were made from children captured, or even bred, by the traitor Legion/Chapter/Warband they are part of. They never personally *turned away* from the Emperor's Light, as it were, they never had a chance to be in it. I think they might be redeemed if they turned away from Chaos, actually *seeking* the Emperor's Light and service to the Imperium.
Most traitor legionnairies are still from the HH era. That's kinda the point of what is miserable about them, they keep fighting, and some that are dead even come back because there is no time in the warp and can be brought again and again.
Actually no, the chaos legions/chapters cannot replenish their forces by recruiting/capturing kids, their domain is the warp and the only reinforcements they have are chaos demons. Chaos space marine legions are slowly shrinking , not every Chaos marine gets brought back after they die, their chaos gods send their souls to eternal punishment simply because they failed to live and slay their enemies.
Jon, They totally replenish their ranks with gene seed. There are plenty of planets they can shake down for children, or populations of slaves on their vessels to recruit from. There's a video on this very channel that goes on about the subject, even mentioning that the World Eaters' apothecaries run a eugenics program to breed higher quality slaves.
@@JabberwockOclock What this guy said, while making new marines from scratch is difficult, a raid that obtains viable geneseeds from a loyalist chapter certainly can be used to create new chaos marines who will, naturally, be given training and armed as per their chaos force's inclinations. Some will also draft/recruit renegade marines that enter the eye as squads or whole chapters that have gone rogue as long as they hit that sweet spot of "competent enough that we want them but not so competent that we'd have to kill them for trying to take over the recruiter's rank in the legion before we can get proper use out of them". Another way is to conscript from other legions... Abaddon's black legion is rather known for doing this and most of the "cult marines" serving in his legion are indeed draftees taken by making warbands of said cult-marines swear allegiance to Abby (or suffer a very painful and unmercyful end). A notable exception to the above would be the thousand sons, but those can be re-forged, its just a question of how much of the original enchanted suit and/or dust you have to work with vs how many souls you'll have to sacrifice to get a shiny new dust-bucket.
Read the shroud of night and sons of hydra they are committed to being loyalist and not out against the imperium and still mostly against there original enemy the primordial annihilators
@Tigran Abazyan to the now overly religious zealous and extremist imperium with twisted ideals? As if they would 1 accept it, 2 care, 3 not attempt to kill the Alpha Legion for all they ahev done previously
Its a nice hint in Dark Imperium novel, where it says how the Scythe of Mortarion is still untaintes, uncorrupted by chaos.the steel is still pure, still shiny.basicaly its the last piece of Mortarion belongings, what still contains his humanity, and its a remainder for him of his life before the heresy. I think deep inside mortarion seeks redemption, he hates nurgle and he hates that he is a pawn of a chaos god. If the Emperor would awake one day, and if they would talk, i see a chance for redemption for Mortarion. Same for Magnus, who never wanted to be a traitor, but was forced to flee into the eye of terror. Angron has every right to hate his father. The only way to save Angron, is to ressurect somehow his fallen comrades lost in the last battle on Nuceria, and tell him personally that he is sorry about it. Then and only then is a little chance to redeem Angron. Lorgar though is a treacharous piece of shit, and deserves no redemption. The night hauntera are simple maniacs, psychopats. And Fullgrim was lost when he killed Ferrus.
Angron is too angry to change, too spiteful, too stubborn. Even with the Emperor resurrecting his people and saying he is sorry will not change him back. Guilliman even said THIS to him. Yeah the Emperor has been a dick to him but that doesn't mean he has to do the same to his sons. Saying he hates politician like in Nuceria because of what they did to him when he is just repeating what they done to him now to his own sons and imagine if the Emperor didn't beam him and somehow he manages to survive, An entire populace of Nuceria equipped or forcefully, surgically attached with the FUCKING NAILS and his own tactic of throwing his sons in the battlefield like replaceable Automatons is fucked up.
