The Ward Lafrance didn't meet LACoFD standards as I believe the Ward Lafrances with the department had 2 pre-connect reels instead of the single one seen on Engine 51 as it was made for a department in Florida.
The modern belt buckles you are referring to are for the LAFD NOT the LACoFD, which are 2 different departments. Emergency! Is supposed to be from LA County.

The original Engine 51 was a Crown Firecoach. The later engine was a Ward LaFrance.
