- An aerial shot of Minami Bisan Seto Ohashi Bridge from Sayama Nakanda Beach near Seto Ohashi Memorial Park.
This 1,723m long suspension bridge is a double bridge with the Kita Bisan Seto Ohashi Bridge to the north, flanking Mitsugojima, and Yoshima Island beyond.
The Seto Ohashi Bridges, including Minami Bisan Seto Ohashi Bridge, are important bridges connecting Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, and Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is a combined road and rail route that runs through the middle of the graceful archipelago of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan's first national park, and was opened in 1988 as the first of the three Honshu-Shikoku Bridges. With a total length of 13.1km (combined road and rail sections) consisting of six bridges and four viaducts, it is one of the longest combined road and rail bridges in the world.
The upper level is the expressway, and the lower level is the railway line, JR Shikoku's Seto Ohashi Line, allowing both cars and trains to pass simultaneously. The express train "Marine Liner" travels between Okayama and Takamatsu in about an hour.
The other attraction is the scenery. From the bridge, you can see the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the scenery is especially fantastic on days when they are lit up.
The Seto Ohashi Bridge is not just a means of transportation, but a crystallization of Japanese civil engineering technology and has had a major impact on the development of the local economy and tourism. Its grand scale and beauty attract people from both inside and outside Japan.
