A true artist , another unsung hero of special effects , bless this woman
That shot in Star Trek: First Contact when the camera pulls back from a close-up of crewmembers walking on the Enterprise's saucer to show the entire front of the ship, in one swooping move?
They planned to lay in a digital ship surface to the closest panels to get the detail they needed, but Kim Smith went back with her brushes and managed to paint that section with such incredibly fine detail that the entire Enterprise in that shot was the real model, albeit with digital people walking across the surface. The start of the move was showing a part of the ship only a couple of inches across, her talent is just amazing!
From Japan, to Epcot, Ghostbusters II and Star Trek. Amazing resume!
Its so mindblowing how she begins recounting her gigs and it just keeps getting cooler and bigger - I am a fan of Star Trek, so I was delighted to see she also did work on some of the big E`s :D
I watched a guy recently build a large version of the Big E - there's a sh*itload of different paints all over it.
These mini docs are wonderful! I love celebrating these artists who behind the scenes who created such magic for the world of cinema. This woman is a craftsman and a true artists who's work should always be remembered!! Thank you's to her and this channel!!!

Just to illustrate how much impact this movie has had on me… Craig Hosking was the aerial coordinator for the movie. He’s still in the biz. I reached out to him during my pilot training and he told me that 90% of hollywood aerial camera work is done in helicopters. I completely changed my career path from fixed wing to helicopters. I just passed my helicopter instrument check ride last Friday. Next up is my commercial license. I’m well on my way, and it all started at The Rocketeer!
Drones are also being used a lot in filmmaking. If you can fly RC helicopters or commercial drones that might also be good.

Wow, I have 20 hours of videos of so many films miniatures and pyro all collecting dust. I'll have to dust it all off and get it onto RUclips. Now I have seen your channel it's making me think it would be a winner. It's sad all these amazing miniatures & filming ways are becoming a thing of the past. It's a dinosaur art form.

Studios no longer have an interest putting these kind of “film school” extras on their discs. Some specialist distributors are still doing it for us film fans. Please preserve it and share it! Some of us would even pay for it.

Loved that movie The Rocketeer - Was gonna take my Son But he was ill - ha - So My Dad had earlief mentioned he would would love to see it - So I took my Dad !
It was a really great movie -An my Dad he loved loved He talked it for weeks afterwards - He fought in Europe during 2nd WW and this movie it sort of appealed to him ! - And the fact that there was absolutely no swearing used in the script ! Great seeing the people behind this movie now ! -Thanks for sharing !

As an aeromodeller, my favorite parts of "The Rocketeer" were the shots of the
Gee Bee Model Z. A glance at my icon tells you why
I was hoping to see it here but, no joy. And Jennifer Connelly was smokin' hot!
There were no miniatures made of the Gee Bee for the film.

That film also has one of my favorite James Horner scores!
It's a great one. I'm not a pilot like he was, but I would think a lot pilots love the score's Main Title/Takeoff.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems as though special-effects were more fun when they were done practically, with physical models and such, than when they're done with CGI. (It seems as though the movies themselves were often better too, oddly enough.)
Part of the reason I made this documentary. Hopefully some new directors will get inspired by practical effects, and get away from the computer. Wes Anderson keeps it alive. And Tarantino.
@@piercefilm I've heard from many special-effects artists from ILM who said the same thing: that working with models & miniatures, building them from scratch with nothing but balsa wood, plastic detailing-kits, and leds strung together, was way more fun than sitting in front of a computer-screen for 8 hours a day moving a mouse around. I'm not the least surprised.

THE ROCKETEER is an awesome film! Love it. After seeing this video, hopefully someday there'll be a segment discussing either Michael Bay's THE ISLAND. Or EAGLE EYE.
The Island only had a quick shot of one miniature, if I recall. Also not much miniature work in Eagle Eye. But more ILM film effects coming up!

Rocketeer is one of my favorite movies that DisKnees didn't destroy
So she worked on EVERY special fx movie EVER basically
Mostly ILM effects movies at the time.
Dif you build the Minitures it Paint them or Both
And what did you do on the Props
Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t this film and HOOK the first 2 movies to employ CG matte paintings? Those must’ve been a pain to composite in an Amiga
I think both films still used hand painted mattes. But there may have been some digital paintings as well.
Could you make a video about the Enterprise E model?
I never asked about that model because I'm not really a fan of the later ST films. ILM did great work, but I only liked the first two films.
Watch the rocketeer if you like old timey adventure movies, like Indiana jones.
So was the autogyro miniature the same aircraft miniature as in ANNIE?