I know that people don't like me bringing AoS lore into 40k but the nature of souls and Chaos are the same in both universes so its relevant. There is actually a well documented case of a soul that is corrupted by Chaos being redeemed in the story of Tornus the Redeemed. Apologies in advance for such a long comment. Tornus was a proud warrior and follower of Sigmar who's tribe fell victim to a Nurgle invasion where he was unfortunately taken alive, tortured for months, and eventually turned to the worship of Nurgle out sheer desperation. He was renamed Torglug the Despised and would rise up the ranks of his war band till he was one of the most powerful Nurgle's Chaos Lords in the realm and spread havoc for centuries in the name of Chaos. Torglug would experience a sort of crisis of faith when Sigmar's forces eventually reclaimed the realm and Torglug himself was struck down by Sigmar's avatar, the Celestant Prime. However, instead of going to the realm of Chaos like all other champions who failed the Dark Gods, Torglug found himself before Sigmar who saw his doubts and the disgust he felt deep down and deemed him worthy of absolution. Sigmar then purified Torglug's soul back into Tornus using powerful magic and resurrected him as a Stormcast Eternal (demigod) in order to fight for redemption. So in conclusion, I would say that a Chaos Marine could be redeemed in both body, mind, and soul but it would require both the marine to want to be redeemed AND a god-tier amount of power to break their connection to the Dark Gods and repair their corrupted bodies.
I've worked on a fanfic where a chaos marine redeemed himself. He never rejoined the imperium of man he merely accepted that though he'd never be among his brothers again he could at least help them from behind enemy lines. His only companion being a lay priestess he saved from slavers with a severely damaged psyke. They travel doing small things to give hope to people born within the territories of chaos. I know it sounds way too positive for 40k but hey it was fanfiction and I had fun with the idea :) Redeemable or not I like the idea that maybe a little hope can still save them
Hi! I know it’s probably too late to ask, but I’ll do it anyway, do you remember the name of that fanfic? It seems really interesting and I would like to read it!
I still want Hashut to not only return but also transcend to 40K as the Chaos God of the Dark Mechanicus. It would be more of a weaker God, likely defeated by the C'tan Dragon in the past and often coerced (by threats) to serve the Big 4.
I don't think it is a matter of if they can be redeemed, but more of how could they be. Like what would they have to do, undergo, or endure to be redeemed. This would make it that some of the chapters that were not as corrupted might have to do something pretty understandable, but than others that were vastly more corrupted an turned from the emperor would have to do/undergo things nearly impossible. Imagine what they would have to do to reclaim their soul, fighting to a place in the warp that might hold their soul an reclaim it for instance.
Counter point (very crude lore for my cell) Alpha legion splinter cell taking control of some planets post failure of chaotic success leading to chaos downfall Raises army under the old rule of the emperor (alpha legion put a lot of time and effort into there mortals) Gathers info on the imperium wile fighting against chaos. Changes names and banners into the serpent crusaders. Wrights really convincing lies and shotty lore for the imperial fists to find suggesting they are a splinter of the black templars. Obtain gene seed for making it official in testing. Run right under the banner of those who killed alpharius and wait for omegons call.
Now I want a story about a Chaos Space Marine chapter going to war against their own patron god, either out of spite, a misguided sense that they can somehow "beat" their chaos god, or a genuine, unexpected change of heart. They'd be doomed to fail and face unholy punishment from their chaos god, but the battle leading to that grim end would be extraordinary.
When someone pledges their soul to Chaos one cannot be redeemed and you couldn’t trust them again even if they had “a change of heart”. The only thing to do is give them a good blamming in the head
speaking of Magnus, there that that band of 1000 sons who were swayed back after that speech by that one remaining loyalist Emperors Children dreadnaught. Admittedly they all killed themselves shortly afterwards to destroy Fulgrim (or at least That Daemon that was still possessing his now mutated original body and left his soul inside a certain painting whilst blatantly lying to Horus that he was free. (I still think that a certain clone currently in Stasis really has a fragment of Fulgrims original uncorrupted soul.
