I love the fact one of Rolands favorite rods has a cut tip because I accidentally broke the tip off one of my rods and since then it has actually been one of my favorites! It’s something I’m often too embarrassed to tell anyone but I feel like the tension is better when setting the hook!
Like most of us watching a master at his craft I'm in awe. I have been in the airline business since 1980, have been with three different carriers and have probably forgotten more than I remember when mentoring and coaching newbies on safety and procedure, I'm sure it's the same with Roland! But i'll take what ever info he has and know I'm better for it. Thanks a million my man.
Thank you mr. martin ive followed your instructions since i was a kid receiving a Roland martin tackle box with lures watched you on tv every sat morning instead of cartoons i would never be the fisherman i am today thank you sir
@Roland Martin Outdoors you are the man that got me into fishing. Following you and your son Scott. You have shared some great sneaky tricks and genius tips
I lived in Hawaii 3 years (Father USAF) I was age 9 and we used steel leaders catching 4'+ hammerhead sharks in a channel between Hickham AFB & Eva Beach where we lived. It seemed everything over there had huge teeth Roland~! Hope You go sometime & thanks for your time & patience & for another video packed with awesome information to be a more successful fisherman~! P.S. I can hear your wife screaming at you that you're going to ruin your teeth by pulling & cutting that fishing line! :-)
Mr Martin. I've been watching you since I was a child and I recently discovered the you tube channel. I really enjoy yours and your sons videos almond with Bill Dance and all you Ol' Timers from Saturday and Sunday morning tv shows and the bass masters. Ha!!! Thank you for sharing the wise knowledge and stories with the world even more with this you tube. Ha!!!! The video of you and your son Scott getting the boat stuck in the everglades is a classic. Ha!!!
Thanks Roland I love the fact your on RUclips. Keep bringing those tips. I had to jump off this other channel, I think it was SMC, that guy always changes the rules but he does catch fish.
I just started using braid this yr, very very helpful video thank you so much Mr. Martin. I started on Scott's channel and seen your gator and found out you started a channel. Love it my to favorite fisherman to watch,
also a question for you about braid actually 2. 1st how often should I change braid? 2nd what's your recommendation on backing mono or floro what size?
+Albert Harris I know I'm not Roland, but as far as backing is concerned, save your money and buy the cheapest mono you can. If you're trying to save the most amount of money on braid having similar diameter line can help, if not it really doesn't matter. This is of course pertaining to freshwater fishing and not salt.
Great to see you with your own RUclips channel. I think you will enjoy sharing your vast knowledge over time. For myself personally I use a triple surgeon knot for braid to fluro but to each their own. Hopefully in the future you will include your fellow Fishing Legends in some of your videos. Referring to Bill and Jimmy Thanks Roland for sharing.
I don't use the double uni knot for leaders anymore. It was the first knot I learned as far as tying a leader to braided line but I found that the finished knot was a little big and that made it have difficulty passing through casting rod guides at times, especially if you want to use a longer leader where the junction knot is back into the spool. It's not so bad if you use a shorter leader where the knot itself ends up in within the guides of the rod when you've got the lure reeled up to make a cast. That's why I made the switch and started tying the *Alberto* knot pretty much 100% of the time. It's basically a modified or improved albright knot. On almost all of my casting rods because my frogging or punching rods, I will use a fluorocarbon leader of varying length. I just like having that sensitivity of braid on my moving baits like spinnerbaits, square bills, flukes & swimbaits, and I can just tie on a leader to whatever length I want and still not have to worry about fish being line shy. The alberto knot is great because of how small and compact it is when finished. It's definitely smaller than the double uni knot, but it's also great because it will not slip at all which means you can trim the tag ends completely flush with the knot AND the knot is just as strong as the double uni knot, possibly even stronger. It's a truly great knot. The double uni knot will get the job done too though. Nothing wrong with it. There's plenty of knots you can use for tying a leader. You can tie a uni knot on one side, and an improved clinch on the other as well. You can tie a blood knot. Or you can learn how to tie the FG knot, which is a much more advanced knot but probably the best main line to leader knot out there. It's just much more involved to tie.
