It is amazing that the iphone is now more than adequate for the video inserts in between discussion of the photographs. If that works for you, stick with it. After all I suspect it's the quality of your analysis and discussion of the shots that is keeping your audience engaged.
Thanks so much. I’m in Lofoten at the moment and have been using the phone more and more and getting better with it. The Filmic Pro app for example has incredible stabilization and the ability to shoot log, so I’m going to carry on doing these kind of videos for the trips I’m making in this first part of the year. I’ll still do stuff like my old videos too, but I’m quite interested to use this format to talk about the shots we do on the workshops
Thanks so much for the comment. I think I prefer the panos too...I love the letterbox format. Sledging down was a lot of fun..although we had a bit of a walk at the end
Hi Andy thanks for another great Video. I just like to say I brought Deuter Freerider Pro 30 pack after seeing your video. It’s a great pack so much better then dedicated camera pack. Keep up the great work.
Hello Andy, Andrea and the other 5 nice people attending the workshop. It has been an amazing week in the Dolomites. I've been watching this first video with my family minutes after you published it. Can't wait to see part 2. Toutes mes amitiés.
Those droneshots were beautiful! Amongst the best I've seen. Always great to see your video's, they're so thoughtful and inspiring that they really invite you to go out and shoot more :)
I agree - it’s hard focusing on both video and photography at the same time. For me at least, it can cause mistakes. To your point about discretely filming, you might consider trying an Osmo Pocket (or the v2 of it whenever it lands...it’s due for an update). Literally fits in your pocket and the gimbal is wonderful. Not an a-roll cam IMO but surprisingly good for b-roll especially with a set of ND filters.
Hi Todd, how are you doing? I had a look at the Osmo Pocket and it does look interesting. It certainly helps to have something that you can start filming with with almost no set up
What a great video again! Love watching these. The last shot in this video gave me inspiration for my northern lights shooting tonight. See how it goes although it’s been forecasted crispy -30 C tonight so it’s gonna be pretty chilly. :D
Thanks Andy. Definitely was worth spending few hours in cold. Got some nice ones to take with although I didn’t manage to do the shot I had planned beforehand. Well next time.
lovely images Andy - thanks for sharing :-) We haven't even had a frost here in S Wales so far this year thanks to warming, let alone any snow. So jealous!
Enjoyable video and great shots. 👍🏻 Interesting point about DoF. Struggling a little with Z7 as many claim lower apertures acceptable but not totally convinced.
Hi Andy, I enjoy your videos so much. Question, will you be going with the Fuji XT4 instead of the XT3? I am starting from a Canon Powershot and was looking at the XT3 but now wondering if the XT4 is worth the extra money? I shoot almost everything, but do enjoy landscapes, wildlife and sunsets. Thanks for any help you can give
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm sure at some point I'll have a look at the X-T4, IBIS and that screen are useful for video. If you don't shoot video or handheld much, then you're probably as well with the X-T3
Really enjoyed the video Andy. The snowy landscape looks really beautiful and maybe not as cold as some of the other locations you do? How did the Fuji handle the colder temperatures? Hope you are enjoying the iphone 11. The footage looked great, and your style of vlogging with mostly overdubbed commentary I find more relaxing to watch and less hectic than that of many others. It also gives you more opportunity to explain finer technical or compositional points than trying to do that on site in a howling wind, for instance! So a great success. It looks like you had a great trip! Regards :)
Hey Hamish, good to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm still finding my way a little with vlogging but it's really important for me to have that distance when I can be a little more analytical of the images, which is harder to do in the field. The iPhone 11 is amazing..i've actually been using it a little with an anamorphic lens, which is a lot of fun. As for the temperature, it really depends...the Dolomites is actually often colder than Lofoten for example because of the altitude. This year wasn't so bad, but last year it was down to -17 a few times, which is the coldest I've ever experienced. We'll be in Iceland in March and will spend a few days up in Landmannalaugar (we're going in one of those super jeeps) so I'm curious to see how cold it gets there. Hope all is well with you, take care
Thanks, Andy, I just love the Dolomites, but have never photographed them in winter. I really appreciate your discussion of your compositions, I always learn something from your videos and was particularly interested to hear that the crop sensor on the XT-3 gives more depth-of-field. I was also interested to see that you used your Fuji X-T30 for the pano and wondered why this camera rather than the X-T3? Many thanks again.