Are you talking about Rylanor, Vistario and his crew? Vistario and The Boys were 1k Sons legionnaires sent to Isstvan III to check out Rylanors beacon for Fulgrim, who was Blammed (tm) back into the warp by Rylanors improvised virus bomb (everyone else was killed)
I love how TTS has broken literally every single comment section about wh40k with references. It might well be the best thing to have happened to the whole IP of GW in AT LEAST A decade.
Ok, I know you get a ton of comments but I dont know if you have covered this topic: Fabius Bile - what is he really trying to do? What if Bile is trying to reverse engineer the Emperor? If you have a video on it please let me know. If not, wanna make one? Lol
It ultimately depends upon whether you are querying if they can truly be "redeemed" of their taint (as in re-enter the protection which had they'd previously known under the Emperor's light gleaming upon their Body & Soul (Almost, universally answered in the negative) or if they can merely come to an accepting of something nearing remorse or at the very least regret, and decide merely to find a form of "Name Redemption" a cleansing upon their tarnished legacy, or honor (but, lacking the possibility of ever purifying their bodies or soul of it's inabsolvable taint) purchased only through atonement by acting against their patrons with honest contrition. Defying their dread host for the Emperor although, knowing it's in spite of their souls remaining forever forfeit regardless. (This, although very much possible... it's a choice that's extremely unlikely to be made... and even more an unquestionably daunting road to set down upon even for an Adeptus/Legionnaires Astartes.) Compound this further, most Astartes who have followed the eight-fold path far enough to be declared excommunicate traitorous have like fallen far beyond caring about their legacy or perceived honor within Imperial Archives or by remembrancers let alone even considering or more laughably succumbing to something they'd consider as universally hindering as remorse...
Can Traitor Astartes Ever Be Redeemed? Yes, with a good old bolt round to the head. *Thanks everyone, that's all.* _now report to your nearest Inquisitor_
There is no doubt a minor chaos god in the image of the emperor, even chaos space marines, so long as they haven’t already been claimed, could find redemption by swearing fealty to it. Thinking about it that would be a good backstory for the Legion of the Damned, it would certainly explain the name.
If a corrupted astartes were to sit in a jail cell guarded by Sisters of Silence for a prolonged period of time, what would happen? Would that be enough to squeeze the warp out of him?
World Eaters: Khorne Berzerkers Emperor's Children: Noise Marines Death Guard: Plague Marines Did the Thousand Sons become anything specific/get a unique name or are they still just called the Thousand Sons?
Well, there was this little chapter way back when called the soul drinkers...They so dipped their ceramite toes into the mutative end of the chaos pool but they never did lose their loyalty to the Big E himself. Even getting their name etched into the black haul of the Phalanx itself
What is this heresy? By the emperor, even thinking about this is outlawed by the ordo hereticus! If you were not an Inquisitor, this would have gotten you into a lot of trouble! Great video btw, really enjoyed it
In a book called Chaos World, a traitor astartes of I believe the Word Bearers legion who is so corrupted he has eyes all over his armour, cuts all of it off, and blows up the planet in order to redeem himself. He goes with the planet, but it's interesting to think of how many would return to the emperor of man if they didn't need to blow themselves up.
The fact that Parmenides, the philosopher that stated that movement is but an illusion and that unchanging and unmovable order was the Arke of the universe, became a daemon of the lord of unmoving order is a delightful easter egg
I was going to make the argument that a person of devout enough faith, such as a living saint, could purge the taint of chaos from a corrupted marine if they were truly repentant. But if a fully corrupted individual's soul belongs to their patron god, it sounds like the ONLY person that could truly free them would be the Emperor Himself. Maybe if the Emperor would be to regain more of His consciousness and power, He could barter with/battle the gods for His faithful's souls, much like Chegorach does with Slaanesh.
That was so cool hearing about the loyalists fighting along side traitors would like t hear more. Would like to hear about the new prophet of the night Lords DECIMUS think he could end up being the most badass chaos Lord yet.
Yes, with the emperors peace. but they wont find peace, they sold their soul long before and will only continue to live their afterlife suffering the same torments they inflicted on others.
