Grand Theft Auto 3's Strange Little Spots

  • Honestly, I've never been a big Grand Theft Auto fan. Something about the heavily scripted missions and constantly failing them put me off of the series. And while that's still obviously a problem to me, I learned to appreciate the world of these games recently. I was surprised at how many elements of future GTA games were solidified in its first 3d entry. I'm super excited to check out Vice City and San Andreas, just to see what the expanded worlds will look like. Though I like the compactness of Liberty City. It really does feel like a series' first step into 3d. It's comfy in a way GTA 5's Los Santos isn't. I'd consider myself a little bit of a Grand Theft Auto fan now. Thanks GTA 3.

I always thought I was weird because for as long as I can remember I had a fascination with abandoned/strange/lonely places in video game maps from the 2000s. Now the maps are very polished, very designed, but there was a time where video games had those " design flaws" that resulted in strange places forgotten by the player and always generated a certain magnetism in me

it's honestly my biggest issue with GTA 5 (and modern games in general). Everything is so pre-planned and scripted and polished that it somehow feels more fake and artificial than these older maps. GTA 3 Liberty City feels like a centuries old city that has all these odd areas that maybe meant something 100 years ago, but were built on and around and are no longer relevant. Just like real world cities.

I live in Osaka, and can think of analogues to all of these areas in the game. A random mansion-like house in a "crumbling" area (I saw it built, too, and remember the grotty place that was there before), long riverside pathways, huge empty areas beside rivers that have "no purpose" and you'd think they'd be built on (only in Japan their purpose is to "eat up" the force of tsunamis before they reach actual buildings), abandoned old blocks surrounded by rusted fences, and odd places under bridges and along train tracks where you're simultaneously surrounded by 10,000,000 and completely alone.
Man I've got to get new tyres on my bike and go riding.

@@BagzAndPresident I disagree. It's way more easier to spot the imperfections if you play the games in HD. The 480i resolution masked just how low res the textures were, how janky the facial animations were and overall masked how cartoony and "gamey" the 3D games looked.

    • @F0CKSTR0T
      @F0CKSTR0T 4 месяца назад +23

@@BagzAndPresident Yeah hard disagree. The atmosphere and visuals of the original PS2 releases of all 3 games is the way they're meant to be experienced. I've played every version, own physical copies for PS2 and PC. Normally I'd agree that most multiplatform games of that era are simply Xbox games but games like NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and the GTA series were built on PS2 as the lead dev console. They had no concept of HD in 2001. Xbox's 480p does look good but they changed everything about the soul of the games. The lighting and brightness and atmosphere overall is just off. And in the case of Vice City and San Andreas, any version that isn't the original black label PS2 release is missing entire songs from the soundtrack. Yes you can mod them back in on PC. But you can't really mod playing the real deal on a CRT.

The area north of Salvatore's mansion is a leftover from earlier stages of development. If you look at early versions of the map, there was a small peninsula there jutting out to the northeast. There was a power plant there, though no proper screenshots of it exist as far as I know (other than a top-down wireframe render). It seems that once that entire area was cut, Rockstar just "fixed" it by placing a bunch of big concrete blocks there instead.

    • @worldcomicsreview354

Luigi's stairs - There's a lot of unique spots for verticality for the curious actually. Check out the El-train to various drop offs, or even better the Amco building...
Beach - Main missions "Gone Fishing" and side mission "Patriot Playground" are at leas the 2 that come to mind that take you here.
Train Tunnel - very useful shortcut for "Bomb da Base: act ii" for which many of us had to play over and over and over due to 8-Ball being a wuss (also the homeless aren't drinking liquor, they've got moltovs!)
Car Tunnels - You'll grow to curse them when you plan side mission "Rigged to Blow" and you have to drive a car perfectly without an ounce of damage from Portland to Shoreside or you have to get it resprayed. Not to mention the GPS glitch stuck on the Pay N Spray (on the definitive edition) that doesn't go away after this mission...
Catalina's Mansion - Yes use a Colombian Cruiser to get in but also you don't need another car to jump on the ambulance--typical trick to get around many other places
Airports - plenty I'm sure -Just Cause 2 for one.
The vast empty bounds I think make a lot of sense, a good way to make the game feel vast and unbounded to most regular non-explorers.
My spot picks off the top of my head:
Amco rooftops, Sawmill rooftops, St. Marks various back alleys with ramps and such, odd stairway to the sea north of Phil's compound, church cemetery, casino roof, & Staunton SW parking lot & underground lot. Plenty more I'm sure, like the Shoreside cliffside tunnels you can't access.