Thanks for the comment Robert, glad you enjoyed the video. With the X-T30 it's just that basically that camera has the tele lens and the X-T3 has the wide angle. This way I don't change lenses in the field and just use whichever camera has the lens I need.
Hi Andy, great video and amazing pictures😍 Can you tell me, where you made this picture in minute 12? Oh and by the way. Many of the pass roads are closed in winter right? Even the pass road to the three Peaks is closed?! Where would you go in Winter? Sorry for all of this questions😅
Thanks for the comment. The image in the 12th minute is from near Passo Falzarego. Most of the big mountain passes are open, there are very few main roads closed in winter. The road to Tre Cime is closed, but you can walk up there. In winter there are plenty of places you can shoot; Passo Giau, Lagazuoi, Alpe di Suisi, Passo Rolle, Val Venegia
I was skiing last week in Cortina - the weather was great and most days the peaks (including Tofana which you mentioned) were painted with light by the early morning and late afternoon sun - they positively glowed with the most amazing colours of the exposed limestone - I've skied in many countries and never seen such incredibly lit peaks - I also managed to get some shots with my X-T2 and 18-135. I can see why you shoot so often in the Dolomites!! Look forward to the next video.
Andy you mentioned you used a crop sensor camera. I just have a question. I have two Nikon camera bodies both at 24 megapixels. One is full frame the other is crop sensor. I realize the crop sensor will introduce more noise, But can the image quality be the same for printing between a crop sensor and a full frame?
Printing really comes down to pixels. Basically a good guide for print size is that you'll be printing at 100 pixels per centimetre....less than that and you can see the pixelation with your eyes. A 24mp sensor will be 6000 pixels along the longest edge, so at 100pixels per centimetre you'll get a 60cm native print. This is true regardless of sensor size.
The iPhone video quality is ridiculous. I hope you found the filming process not too intrusive on the workshop because I'd love to see more from future trips!
Thanks so much. I’m still working on getting the best out of the iPhone. I filmed this using various different apps and found out that some were shooting in FHD and not 4K, so hopefully future videos will have a higher quality. I actually didn’t find filing intrusive at all and it’s something I’d like to carry on doing through workshops this year to see how it goes
Did my first phototrip to the dolomites last week. Made the mistake of walking up Tre Cime rather than hiring the snow mobiles, turned out to be a much longer hike than the guys hiring the snow mobiles had suggested! Going back down on a sledge was fun however!
Hi James...yeah, it’s fair walk up, I think it’s 4km from the snowmobile rental place with a 500m gain. It’s worth it though, it’s a wonderful place in the snow
Hi Andy, thanks for sharing! It's always great to enjoy the way you photograph winter mountains. You got a good snow situation in the Dolomites; unfortunately, here in central Italy mountains we're experiencing almost total lack of winter and snow, just over 2200 mt. Any way, we photograph what we have. Thanks again and I look forward the next episode!
Depends how big you want to print. 24mp is 6000 pixels on the longest edge, so at 100 pixels per centimetre you'll get a 60cm print. I've had double page spreads in magazines from a 12mp camera and it's looked fine.
Thanks Andy, always good to hear a photographer's reasoning behind the compositions. :-)
Thanks for the comment. I wanted to give a slightly more in-depth commentary on the images and not just do a straight vlog. Glad you found it useful. I w

Some of these would be incredible milkyway shots
Yeah, sadly there's a lot of light pollution in the Dolomites..there are quite a few towns in all the valleys
Andy, Thanks for all the insight that you share In the world of photography. Cheers.:-)
Thanks so much Mike
Thanks Andy, that was very useful.. And beautiful.
Thanks so much Jennifer
Great ideas for my Mavic 2 Pro. Thanks, Andy!
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you found it useful
Really enjoyed this type of video! Keep them coming.
Thanks so much. I’ll be posting more over the next few months
Fantastic pano Andy, much prefer it to the portrait shot, but I am a sucker for panos! That sledging looked like a good way to get down the mountain.
Thanks so much for the comment. I think I prefer the panos too...I love the letterbox format. Sledging down was a lot of fun..although we had a bit of a walk at the end
Lovely work Andy. I haven't watched it yet, I'm waiting until I've cooked dinner to sit down and enjoy it, I know it'll be fantastic.

Your Drone clips alwys stunning than others. Make a video about settings and how you shooting, editing the shot.
