Nice project . Theirs is several ways to do phasing. with 2 you can have a switch to flip direction . With 1 driven element you can use parasitic reflector . That works as well. But you have to move the reflector to change direction . I got like 4-200 meter phased antennas into a 50 KW AM transmitter. Similar what you and Callum trying to do . Just different band and power level. you can get some antenna gain with rejection in outher direction. Will be a fun project ! I just don't know power level of RG6 . You can use TDR with a Nano VNA H4 to test the villosity factor. I have seen this done with 3 antennas as well. 73
Chuck, this will be a fun project. Callum's 9 poles are great, you can look into the Spiderbeam 12m HD poles. I use those from my 40meter set-ups. You want two 84 degree (adjusted for VF) feedlines and one 71 degree (adjusted for VF) delay line. The spacing between the elements is 1/4wl.
I think you have space for a horizontal loop. I setup this antenna at the cottage a couple months ago and I was really surprised by the performance I got new country in my log. Good luck 73's.
You know I have thought about that and also thought about going across the creek to make it larger but sure someone would complain lol, thanks for watching!
Another good and maybe cheaper setup might be using your existing tower by shunt feeding it to be the driven element and using a parasitic reflector. By changing the tuning on the parasitic you can make it a director or reflector. That avoids the phasing network and you can use your existing tower. I have shunt fed towers a lot and it’s pretty easy. For the parasitic you simply make it a bit short so it’s resonant low (as a director) and use an inductor to move the resonant point above the operating frequency to make it a reflector. VE6WZ has a good video tutorial on how to tune it. For 40 meters your spacing would only be about 17 feet.
Looking forward to the next videos. I’m like you, even with a 2el yagi , our towers are too short for any beam performance. I’ve used a sloping delta fed vertically and it does ok but the noise on 40 is pretty bad. I definitely can be heard but can’t hear sht. 😂 I wonder how a short bev rx antenna would work there.
I haven't bought one yet but check out the spiderbeam 10m mast. It should be pretty sturdy but still light enough you could probably get away with driving a pipe in the ground and setting it over that as its support. You can also get them for $80-90 depending on which version you get.
Chuck. The box for a phasing harness is pretty easy to make if you are not switching. The only reason for relays is to change where the phase is added. Otherwise, it is just a simple T to split 2 even runs of Coax and then add in the extra amount of Coax to put the verticals out of phase. Even John on a live stream said I could just go out and take the phase out of one side of the T and add it to the other to change directions. But yes, a fun project that I plan on doing also. Probably the same thing although I do have the room for a 40m 4 square but that would be next year. And, I would definitely do the DX Commander poles.
Chuck, Christman is coming early for you, lol😢 I’ve sketched up a phased pair of portable verticals…likely with 40 and 20M phasing harnesses. On the To-Do list for the Spring. Looking forward to seeing your completed project.
@ A field strength meter set for 100% in the direction of the beaming pattern compares with a reverse phase could give you some metrics for comparison.
Hi Chuck, Have you thought of using three verticals instead of four. I think John has already worked out a switching arrangement for three verticals. It will be a nice project either way. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Gain on the lower bands requires commitment. Good for you going after it Chuck. You are talking to good people for this. Have you looked at the rotatable 44 foot (OAL) solid element doublet up at 66 feet? Yes, 66 foot is a challenge, but it does 10 - 40, and 40 has 7 dBi. With gain in both directions you only need to rotate it 90 degrees. Take off angle is only 29 degrees for 40, but is less than 10 for 10 & 12 meter. Only 15 for 20m. I have not seen it modeled for lower heights. At 10m gain is 10+ dBi
Best of luck Chuck. Looking forward to following along. Phased verticals are extremely pernickety, certainty an antenna that you need up for a long time to optimise I've found. I dont quite have the space for 40m phased verticals here.
I can't read the writing in the splash introduction frame, because the writing is too small to see. How do you keep those radials from the two separate vertical elements from physically interfering with each other on the ground? I see an arrow pointing at where they intersect, but frustratingly I can't read what it says there. Consequently, when it comes to a phased array, I'm much more attracted to the half square which doesn't need to have to lay out that kind of a radio field. Perhaps you might model your face array as you show it there in compare it to an equivalent 1/2 square antenna: essentially two quarter wave verticals with a half wave of wire horizontally attaching both elements, and fed ta the corner. Well not so much on 40 because of sheer size, the half square also becomes more practical on 20, 15, and certainly 10 metres. And can also be put up quickly and removed quickly for portable POTA, and field day operations in general. All the best! 73 DE W8LV BILL
Hi Bill, I will try and show a bigger picture next time. You bond the ones that intersect though with a single wire. I had a Half square well still do it's not up right because of the tree limb that fell. I might try and compare them at a later date, it did work well for longer distance than my doublet 3-4 s units into south America, Thanks for watching!
Woot! How fun is this! Nice set of meats in the background too Chuck!
Oh yea those are the hard core Rubicon tires!
Looking forward to this one too!

This is gonna be awesome 👍

I have the 12m spyderbeam it's a beast and another option only need 1.
Definitely looking forward to this!

Thanks Frank, I have messed with something like this without the harness and wasn't sure it worked.

Thanks so much for this video, been curious about phasing for awhile now
Me too and it's time to try it! Thanks for watching!

Ye Colin I have the space and everything else I care about on the tower. I hope this goes well!

Why not elevate the verticals and use two radials.
Also use the 40m coils on the verticals, you won't be short off 1/4 wave.
