I haven't thought of that solution. Usually I am shooting subjects at 9+ meters with the R7+800/11, so I haven't a focus distance problem. The very tight frame is a pain for tracking birds in flight, though - a full frame body could help
@@alcosound The extension tubes work really, really well. I forget about it myself a lot but I was shooting hummingbirds in Arizona and was using the 600 F4 - I LOVE that lens but the longer minimum focus distance was limiting me - so - I put a bunch on the lens to shorten my MFD and what a difference. You lose the infinity and distance shots, but since that was not what I was shooting, it was the perfect set up. Right now, Canon does not make native RF extension tubes so you have to use 3rd party. My 600 F4 III is EF and I have native EF extension tubes. I do have 3rd party RF ones though and they work too. 🙏🤗💖
Great images. I really like the ones with the eyes closed. Both of those lenses are sharp. Yes, the RF 800 f11 has limitations, long MFD, but for the money I don't know how it can be beat.
I dont think it can for the money.... you just work around the limitations as we do with any gear. Shot the R5 Mark II with the 200-800 these last couple of days. Have not even looked at those so I am eager to see how they pare together. If the 800 F11 had a shorter MFD, it would be my goto lens 95% of the time. 🙏🤗💖

Hello. Amazing video with remarkable photos of hummingbirds ! I saw in another video that you had used the EF 500mm F/4 L IS Version I. How did you compare the sharpness of this lens with the RF 100-500 ? Thank you
It has been a while since I shot that. I LOVED it but I wanted the extra reach of 600 F4 and that helped me pay for that new lens. I think people underestimate how amazing the 100-500 is. it is ungodly sharp and has a super short minimum focus distance....... and it zooms. The primes are awesome, especially in low light when you can drop it down to an F4, but it is heavy and limiting. Subject has to be a bit farther away and no zoom versatility. Like comparing apples to plumbs..... 🤣 IF IF IF Canon releases the rumored 200-500 F4 in October..... I may trade my 600 F4 for that. Not the best answer but it really depends on what you like to shoot most. I love the long prime but when something is too close, I just cant shoot it. If i had to chose one based on what and how I shoot, it would be the 100-500. I really dont think you can tell the difference in the IQ if there is one. 🙏💖🤗

I really enjoyed shooting the R6 II but in many ways enjoyed the digital stabilization of the R8 more and the IQ was the same - the AF was the same. My other favorite is still the R7.... go figure. I loved my RF800 even more when I simply added an inexpensive extension tube, solving the issue of getting closer. I haven't had an opportunity to try the tubes on my RF200-800, or other Canon lenses yet, but I've used them on every camera I've owned over decades, with excellent results. Nothing in photography is ever perfect, but there's generally a solution to most.
You might have to add 100mm of tube to get much closer, and then the af might not behave. I use 100mm of metal extension tubes with my 100-500 to get close to a bug.
I have not used that as of yet. I am shooting old school like I always have since the "old days" LOL. I am going back to Paton Center for Humming birds in about two weeks and I will be using it then. You need an app like Merlin which identifies the species by photos and then when you show the hummingbirds, you can say which species of hummingbird it is. All birds would be better if indent as there are different species in different parts of the country.
I am using electronic shutter at the highest setting. For the most part - no. I see it in one or two of the wings in shots in one of the sequences - if you missed it, then it did a good job. It has less rolling shutter than my R3 for sure. It is funny but that is one thing that never bothered me. I thought the effect looked cool sometimes. My main requirements in a camera body is how well and quick it nails focus, and it that it does nail the focus. For wildlife, I think it is excellent. but so was the R5 mark 1.... and the R8..... I was so impressed, I bought one and printed a couple of 24X36" posters of owls that I shot with it- really impressed. Everything has some drawbacks. In the case of this inexpensive 800mm lens, it does need some distance to get to that minimum focus distance like my 600 F4. The 200-800 has a bit more versatility. A great lens but that was the wrong place to use it and I knew that when I took standing in the middle like that. But, I had to try. Thank you for letting me share. 🙏🤗💖
I bought a 400 f2.8 for work in 1995, being so bright it snaps into focus in an instant, but the mfd can be a problem, so I often use extension tubes. They might make the 800 f11 a better lens. How much better is the focusing on the R5ii than the original? Worth the upgrade?
