    I've wanted to study medicine for six years now, but I didn't have the grades so I became a paramedic instead. By now I had kind of given up on my dream, my biggest fears being that I would never be good enough to be a doctor and I'd probably be struggling with studying again after such a long time, but watching your videos has somehow changed my mindset. I finally found the courage to apply for a place at the uni of my dreams. So, I know I'm just a stranger from the internet and this might come out weird, but I really wanted to say thank you, Holly, from the bottom of my heart. 🤗❤

    • @isabelle2850
      @isabelle2850 4 года назад +25

      Kirimagine remember that even when you are there, training To be a doctor, you will still feel like perhaps you are not enough. Im in my 3rd year and have a lot of thoughts and anxiety on that because i did not have great grades until now. But guess what that s fine and it doesnt show your value. It s hard to be a doctor and very very hard to be a very good one because you will never see yourself as such... my microbiology professor said this and it really stuck with me. Medicine is not a job it s a career and you will always have to grow for it. If you believe you know nothing then you probably will know enough to be a good doctor. But the most important thing in this career is to strive to be a selfless doctor, a loving people doctor. Just to do your best and do not give up.

      @@isabelle2850 Thank you for these kind words. ❤ All I ever wanted is to become a good doctor, not only when it comes to diagnoses and treatments but when all a patient needs is someone to listen to them and really care and see them as a person with feelings, hopes, dreams and fears. I strive to become a doctor people will turn to when they need help because they feel safe and understood when they come to me. I don't know if I can make it, but I will certainly try and work as hard as I can to achieve my goals and be happy. 😊❤

    Holly, when I was doing my MA In Classical Studies at the Open University, I took lots and lots of notes for my TMAs, EMA, and dissertation and I always noted the page, author, and title of book where I got my sources from. I was not always very organized because I really did not know how to structure my essays with all the notes which I took. I misread my TMA questions and I lost a lot of marks and I did not feel happy when I did not do well in my TMAs until I asked my tutor and SST for help.

    to anyone starting out their first/new semester! i'm finishing my second master's degree in October, and i can wholeheartedly recommend the flashcard + summary sheet technique! flashcards (with the number of points to memorise on!) help you drill the information in, and to look at a summary sheet only containing what you "still" don't know just before the exam is really really helpful, as you don't waste time or get distracted by a general/too broad summary sheet where you read a lot of stuff you remember anyway by now...
    good luck to anyone starting out at uni! :)

    You missed the most important one: be conscious of what you actually want to do and the time it takes. Once you do that you spend less time on your phone. Also, sleep enough hours. Responsability and discipline consume energy!

    I know this might seem like a trivial question but perhaps I’m just abit anxious about asking my lecturers... you mentioned how you would write essays and send them to be marked ? I’m assuming these essays aren’t assignments so I just wanted to ask if you ever had any lecturers turn down your essay or not mark it ? (Maybe because they didn’t have the time or just didn’t want to ¿) and how did you go about asking them to “mark” it or review it ? I’d really appreciate any advice !

    • @Jana-ne6km
      @Jana-ne6km 4 года назад +15

      I would ask the lecturer after class. You can try saying, "please, if you have some time this week, I would appreciate it if you corrected this essay that I wrote". Don't worry too much about asking them. It's their job to teach you and help you. I'm sure they would be happy to help. : )

    Taking notes is how I succeed as a student! The key for me is that I don’t make them short/concise, mine are clearly written out in a way that I understand and, most importantly, I write down how the information is APPLIED rather than just facts because that is what comes up on exams. I usually hand write them on 3/4 of a page of lined paper and leave the last 1/4 to make extra notes in case I need to add something (usually application points that the professor brings up in class!). I usually don’t have to study for my finals because how I take notes allows me to learn/absorb the information as I go!

    13:00 the reason is exactly why memery palaces are so effective.Im pretty sure that reason is the humen brain was never designed to memorize digits/numbers it was made to know locations.For example: where food, home, danger, water, safety, etc. So by memorizing by location it is easier to remember things.If this works especially well for you @Holly Gabrielle then I recommend you check out memory palaces .

    The focus should be on obtaining knowledge, developing critical thinking, broadening understanding.
    If your focus is on being number one and being constrained by structure you will have missed the point of academia and lowered your intellect.
    I struggle to see how any of this is congruent with a growth mindset.
    Finally with respect to memorisation, this does not result in deep encoding into longterm memory. Understanding rather than memorisation creates stronger encoding in long-term memory facilitated by the hippocampus and develops a complex network of related schemas and maps.

      I really wish it were like this, but unfortunately (at least for me), it's not. I'm a med student, and it doesn't matter how much I try to connect things and go more in depth, 70% of the things are just things to memorise..

    I feel many of my peers are getting top grades but don't want to admit their level of commitment. It kinds of create an impression that they get the grades on pure talent. But Reality is that they try very hard and also in a smart way. I really like it that you are smart and work really hard. It's also really cool to that you're willing to share your experience!!
