Taking the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or visa versa should be done in the daytime so you can enjoy the diversity of the country as you pass through it. The night train never let's you enjoy that. You leave in the dark and arrive just after daylight.

I have heard that the North trains have been relocated outside downtown since January 2023.

do you have a broker that you can recommend to contact and get this 1st class experience?

I have travelled 1st class Chiang Mai to Bangkok. There is one problem going this way; the 1st class carriage is right behind the locomotive, and the A/C unit for the carriage is on the roof. At slower speeds, engine exhaust fumes are sucked into the A/C unit and into the carriage. Otherwise, very comfortable, the buffet car and its catering are no where near the old train, all microwave fast food packs now. I have been traveling Thai and other trains for nearly fifty years, as far down as Singapore.

  • @jdavies212msu

Seasoned train travelers in Thailand know that 2nd class sleeper beds are more comfortable. Why? Because the beds are configured parallel to the tracks (not at right angles as in 1st class). This makes a huge difference in sleep comfort and continuity when the train frequently stops and starts during the night (at stations, rail sidings, etc.). Yes, less private; but that is rarely a problem in polite Thailand.

there are very few countries in the world where trains are regurarily faster than buses on long distance. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, BENELUX, parts of France and Great Britain, maybe some of the Scandinavian countries and parts of Spain. Besides that you have Japan and parts of China, and that's pretty much it. In all the other coutries around the world buses are usually faster than trains, at least for long distance, except for a few high-speed rail corridors that may or may not exist...