It's weird to think The Night Lords, a traitor legion known to cosplay as Necron Flayers, are *more* forgivable than the Thousand Sons, who are as mild as it gets for Chaos Legion.
I'm pretty sure it said in one of the Gathering Storm books that Magnus would repent in order to save the Rubrics - something which Yvrainne DOES almost right after.
SM chapters gather around discussing about redemption Ultra "They have forsaken and once is enough, they can only be redeemed by a bolter to the head!" Salamanders "Perhaps they have seen their faulty ways, perhaps they may redeem themselves again" Iron First "Only if they sacrifice the entire Iron Warriors traitor chapter we will allow" Space Wolves "Over our dead bodies" Blood Angels ... *Stealing others Relics* "Wha..What yall say?"
I don’t know for Space Marine but in the Konrad Curze Primarch book (spolier ahead) The Emperor tells him that all the fallen Primarch are not behind redemption. So maybe if a primarch can do it, his sons can also in an extent do it. Be it, it would require a space marine with extraordinary will.
Ardaric Vaanes was a Renegade Raven Guard who finally managed to redeem himself by helping Uriel Ventris Thousand Son Sorcerer Vistario arguably redeemed himself by shooting his Raptora Akhtar in the head, thus allowing Ancient Rylanor to detonate a Life Eater Virus bomb in Fulgrim's face.
Another example of a chaos marine fully devoted to one of the chaos god being able to find some form of redemption, was in the short story "The Ancient Awaits" When a Thousand Sons sorcerer (sorry, can't remember his name now) and his Raptorae found Ancient Rylanor from the Emperor's Children legion on Istvaan 3 10k years after the Istvaan Atrocity. Rylanor sent a beacon to lure Fulgrim so he could slay him by detonating a virus bomb, which had been contained by the sorcerer. Rylanor would be ripped from his sarcophagus by Fulgrim, who tried to convince the dreadnought to join hil. Rylanor's words of loyalty to the Emperor and his hatred toward his primarch had somehow inspired the sorcerer to let the virus bomb detonate, stating that Rylanor deserved better than any of them
There is a finite line between the renegade, and the heretic. Not every renegade is a heretic, but most heretics turned renegade prior to their heresies. The Bedab War and Siege of Vraks are both good examples of once (mostly) altruistic resistances with home of changing the systems that the Imperium was forced to work with, only to sour with the dark powers that first suggested these things. And more often than not, when a smaller force realizes the full breath of danger they must face against with the combined Imperium, the Ruinous powers becomes that much more appealing, and thus more likely to lead to damnation with no remorse.
Renegade Astartes / Unaligned CSM: Definitely yes considering there are multiple instances in canon where it's happened. Marked CSM: ...are basically big bags of chaos whose mark of favor will corrupt Imperials by their very proximity and regardless of their intentions... so outside of a Living Saint or some other immensely powerful Imperial entity cleansing / purging / burning that mark off... no.
Of course, redemption is always available to one who truly wishes to change their ways. Although the Imperium may wish to exact the highest price for that. That might be a deal breaker.
I know of at least one instance of somebody being wholly corrupted by chaos and then feeling regret for it, but that kind of had the extraordinary circumstances of the Emperor Himself blasting the chaos (and his soul) out of him.
The thousand sons are pretty big questionmark they where kinda forced to chaos due to Horus conviencing Russ to destroy propsero instead just getting Magnus to terra. "If the path to salvation leads through the halls of purgatory, then so be it." Azhek Ahriman from the thousand sons
Without a doubt, yes. Huron Blackheart physically purged his corruption in his book and then, instantly, decides to go back to the power of Chaos. There is some way to remove corruption and taint; but nobody knows how because the Imperium wont accept defectors or enemy's into its ranks so there is no motivation to seek out moral or physical redemption methods - unless you're a chaos warrior seeking to avoid spawndom.
I like hearing about stuff like this. It’s much more interesting that the fate/redemption of a renegade/traitor Astartes is more complicated than just death. Edit: wanted to add more to my feelings. The “only in death” answers and memes are fun and all. But the idea of only in death can they find redemption doesn’t allow for varied or interesting storytelling.
