People always say the French are arrogant and rude, but I found them to be quite polite when I visited from Australia. Especially the way they would usually make some attempt to mask their horror and quickly switch smoothly from their native tongue into English, in an effort to stop me from continuing to butcher their language with my 2-terms-of-high-school-back-in-1995 level of pronunciation, shockingly confused verb tenses and crazily mixed up masculine/feminine nouns.

In Australia, there is an appearance that some of the people possess that I can only describe as "British". Think "Fawlty Towers" or "Are You Being Served?". Not an attractive lot, at least in my opinion. You know who some of the really attractive Australians are? The daughters of immigrants from Poland and the Czech Republic. Young Melania Trumps walking around. Striking.

I moved from Scotland to Paris and ordered a poulet crudités baguette every lunchtime at the boulangerie. Eventually I decided to work out why they looked at me funny each time and asked. The woman said a baguette is the bread. I asked what the baguettes with filling were called, she said they are called sandwiches.

I'm an American and I was in Blackheath one afternoon in 2022 in the little bookstore at the corner and I was lambasted by a guy complaining about our 'government's policies. I kindly asked if we could not have this conversation, and he got even more animated about his displeasure with Americans. The older lady that ran the store asked him to leave and he resisted at first. I departed the shop, walked quickly across the green back to Greenwich, grabbed the Uber boat and went back to Embankment in the city. 😕

Yes, I'm surprised at the rudeness of so many Europeans. For some reason they think it's okay to be completely open with their unfavorable opinions about the U.S. and want to discuss them in detail. (It's especially offensive because they're such hypocrites in the process, accusing people from the U.S. of being ignorant when it's exactly what they're being.) I don't find people from other parts of the world doing that.
