    There is another fundamental issues with these products being a surprise, the person buying the bombs or rings not knowing what they are getting and potentially that item going to waste. We do not have endless resources for blind consumerism. While it can be fun and exciting to reveal it is a dangerous mindset to have on consumption.

    • @Palitato
      @Palitato 7 месяцев назад

      The only one of these "surprise jewelry" things I ever actually liked was one with candles... because at least you get a nice candle and multiple hours of use out of it, and then the jewelry was like an extra little bonus in it, and they were actually mostly cute/pretty.

  • @el_2904
    @el_2904 7 месяцев назад +133

    The fact is though, selling the rings and showing them on TikTok IS harmful, because it is persuading people to buy the rings and then they get unknowingly sucked into an MLM. There’s probably quite a young audience on TikTok too who wouldn’t even know it’s an MLM and think they can make a job out of it. But yeah, I feel sorry for all of the people who’ve gotten sucked into it and are then desperately trying to sell them. It’s not an excuse to let others fall prey to the same scheme though. Glad you exposed this!

    • @Skaði
      @Skaði 7 месяцев назад +9

      The way this MLM works is literally like gambling, trying the slot machine again and again until you get maybe what you wanted, thats why it's so easy to be pulled int it. I don't agree with saying the ring selling/parties are harmless, thats how they get you. You can't even buy one ring bomb, you have to have the starter pack AT LEAST and they actively try to sell you more, yeah srry Alayna I don't agree that even the ring selling is harmless.

  • @GargoylePrincess

    I totally get the intrigue. Theirs just better alternatives than an mlm that very obviously exploits vulnerable people. You can go to any store with kids toys and they sell bath-bombs with prizes inside. Just do that. I really don’t think it’s worth it especially because the consequences are so severe for many people

    My ex got hooked into an MLM back when we were married. She couldn't understand that I had a serious issue with the idea of TRYING TO PROFIT OFF OF OUR FRIENDS. Some of the products were actually useful, and I used them myself. Doesn't mean I'm okay with selling them for double what I paid to people I worked with (and had to see five days a week), and as for people I considered friends, if they had wanted any of that stuff, I'd have sold it to them at cost.
    I won't say my reluctance to join in on the selling led to our divorce, but money problems absolutely did.

      @@B.Harper7 Hah, exactly. I’ve had to explain to my non-American husband that, as a former Girl Scout, I am morally obliged to stop and buy at least a couple of boxes of cookies from every Scout troop I see. Doesn’t matter if we just bought them from a group tabling in another town, it is the payback I owe all of the people who bought cookies from me (and thus gave me opportunities I would have never otherwise had as a kid, like cool weeklong camping trips in the woods, or going to Disneyland!).

    the issue with MLMs is that they target vulnerable demographics like young people who don’t have much life experience, immigrants, and moms, and get them hooked on this idea that if they just keep going they will succeed and they end up pouring more money into it and they never make anything back, about 98% of people in MLMs will lose money. it’s a really REALLY bad thing

    My mother tried to get me and my wife involved in a vitamin MLM. She offered to pay all of the costs. I refused. I've never enjoyed selling anything and I surely wasn't going to get involved in a MLM ... frankly, I didn't want my name associated with it at all. I'm not sure she understood ... at least until it was obvious that it wasn't ever going to make any of her family any money. I refrained from any 'I told you so'-s ... partly because I don't operate that way but mostly I didn't want to give it enough thought to let it occupy any space in my already busy mind.

    If you want a similar type of fun that isn’t an MLM or a scam, I recommend getting candles or bathbombs from Fragrant Jewels. I’ve been ordering from them for a few months and have had such a good experience I signed up for their monthly box (first time I’ve done a box subscription). They have lots of items on sale and these end up being around the same price as full price candles and bathbombs from Target (except these have fun rings in them). 😃 They’re hand poured in Cali upon order if I remember right, so they take a couple weeks to ship, but I really love them!