"As a member of the Alpha Legion personally responsible for the death of the crew of an entire Astartes strike cruiser via removal of gellar fields I find this voxvid insufficient. You have, however, earned a like."
There was also the First Founding Marine in the novel Eye of Terror... who was lied to about the events of the Horus Heresy and called on Tzeentch, in the end he helps the heroes escape the Eye of Terror and is taken back to be tortured/redeemed.
I guess it comes down to how souls and the warp works. Magnus had his soul shattered and fragments were never turned over to chaos yet Magnus's main body became a prince. Horus apparently had parts of his soul ripped out to permanently undergo the trials while the main portion was annihilated. The eldar apparently reside and have been removed from slanesh's belly after being eaten does that mean these souls exist forever but are trapped, or maybe the void left by removing the soul is what chaos occupies. Can a portion of a soul reconstitute the whole or can like the drucari their souls be fully restored. Personally I think as long as the soul's will isn't shattered by chaos as they try to basically digest it the soul can be removed, repaired, and resurrected. What we see as a chaos space marine is a being with part of the soul removed and as they progress to princedom more is taken until all that is left is the physical body possessed by demons able to use the mind and memories of the husk.
When Abbadon the Despoiler bows before the Emperor in guilt for his crimes will be the time chaos is truly defeated, the age of the imperium comes to an end, and Games workshop vows to donate all of their profits to charity
I would say based on your actions against the Imperium. But it would also be depending on who's deciding who deserves that chance, so if you had lets say Dorn judging every traitor astartes coming through, he would most likely put them all into the ground and use the remains as a platform for a new fortress. Girlyman on the other hand MIGHT give them a chance if he sees they are actually worthy of it redemption but would also be just as reluctant to crush their skull like Asmodai in a room full of people who know the secrets of the Dark Angels.
A dude made concept art for a chaos marine that wanted to be back In the imperium,so what they did was remove and parts of his armor with chaos symbols and did not repair the armor as punishment, they were also covered in a load of holy seals and the such
All I’m saying is, the feeling of serving chaos must be REALLY pleasurable, if it means sacrificing all your body parts and augmenting yourself like a lot of the traitors do. Not being able to eat or piss or sleep properly is a lot to sacrifice, even for a SPESH MAHIN...
I do enjoy your work. You are now a legend in the imperium that true, but even legend are not safe from the dark power of the immaterium it seems. The only fact of bringing a question like this to the mind of the weak could mean only one thing and one thing only. HERESY !!! And how we deal with heresy ? Us the true son of the emperor 40k theories? WITH FIRE !!! You maybe have forgotten so , when you have commit the ultimate sin of heresy trying to trade heresy with power but WE HAVE NOT.
I have a question for more experienced 40k fans. Could chaos have taken on the imperium before the heresy? Chaos used the traitors to do the majority of damage to the imperium, but if none of the primarchs and legions betrayed the emperor, would they have had the power to defeat chaos? The emperor wouldn’t have been mortally wounded, all primarchs would be fighting for humanity, Malcador would still live, and the amount of marines and titans would be greater the after the heresy.
Chaos by its nature cannot ever truly be defeated, but if the Imperium had never been riven by the Heresy then Chaos would easily have been contained within its own dimension and something might have been devised to make that containment permanent.
My own space marine chapter are renegades due their opposition to the inquisition and the way they treated the celestial lions chapter. They also disapprove of the way the imperium is run. While being renegades they still protect humanity. They will go to great lengths to protect civilian life and the people they believe the imperium walks all over. I've written them a sort of proper knights and good guys, sort of like the salamanders and space wolfs

REPEEEEEEEEEEENT?!
Did somebody say REPENT?
Our assumptions have been correct,
He has a suspicious book,
He is in cahoots with the Fallen
Make him REPENT!
That'd be an interesting story. A converted loyal Second Born warband trying to make contact without just being shot at immediately.