Hey Roland, you are my favorite fishing legend & hero for as long as I can remember. You got me using the polymer knot 30 years ago and still using it today. I've recently been using double uni knot and watching your instructions tying it made it easy... I always used a barrel swivel in the past, but it won't pass through the guides. I was just using the uni knot, braid to leader, then a bit of superglue and it works like a dream through the guides! Thank you for all the years of entertainment and a life time of great knowledge to the sport. Is there any chance you'll be adding links to the items in future videos? Specifically the bass pro casting reel at the beginning with the 8:1 ratio? I want to get into the casting reels using braid, but I want to minimize backlash to zero. I used them in the past with mono & backlashes were a problem.
My setups are pretty much identical. The only rods I don't have braid on is my shallow/medium crank bait setup and my light worm, jig rod for weightless and finesse bait casting stuff. I go with flouro on those.
Hey Roland, can you make a Florida tip video with all the colors, baits, and tactics that you use throughout the different seasons. I fish the Kissimmee chain and would appreciate any advice.
i have a PENN battle combo salt water with i think 65 test braid. using a heavy plug in a lake, i can launch that sucker a country mile. i dont have many poles, but i like that on lakes
Listening to Roland Martin, reinforces technics. End result is I have more confidence. Afterall if it's good enough for him, it's definitely good enough for me.
When I was young and mostly a catfish, brim and crappie fisherman, my dad always told me to use lite strength line so when I got hung up I could just point my rod where I was hung up, pull straight back and break the line. I could catch a 20lb channel cat on 6lbs test with the drag set right. Made for a long fight landing one like this on lite line. Now I try to bass fish some and I understand using 65lb braid to rip through reeds and light grass. But what do you do if you get hung on an underwater log, rocks or something braid won’t rip through? Will the plugs come loose a lot of times, break, or can you do damage to your reel trying to pull loose?
Thanks. I use both knots. What line do you use for jig fishing?? Been using 50lb braid tieing a Flurocarbon liter of co-polymer liter. I used to go straight braid an I really can't tell any difference in the Okla lakes I fish.
I'm a new fisherman. I frog fish 30lb braided line with 50lb mono leader because of pike. What's the best line leader setup for fishing bass and pike so I don't get bit off?
Roland, you recently advised me to make my fluoro leaders 2 feet long, yet in this video, youi twice mentioned that leaders should be 7-8' long - so please expound upon this. THANK YOU!
Mr. Martin most of my fishing sticks and reels say ten pound test so can you put braid I do have spider wire on my spinning one lake in magnolia Arkansas haven't fished in a long time has a tons of stumps caught my biggest bass their to date. Had to pull the fish over a stump. I was using a shad but it had a slot in the belly for the hook. You can run bass boats any size but if don't mind scratches aluminum boats are better for the lake. I know my father won't put our z118 in the lake their is a main open water.even your air boat suits it. We do have a allumacraft crappie deluxe from the nineties with a 25 Yamaha. The ouachita river in calion Arkansas is a good bass river that's where I'd want an air boat as much stuff tends float the unseen log is what will get cha. Never damaged the prop. But once hit an under water log in the middle of the river planing out it kicked the lower unit so hard it broke the mounting arm where the outboard pivots up and down took out the corner. Due to her age we fortunately got hold of a new mounting bracket. She's sitting un used for a year now. It's under a cover. Need to sell so somebody under a budget can fish. I have named our Ranger sparkles my dad eventually wants to get s bigger bass boat by Ranger. Those e-tech's are very fuel effecient getting several trips between fill ups. My dad at the time was un sure about the evinrude. I got the promotional DVD I was thinking when we were using the Jon boat in putting a e- tech. Our bass boat has their 150 plenty fast even with all the gear. When he does buy another one he'll get the g-two.
+Mark Lockwood Not Martin, but you can use braid on any rod. Just if you're hung up don't push the rod past it's limits, keep a smooth piece of round metal(wacky rig tool can work) to wrap the braid around and pull on that so it doesn't cut into your hand. That's another reason leaders are great, if you have 50lb braid main line and a 17lb leader, obviously the leader is going to break before your main line saving you from having to re-spool as often from snags and it's not as big of a pain as breaking 50lb test(which really breaks probably around 45-75lbs depending on brand).
Roland, your enthusiasm is contagious!! Will be watching your videos all winter here in the 1000 Islands!! You are always welcome at my fishing camp.
I love the fact one of Rolands favorite rods has a cut tip because I accidentally broke the tip off one of my rods and since then it has actually been one of my favorites! It’s something I’m often too embarrassed to tell anyone but I feel like the tension is better when setting the hook!
Roland you're the best!! You have been my fisherman hero since I was a little boy back in the 90s.
Happy to get tips from Roland Martin! I left a 👍