    Were we supposed to not join the MLM or...? I don't think you were very clear on your stance.
    The problem people don't understand about pyramid schemes and MLMs is that you have to KEEP selling to stay on top of the fees. Sure, it feels great when you get buyers from your friends and family around you, but that well dries up quickly, especially if you roped one of them into the scheme. The founders get to reap the real benefits because they just have to resell cheap wares and collect fees from those below them. You, as a seller, can never outpace the costs. You'll eventually dry up all your clients and you'll slowly go into debt with fees and the demand to keep your wares up to date. Even the biggest sellers end up losing everything... or end up becoming their own con artist.
    Lastly, I don't care if the founder is queer. Fuck MLMs. They're just pyramid schemes with a new name. All they do is hurt vulnerable people.

    This is what has been missing from all of the anti MLM content I've consumed - someone actually signing up and buying the stuff and showing you how crappy it is and also talking about why it is appealing. It's not as black and white as "it's all bad".. MLMs are definitely unethical but wanting pretty shiny things and to have fun unboxing things with other people isn't inherently unethical.. it's just a shame the only way to do it is through companies who use an unethical business model.
    I love the idea of you buying more of these from people who can't shift them! I know a lot of MLMs have rules where you can't sell the stock you've bought outside of the MLM model (on Craigslist or eBay etc.) but I don't think that would apply to people who have quit the MLM but still have a bunch of the stock.

    The way that you're reacting to this is exactly how people get sucked in. It's fun, the product is usually okay, you get to be part of a community. And in this case a very popular community on the world's biggest social media platform, which you utilized. It's great that you donated but you also may have gotten all of your viewers interested in this MLM.
    You said it's like a cult because it is like a cult. It's exactly like a cult.
    Collecting things isn't just unfettered capitalism and fomo. you should really care about the things that you want to collect if that's something that you decide to do. I have ADHD and I get really excited about products and crafts and activities like this.
    These groups are evil. They take advantage of women who need help.
    It's not even a little harmless. No one should be supporting them. They're selling you garbage and preying on your gambling instinct.

    This is why I prefer the OG name of pyramid scheme, where the founders are at the top and everyone else in the middle or mainly on the bottom. Glad you are having fun and not promoting this. It's kinda like Avon, kind of useful products in a money-making scheme. 😮😅

    you dodged a giant bullet i think 😭 sometimes these companies go after resellers on ebay/fb marketplace/etc for selling off overstock once they quit. they would rather product rot than not turn a profit. glad that didn’t happen here.

    Used to be a part of an mlm because i just thought it'd be cool to learn about the product and talk to people. I'm not competative though, so I didnt care to sell/was not selling. Luckily I was able to sell my product back to a seller that had been in it for years and was successful. Glad you were able to do good with the products and get out of the subscription!

    As a collector at heart I totally get the appeal. The serotonin boost of hunting for treasure in many forms is something not everyone is going to get 😅. If I recall correctly doesn't Papa Fender have a superman collection? If so you come by it naturally. Still not a good reason to endorse pyramid schemes though LOL

    Ahh the type of MLM I love to hate ….
    Something keep in mind is that the companies are not always just exploitative towards their reps/customers. They fund or otherwise support people you don’t wanna support. Betsy DeVos is filthy rich because she married into Amway money.

    I was doing a scrapbooking mlm. The only reason i thought about joining is because i was scrapbooking. I was already spending money on products at stores. Why not try to make money if i could. I was stuck on a military base. Thing was, mlm's prey on military wives. I knew so many other women who did mlm. You could go to a different mlm party every day of the week.
    I did really enjoy scrapbooking, but even with all the interest i had generated on my blog and posts online, i wasnt making any money. I had enough product and i had to stop buying.
    While it still is a mlm, this company was not as bad as others that i have heard of. I was able to leave without any issues. They actually have a hobby level where you dont have to sell any products. I wasnt hounded by my uplines to stay or any other horror stories i have heard. But it was still set up for me really not to make any money. But unlike other mlm where the product is useless to you if you have to keep the products you paid for to then sell to customers, i ended up with crafting products that i was already paying in the first place. And i didnt have to buy everything upfront to then sell.