Also the water around Liberty City is so weird because shortly before the game there was a massive oil spill. Rockstar had an online version of the Liberty City news up a while back and one of the stories was about an oil tanker spilling a crapload of oil in the waters around the city. The unnamed mayor just said "don't try swimming in it or you'll die".

There is a side mission taking place on the beach and mountains around Salvatore's house, it's a vehicle mission called Patriot Playground and it counts towards 100% completion. You need to get into the Patriot vehicle in front of the Super Save store that's south of Salvatore's house. It's actually a lot of fun, you need to collect 15 quest markers around the mountains and beaches in a time limit and you need to control the truck very carefully but at the same time it's actually very relaxing. I definitely remember some markers being at the very edge of the cliffs behind Salvatore's house! I think a lot of people consider it one of the hardest side missions but I liked it.

I like the idea thst Claude just has a pilots license. In gta San Andreas, cj will get a wanted level whenever he breaks into an airport. That is, until he gets a license. Then he's free to enter and take a plane whenever he wants.

You don't get a wanted level in SA; Rockstar didn't start that until IV. You just can't open the gate or access any aircraft (except in Los Santos) until the license is obtained.

I remember following one of the fishing companies' trucks to their HQ or whatever. The gate wouldn't open to me. I then experimented by stealing one of the trucks and going to the same spot, where it suddenly opened. That was a cool little finding, considering I was like 9.

    Chill cozy concept and video.
I used to walk around games after beating them like this alot. Even multiplayer maps.
An example of a few games I liked to look around alot in for small details or anything interesting would be Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Halo 2. Halo always had interesting out of bounds areas and easter eggs. Ways to skip over areas or see things spawned in before they actually spawned in the proper area. Oblivion had small random places like a camp site with a journal, a waterfall bridge crossing leading to a hidden cave or a dead troll under a bridge with a note about how nobody was scared of him.

The huge expanse of grassland next to the beach and passing Salvatore's mansion was a leftover from content that didn't make it to the game. In a very early planning map you can see what looks like another industrial area, some interpreting it as the prison you were beeing taken to in the begining of the game.

This a great concept and video; exploration of hidden/liminal/remote places in old games, especially such a class as GTA3. It's why I love open world games, especially Shadow of Chernobyl, and Call of Pripyat. Other commenters have mentioned that feeling of isolation you get in these places, and the joy of discovering hidden items, so you know the developers are fully aware of their existence. I'd love a little backstory and architectural critique too, GTA3 could be a full series, very different to anything else I've seen. 👏

There are at least two missions that bring you to the beach, one is a boat chase with a man illegally fishing with grenades (who I think is given to you by either Asuka or Ray), and another checkpoints based side mission with the Patriot parked in front of the supermarket close to the beach. The mission only starts if you enter the Patriot.

You know of all the videos about old games like this, this one was by far the biggest nostalgia trip for me. I wanted to spend so much time here I pretty much did all the things you did in the video. Hours and hours just exploring and finding all these places, the emptiness made it feel more real to me. Like these places would still exist without you, the sun would rise and set on them on bothered. But you found them, you can have that still silent emptiness to yourself and not have to share it with anyone else.

I’m 35 and GTA3 was the most-played game in my life with my highschool best friend (aside from Halo CE). I was about 13-14 back then.
It’s really strange to me though that seeing so many “nostalgia” and “strange feeling” videos like this, GTA3 never felt like that to me. It feels normal, comforting even, even in empty areas.
PC games like counter-strike and half life, older early-3D games like Doom and Quake, N64 games like Zelda, all have that uncanny “empty world” feel to me, but not GTA3. I really don’t know why though?

I like these little videos. They explore the feeling that even now draws me towards games that let you build bases. I think Metal Gear Solid 3 also had some really interesting environments that would be cool to look at. The lush jungles, cramped forest glades, mountains, and secret military base. The massive 3-cell jungle/mountain cliff edge area used for the fight with The End is gorgeous!

GTA3 was the first true 3D openworld game. Rockstar pioneered tecch with their engine that allowed the world to stream in around the player rather than load in completely all at once. Still, back then you really had to pick and choose where you were going to add details, and what type of details to which you would devote the little memory and processing power you had. Hidden Packages were bonuses for avid explorers of the game-world, therefore they were hidden in places that weren't used for combat or cutscenes, and instead were created to be interesting to explore. It's no wonder these are some of the most interesting places in the early 3D Liberty City