And Fulgrim, somehow, someway manages to still live in a Clone body. Now he seeks redemption though he is in the collection of Trazyn.

I don’t think there’s any welcome arms in the Imperium.
What squad? That was John hurt being awesome, but unless it's a salamanders tac squad, nobody says that.

A wise inquisitor told me, "ONCE A HERETIC! ALWAYS A HERETIC!"
That's right Inquisitor, this video right here.

That's a complex question with a very simple answer. No.

It ultimately depends upon whether you are querying if they can truly be "redeemed" of their taint (as in re-enter the protection which had they'd previously known under the Emperor's light gleaming upon their Body & Soul (Almost, universally answered in the negative)
or if they can merely come to an accepting of something nearing remorse or at the very least regret, and decide merely to find a form of "Name Redemption" a cleansing upon their tarnished legacy, or honor (but, lacking the possibility of ever purifying their bodies or soul of it's inabsolvable taint) purchased only through atonement by acting against their patrons with honest contrition.
Defying their dread host for the Emperor although, knowing it's in spite of their souls remaining forever forfeit regardless.
(This, although very much possible... it's a choice that's extremely unlikely to be made... and even more an unquestionably daunting road to set down upon even for an Adeptus/Legionnaires Astartes.)
Compound this further, most Astartes who have followed the eight-fold path far enough to be declared excommunicate traitorous have like fallen far beyond caring about their legacy or perceived honor within Imperial Archives or by remembrancers let alone even considering or more laughably succumbing to something they'd consider as universally hindering as remorse...

Kinda surprised that you didn't bring up the Carcharodons or the Blood Ravens. Or at least Sevatar's final recorded act in The Long Night.
SM chapters gather around discussing about redemption
Ultra "They have forsaken and once is enough, they can only be redeemed by a bolter to the head!"
Salamanders "Perhaps they have seen their faulty ways, perhaps they may redeem themselves again"
Iron First "Only if they sacrifice the entire Iron Warriors traitor chapter we will allow"
Space Wolves "Over our dead bodies"
Blood Angels ...
Ardaric Vaanes was a Renegade Raven Guard who finally managed to redeem himself by helping Uriel Ventris
Thousand Son Sorcerer Vistario arguably redeemed himself by shooting his Raptora Akhtar in the head, thus allowing Ancient Rylanor to detonate a Life Eater Virus bomb in Fulgrim's face.
Another example of a chaos marine fully devoted to one of the chaos god being able to find some form of redemption, was in the short story "The Ancient Awaits"
When a Thousand Sons sorcerer (sorry, can't remember his name now) and his Raptorae found Ancient Rylanor from the Emperor's Children legion on Istvaan 3 10k years after the Istvaan Atrocity.
And your ways will be changed. Hail the lords of change. Hail Tzeench.
Would outliving the Imperium be considered redemption?
If there's is no church...there's is no faith or God....so technically YES
that’d be like waiting for your grandpa to die and saying you’re redeemed even though he never forgave you for almost killing him
I know of at least one instance of somebody being wholly corrupted by chaos and then feeling regret for it, but that kind of had the extraordinary circumstances of the Emperor Himself blasting the chaos (and his soul) out of him.
First of all, through the Emperor anything is possible. Jot that down.
Yep, they just need to make an appointment first with Asmodai for... spiritual realignment.
Only if they sit on the naughty step and promise to never, ever, do it again.
I'd say the renegade marines, the ones that dont fall to chaos but stop supporting the imperium could be.
I have a question for more experienced 40k fans. Could chaos have taken on the imperium before the heresy? Chaos used the traitors to do the majority of damage to the imperium, but if none of the primarchs and legions betrayed the emperor, would they have had the power to defeat chaos? The emperor wouldn’t have been mortally wounded, all primarchs would be fighting for humanity, Malcador would still live, and the amount of marines and titans would be greater the after the heresy.
i think the threat posed by the emperor is what caused the chaos gods to conspire and plan the heresy to begin with. so... yes.