Great to see you back Roland, keep doing these videos. A real living legend !!!!
Definitely my 2 favorite knots, double uni for my leader and the polmyer for my braid. Great stuff Roland.

Nice to see you on You Tube Roland! My Dad watched you for years and so have I !
Never saw a uniknot made so simple. Keep the videos coming Roland!!!!!

Really helpful. Would love to learn more about pattern fishing for Bass. Thanks for doing these
great tips Mr. Martin... love the vid. I wonder how the lake Okeechobee is going to change and alter after Irma hits.

This guy needs to see this comment
The G.O.A.T. KEEP EM COMING! When is the gator video coming out?
Great job, very informative. Been chatting on FishBrain with you several times.
Fantastic information!! Thanks Roland!!
just THE MAN, and his camera.... that is all you need
Thank you Roland very much. That was some very good tips for sure.
Great information from the 9 time angler of the year
Love the How-To videos, thanks.
rolling braided my number one go-to when I'm fishing at flipping jig
Great video keep it up!!! Looking forward to more!!!
Hello from Oklahoma, Roland I grew up watching you on TV
My setups are pretty much identical. The only rods I don't have braid on is my shallow/medium crank bait setup and my light worm, jig rod for weightless and finesse bait casting stuff. I go with flouro on those.
Thanks for the reply, I’d assume the leaders are for visual and you like the braid for castability
Correct and the braid provides a better hook set!
Thank you for the tips Mr.Martin great video
Could you do a video on rigging up weedless baits and how to properly set the hook? Great video as always!
Awesome tutorial mr Martin thank you
Hey Roland, can you make a Florida tip video with all the colors, baits, and tactics that you use throughout the different seasons.
I fish the Kissimmee chain and would appreciate any advice.

Roland be THE MAN !!
When the legend speaks listen to him😀
Damn I just learned so much in 14 minutes! I knew I recognized this guy from TV lol
Listening to Roland Martin, reinforces technics. End result is I have more confidence. Afterall if it's good enough for him, it's definitely good enough for me.
Roland do you tie leaders onto your spinnerbaits or do you go braid straight to the lure, what lures do you tie a leader on braid?
Worms, jigs, jerk baits and nearly any lure
When I was young and mostly a catfish, brim and crappie fisherman, my dad always told me to use lite strength line so when I got hung up I could just point my rod where I was hung up, pull straight back and break the line. I could catch a 20lb channel cat on 6lbs test with the drag set right. Made for a long fight landing one like this on lite line. But what do you do if you get hung on an underwater log, rocks or something braid won’t rip through? Will the plugs come loose a lot of times, break, or can you do damage to your reel trying to pull loose?
I wrap the line around the reel to break it!
Question when should you use a leader for lure you touched on it in their video but if you could expand on this with all lures jigs, spoons . Spinners
What pound test flurocarbon are you using for leaders with 50lb braid?
i'm sure you were an amazing algebra teacher.....
thanks for the lesson. I'm starting to use braid and it can be tricky
Thanks. I use both knots. What line do you use for jig fishing?? Been using 50lb braid tieing a Flurocarbon liter of co-polymer liter. I used to go straight braid an I really can't tell any difference in the Okla lakes I fish.
Great instructional video !!!
Old school classic!
I'm a new fisherman. I frog fish 30lb braided line with 50lb mono leader because of pike. What's the best line leader setup for fishing bass and pike so I don't get bit off?
Thanks great instrutios !
will you make a video over all your gear ration reels and rod length and power
Love the Palomar. Tie it for almost everything.
Palomar for me too. Never fails.
Roland, you recently advised me to make my fluoro leaders 2 feet long, yet in this video, youi twice mentioned that leaders should be 7-8' long - so please expound upon this.
THANK YOU!
They can be as short as 18 inches but I like a longer leader
Love it.!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Dude u should have your own tv show!
I like your video con you explain what to use on a inline spinner sometime thanhs?
What about Power Pro?
My very favorites.
Original for catfish, more abrasion resistant, to the new 8 strand SUPER 8 SLICK for bass.
A true legend.

Bro you are Scott Martin Father, Nice videos thanks for teacht with tips & triks, Bless you GOD From Panama
No, Scott Martin is Roland Martin's son!
What?!? Roland using favorite? Was that Flair's flipping stick?
No he said it was one of his favorite rods, not it was made by Favorite rods.
Nice, is that flairs froggin'/flippin' stick?! Awesome!

I now use your cutting method=teeth and knife, works great !!
Nice tips
Roland the master
Always thumbs up
Fish n fool knot is the best knot for a lot of applications in my opinion
Big fan for many many years. Gotta work on your picture quality. Maybe get a few pointers from that Scott Martin kid!
Great infomation
Heading out to re-tie some leaders.
That’s one hell of a man cave
Please, adopt me, Mr. Martin. 😁🎣
Dudes a savage cuts the line with knife while holding it in his teeth.... old skool
Roland Martin reminds me fish fishburne legends in the game with there knowledge
GOAT
what about flouro?
i see all these youngsters talking about the favorite rods. How are they? no bs
